and believe me, it's better to be that way! I was so much more vulnerable and deluded when I was young, and maturing doesn't prevent people getting back their fun side!, even though we have to go through heavy stuff to get there. I think there's some pretty serious problems in society though and that's why they cannot really rest yet

thing is at this age you have so little privileges!
that's why i'm not sure if it's good. because going through so many things to make me mature mentally earlier in such a short space of time, i don't think would be too good for me in later life. or perhaps it will. only time can tell :]

In 23+beyond you mean? - well... you're right in a way, we have to work and fight and pay for everything, make own meals, etc but it's more... real (if that makes sense) - because when my parents used to do all that stuff I was sorta in my own world and I didn't get to appreciate what I did have so much, but now life is more of a contributing thing and something to be proud of

i meant at my age. as a teenager. you can't do anything ad your parents/guardians get the final say on everything. like i've wanted a lip piercing for ages! but i need parental permission and my mom is very much against me getting one..
i wouldn't mind having to work and pay for everything, etc. I just want to be able to be in charge of what i do and everything. so that's why as soon as i'm 16 or 18 or however old you have to be, then i'm getting my lip pierced!

because i was 5 when my dad died and so many things have happened since that made me.. "mature" i suppose. but i never really did have an actual childhood. so then as an adult that might affect me in some.. weird way or something.

When I was at school we used to have fridays where we could bring stuff in to talk about, and my dad gave me these really powerful magnets (he's an engineer) and they were smashing into each other! (literally, the magnetism was strong enough that they'd fly into each other and smash each other to bits!)

I can tell you what causes magnetism! *grins*. So you could impress your science teacher... (and friggen everyone!)

kay! Well y'know atoms have a nucleus... it's basically that spinning. Each one that spins basically (somehow) generates a little magnetic field of it's own, so when 2 or more nuclei are spinning near each other, they will generally want to spin in the same direction because they will affect each other's energy, they can even change the direction of spin of other iron atoms so that they align, so that more energy is released - that's how you can magnetise a bit of metal (i.e. a nail).

nice. i think i might have actually understood that!! dude! you're like.. the best science teacher ever. my chemistry/physics teacher now makes the simplest things sound so hard coz he likes to make out he's smarter than us all...

hahaha I can see that idea going through your mind now! Wanna see a reaaallly big/powerful magnet? Basically you know what I said about atoms being like little magnets themselves? - well that's also the case for atoms that aren't metal, but ususally their magnetism is so incredibly weak that they're thought of as non-magnetic. So people have to use a very strong magnet to be able to see them react to it. (this is an advanced technique but I've already told you enough to make sense of it, and I believe you can handle it. Don't be intimidated by it, I realise it's a lot)

The reason they do this is so you can learn more about the molecule (supposing you made something and you didn't know what it was) - because a molecule is like a bunch of atoms connected to each other, and those atoms will give a different reading of magnetism depending on where they are in the molecule and what they're connected to. This is actually a technique to tell what groups of atoms you have, but it won't tell you how it fits together.

Yay! Thankyou *takes a bow*, well... when I have time to think through what I'm gonna say, I couldn't stand in front of a class. Elitism is a big problem in the sciences, these people need to be brought down to earth because they are an obstacle to people learning/understanding - as you've experienced with yours. Science can be a scary subject, especially with the silly scary names for some things, but it really doesn't have to be - anyone can do it, it just takes patience, willingness to learn and good teaching. Science should be fascinating, it should get people thinking in all new ways, not scare people off because that's not in the spirit of it.
If he's already taught you about where protons, neutrons and electrons go in an atom he's already taught you enough to make a complete fool of him if you like! Simply ask him what holds a nucleus together in the first place... because if you think about it, in the nucleus you've got loads of protons crammed into a really small space, and because they all have positive charge they should be repelling each other like hell. I'm not afraid to admit I don't know, but I know that (for some reason) there is a very strong force of some kind, because nuclear reactions (where a nuclei either split or join together) - they involve tremendous amounts of energy (hence the atomic bomb is so powerful)

A bit older than your age they'd started teaching us chemistry here, I'm thinking maybe you had a look at the periodic table, the parts of an atom, and mayyybe bonding too? I'm confident (that with me looking up old notes) I could eventually get you up to research level but one idea at a time! - it's accepting new concepts when they come in that's the hard part. My career ended as a student because my supervisor refused to accept that what he wanted me to make just didn't last long enough to do anything with.

ehh.. we did the periodic table in the year before, and atoms and bonding last year. so this year's gonna be hell! coz i missed the last 6 or 7 lessons.. :/

Covalent bonding is where 2 atoms share their electrons - atoms like to have a full set of electrons in their outer shell and when they don't they can share. Electrons are attracted to the nucleus, so sharing means the same electrons are attracted to 2 nuclei instead of one, and that's why they do it - it's like you could get an iron bar and put a magnet on either end and both would be attracted. A covatent bond has 2 electrons - one from each atom.

An ionic bond is where one atom basically steals an electron from another, rather than sharing, as another way to fill up it's outer shell of electrons. It happens when you have one atom very much more electron-grabbing (called electronegative) than the other - so it's usally between a non-metal (i.e. cholrine, that very much wants an electron) and a metal (that doesn't particularly care if it loses it's electron). The one that gains the electron will be negative ion (as electrons are negatively charged) and the one that loses that electron would become positive, as it's minus the electron.

