Just curious ... I happened to stumble here and saw that you were homeschooled and went to high school - how long did it take you to adjust?  I homeschool my daughter and am planning to go all the way up, and I was curious what your experience was.  Did you want to go to high school?  Did you like being homeschooled?  How long did you homeschool for?

Re: Homeschoolnomor... Wiki Page
Hi Ruth.  I am currently in 9th grade going to a public high school, and this is my first year in a public school.  I homeschooled from 1st grade to 8th grade, and for the most part I liked it.  I knew I would like public school because of the social aspect of it, as I'm a very social person.  At about 7th or 8th grade, while homeschooling, I began thinking about college, SATs, etc. and realized that I was going to have to get a move on academic-wise.  I decided to go to high school for mostly full time - I go for 9 of 11 periods.  So I guess you could say I wanted to go to school, mainly for academics but I knew I would like other things about it too.  I am now 90% sure that I am going to go back to homeschooling next year, mainly because I don't think school is worth all the stress and pressure of homework, deadlines, forced work, etc.  Homeschooling gives you much more choice of what to learn, and it gives me more free time.  I am also a serious violin player, and school takes up so much of my time that some days I don't even practice at all.

I suppose you could say I liked homeschooling a lot, because it gave me so many more opportunities to do things (like take violin tours to places like Mexico and Florida in the middle of the school year).  I do like school most of the time, but to me all the pressure is too much, and I think now that I've been to school I would do a lot better homeschooling.  I now have more self-discipline and self-motivation than I did before (I hope) so I think I would be much more productive.

I hope this answers your questions....I think it really depends on the person if homeschooling is right for them, because I know many people who would not do well at all homeschooling.  They need a teacher to tell them to do things, much as they might not like it, because they can't do it themselves at home.  This is what started happening to me last year, and it's the main reason I started going to school.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to me.

I know for myself, I hated school from day one and I never wanted that to happenn to our daughter.  I'm a teacher so it just made sense to me to homeschool.  I remember in high school, all that time wasted goinf from class to class, and I remember the teachers talking to us like we were idiots - again, I dind't want our daughter going through that, which is why we made the decision to homeschool.

Again, thanks - and good luck!!

It's no problem, I like sharing things like this with people.  It's amazing the stereotypes people have against homeschoolers - my favorite one is "how do you have friends if you sit at home all day at your desk?"
There are also others that aren't really that dumb, like "who teaches you, your mom or your dad?"  Actually, neither...I basically taught myself, out of books, online, etc., and took a few classes.

I think the ridiculous questions are the most annoying part.  "Is it legal", "what about socilization?", "does she have any friends?" "How do you know what to do?"  arg.  I'm teaching Megan how to respond to people like this, so I can just refer them to her.  haha

Right now, of course I'm doing the whole job, but the thing I LOVE about the whole hom, eschooling process is it teaches you to teacxh yourself, and once she's older she can do it.  Great practice for when she's all grown up too.

Re: Homeschoolnomor... Wiki Page
If I could give you some advice - this is all from experience and the way I was raised - never exert too much pressure on her.  Of course it is a necessity to be able to work for a deadline later in life, but I never did so much homeschooling and I'm doing fine in school.  I think the most important thing is to let the kids have fun with it, learn about what they're interested in, etc.  I know I'm still in school, but I think this is true....I know several people who hate homeschooling because their parents pressure them so much with their work, and that's not what homeschooling is about.

p.s. I added you as a friend so you can view my blog if you want.

Awesome - thanks much.

No, that's great advise, and I'll try to remember it.  When we started in September, I had a folder and I'd put her work for the day in it -- but I soon realized that she dind't always feel like doing math, or wasn't in the mood for phonics, so I started labaling the folders by subject, and she can pick which subject she wants to do.  We do quizzes and Fridays, and we school between 9am - 12pm, other than that I'm as flexible as I can be.

Yes, that's the great thing about homeschooling, flexibility.  I like your planning.  Let me know how everything goes!
