So I read this fabulous review of Precious a few days ago written by an African-American woman about how the film is exactly what black America needs right now, and so many people kept leaving replies basically dogging the film for one reason or another: because Winfrey/Perry are behind it, because it is about yet another victim, etc etc -- then this white guy left this reply, and I was so happy: Click!
You really should read the review too though. I posted it to my Tumblr account, and I may do the same here on MindSay because I have not seen a great review of a film in quite a while. Best part of the review:
I like how, toward the end, she praises Tyler Perry for doing something other than the "simple" Madea franchise, which she calls "more propaganda than art" anyway. I never could get into those films, but stuff like The Color Purple & Precious are films that I just love love love. Maybe I am subconsciously even more an Oprah fan than I realise, but I do not deny being a fan of hers either =)

Perhaps the best thing about "Precious" is how it dismantles the well-honed defense mechanisms of the black audience. As viewers, we tend to be ready commentators, snickering at our own pain; we make fun of these on-screen moments because they're frequently so unconvincing. Movies, among other things, have taught us not to take ourselves seriously. But in drawing black pain so specifically and unsentimentally, "Precious" makes those cavalier attitudes impossible. When Mo'Nique snaps, "Shut the fuck up!" for the hundredth time or Gabourey Sidibe, the remarkable actress in the title role, tearfully confesses to her own sense of nothingness, the largely black audience I sat with was silent; I could feel a rare chill of recognition. In one of the film's most heartbreaking moments, Precious stands on the cold sidewalk with her new baby, looking longingly through the window of a church at a gospel rehearsal in joyous full swing. It's rare to see a black church portrayed as impotent. But it isn't a condemnation so much as an illustration of her isolation — our isolation.

By the way, the author of that reply that I posted to you mentions Milk only because someone else in the thread made an insulting remark about homosexual cinema too. Some people make me so angry
I hope you don't mind me putting in a plug for a good cause:
