Where abouts in South Africa do you live?
I was born in SA. Lived there for three years then emigrated to Canada. Apart from my parents and two of my aunties my entire family lives there still. Generally Joberg based but my Grandmother lives in Pretoria and I have friends and family scattered about the coast.
Wow that's awesome! It's nice to see someone around here with some south african roots!! Well.. just like your granny i'm based in Pretoria but it's a fun place to live!
Oh, Pretoria most certainly is a fun place. I believe I was there for a huge new years party when I was 19. One of the fonder memories of my life. And of course, I often visit my Ouma there when I'm in the country. We always go out to the restoraunt built next to the bird conservation looking over the pond. I can't remember the name but it has quite a view. Food's not half bad either. I wonder if you know the place I'm speaking of?
Lol!!! I believe you are talking about "Blue Crane" restaurant which looks out onto the Austen Roberts Bird Park. I stay like 5blocks away from there! And the new years party you are talking about could probably be the Tuks Fm new years bash.. i go there every year.. and its one huge party!!It's nice to see that you still refer to your gran as "ouma" and that you don't forget the nature of your roots as they are very important throughout life.
Ahh the Blue Crane indeed! Memories! I think we are talking about diferent new year parties though. the one I went to was at a huge conference center just outside of Pretoria. I don't remember the name but it was in somewhat of the rave format: 3 dance floors, chill out rooms, VIP section (which I had tickets to but they saddly oversold so it was too packed), and an all night movie room which was nice at 4am to wind down in a bit. This all ocurred some 4 years ago and I think a solid few thousand people turneed up. Massive! Mind you, who knows, it could be the very same.
Roots, roots, roots... It all comes down to family lest there be nothing to fall back on.

You just spoke such true words.. anyways. There are quite a number of huge (and massive, fun) new years parties which people attend. the one i was at this year there were estimating about 25000 people according to ticket sales. It was awsum!
DANG! I can't wait to go back again! My parents leave for South Africa this coming wednesday. I am so very envious!
Ah indeed.. the ambitions of a varsity student.. same old same old.. what are your ambitions if I may ask??
Oooh Damn! There are so many. At the moment the one cut clear would be to get high enought marks to be accepted to LSE in England and perhaps even Cambridge (though that is pretty haughty) and get an MSc or eve PhD in media and communications. That is to say, after I am finnished with honours here and perhaps a diploma in creative advertizing which I can't quite make up my mind about. The key, really, is just to get the hell out of this country a while. The place drives up the wall.
High and mighty ambitions you have there.. cambridge indeed.. i also had my sights on that one for a while.. Believe it or not. I would quite like to get out of here as well some or other time.
I think I might just take you on on that one.. maybe take a working year into london.. meet a few strange people..it could just work..
So, living in SA and all, have you heard of the Africaans band Battery 9? I'm not going to attempt to spell that in Africaans, though I can say it. Their most popular single waaaaaay back in the day when I was, goodness, fourteen or so was "Kiss the Machine." Fakking brilliant!
Mind you, you would have been about nine back then if your age in your profile is correct. You wouldn't have happened to be into badass Africaans hard rock when you were nine?

I know exctly what you are talking about!!! I have the album (which I am going to listen as we speak coz you made me hungry for it!). They've got about 13 kick ass songs. Kiss the machine still plays on the local radio station and even it has an industrial feel to it- it's one of the best songs to come out of SA! Another song of them that kicks ass is "aag fok!"... And yes your spelling is right- it is BATTERY9.
I was only 9 when it came out, but I saw them live last year at Zeplins, after hearing them on the radio for so long. It was an awesome show! They played with this heavy-metal chick band called ROKKELOOS. One of the best shows I've seen in a long time.
Oh you kick! I wish so very much that I still had that cd. A south African friend I used to go to school had it and took it with him when he moved to BC before the days of easy cd copying. I wonder if I'll be able to track any of the songs down on Lime Wire or something... Or perhaps I'll ask one of my rellies to send it through the sanil mail.
I've got the album..... if you want to I can copy it for you and post it to you via snail mail. I know it sounds weird and I barely know you- but in honour of good music I would certainly do it if you become desperate.Always willing to help a fellow supporter of SA music.
My goodness! That sounds far too cool and a lot of work. I'd have to send you something to were that the case.
It's seriously no problem.. I'm used to sending stuff to my friends who are abroad.Well-like I said, let me know if you want me to send it to you. It's like R1 for a blank cd, no cost for copying and like a few bucks for postage. It's not that bad.
It would just make me feel better if I could send you something too so that you got something in return for your troubles.
