The collages (production stills from movies) on my blog site are mostly created on paint, stored on jpeg and transferred to Mindsay.  I have an extensive DVD collection of my favorite movies I use for my reviews, or I download images from the 'net, and use them to paste.  I also have software that allows me to video-capture scenes from DVDs.   The captions/titles on my collages are downloaded from Microsoft word, and pasted.  I retouch photos of my niece (similar to your retouches of LOTR stills) and file them on my computer - she's a sweetheart!