An easy way to remember - The number of protons it has (aka the atomic number) tells you what element it is - that's the smaller number usually in the top left. The larger number is called Relative mass - this is the number of protons + number of neutrons, which is essentially the weight of the atom

Each electron has a charge of -1, (is negative). Suppose you had a debt of -£1, if you could somehow 'give' that -£1 debt to someone else, you'd then have £0, so you'd essentially have gained £1 from them. If you had £0 to start with overall, by both having money and owing money, but could get rid of some of your debt, then you'd have a positive amount

The overall charge of an atom/ion = number of protons - number of electrons
So if the number of electrons goes down but the number of protons doesn't, then you'll have a positive number

So all I'm saying really is that because protons and neutrons are the only things with mass, you get the mass of the atom by adding together the number each.
And the number of protons defines which element it is
And that because protons and electrons are the only things that have charge, you can find the overall charge by comparing the number of protons to electrons.

Mass and charge are totally unrelated, but I like your thinking! I don't know what causes charge or mass (because to be honest I don't really know what makes protons/neutrons/electrons the way they are) - so for me it was just something I had to remember.
Think of mass as being like the size of a ball and charge being like colour...

To illustrate that it's unconnected to mass - colour is like additional information the world can have where anything could potentially take any shade, and it's measured in a different way - like you see colour with your eyes and mass with weighing scales.

Another example would be like saying you have a certain position, you're at a certain point in time, you have a certain temperature - and all those things could take any value regardless of each other, but they're all information about you (they're like your coordinates, almost)

The only way they found out was some sort of experimentation - there comes a point with everything in science where it boils down to just what people have seen (that's how it always started, because before then people had no theory to work with). Like in this case somehow getting one of those protons/neutrons/electrons and injecting it in some machine that measures charge. Or they could've just compared different atoms with different numbers of protons/neutrons/electrons and worked it out any differences that way.

They use +1 and -1 (without any units) because those are the smallest amounts of charge ever seen, so they're just given the values of +1 and -1, like a ratio to show they're relative to each other - it's not to say they're exactly +1 coulombs or anything, just to show that whatever their charge is, it's equal in magnitude (size) for both of them, so it's not like +1 vs -1.2 or anything, but it is opposite.
Every proton will always have a fixed charge of +1 relative to all electrons and all other protons, and a mass of 1 relative to all other protons and neutrons... dunno know why (wish I did!) - but it's always the same, and just something you have to remember for the purposes of building up atoms -ask a physiscist! lol

(mhmmm) lol - different types that somehow combine to make protons + neutrons (I dunno how lol) - but with this you can learn, and you'll be a better physicist than me! and an electron comes from an "antiquark" (which is an antimatter form of the quark)

I have no idea what makes quarks the way they are! - this is a problem in science... the most fundamental things just are... with no reason to be. Even the laws of phsyics themselves - why should gravity exist? Yea, I think there must be, because otherwise it wouldn't be like it is. I think of it like a table on top of a table on top of a table - like each supports + holds the other one up, just wonder what holds up the one at the bottom - but even if I tried using god to explain it I'd have the same problem - why would he exist? - why would he be like he'd be?

It's like I couldn't explain the most fundamental things like why positive and negative charges attract, why as strongly as they do, why the laws of physics exist and why there aren't more (or less)

- To that I have a theory - Because it can! lol - behold, Entropy - the natural movement of all things towards randomness - your bedroom gets untidy, that's entropy! haha - a natural force in the universe. Basically... y'know if you held a load of coins in your hand + threw them on the table - you'd expect them to scatter randomly, you'd be very surprised if they happened to stack neatly on top of each other, just as you'd be very surpised if you threw something randomly in your room and it went exactly where it's supposed to

Entropy is basically probability - it's more likely that things will become messy + random because there's so many more ways that can happen - there's so many ways to arrange stuff that's messy + chaotic, so it's more likely. Maybe this whole universe formed, with all it's set laws of physics, just because it could - the whole big bang happeneing just because it's more chaotic than nothingness, maybe there are other universes too (some imaginary) with other laws of physics, every possibly combination existing just because they can.

Quite possibly! Although then I wonder - if the big bang happened just because it could, why don't more happen? And also why things stay like they are - unless we just are living in the possibility where all the rules are constant and this universe only seems significant because of conciousness

A whole 'nother side to molecules!, doesn't really affect anything, but can tell what you have by shining light through a sample and seeing what frequencies of light were absorbed to make those vibrations... Also vibration is how molecules store heat - so the more you heat something up, the more + faster they vibrate!

Yea... and I was thinking anyway... the big bang should've made a black hole - 'cuz if you think about it, you would've had lotsa mass in a very small space when it started, so the gravity would've been so strong that the whole thing shouldn't've expanded...

: / According to the church of the flying spaghetti monster, the preffered language was pirate - and according to cpt Mosey (equivilent of moses) pirates were actually nice people who gave sweets to children and who helped reduce global warming by using wind-powered transport... they actually made a graph too (on the site) - showing that since the numbers of pirates worldwide has gone down, global warming has gone up...

Molecules have to do something with the energy you give them, moving around faster is one of those things too, and that's also why when you heat up a gas you increase the pressure - the molecules move faster and colide with the outer walls of the baloon/surface more- and also it's why air expands when it's heated - the particles colide with each other more when hot so they keep their distance, and because of that hot air has a lower density, so it floats - which is what holds up hot air baloons!!
And in a liquid the molecules are moving around, but slowly because they're still loosely held together - heat not only makes the molecules move faster but can also be used to break those connections, allowing it to move more - and if the molecules move fast enough they essentially become more like a gas

haha mhmm! Butbutbut - even if it formed a black hole, that wouldn't be the end of it! - because black holes do degrade - if you think about it if stuff falls into a black hole there would be less junk in the universe, therefore less chaos - which'd mean less entropy! - but entropy doesn't like going down by itself - and black holes themselves have an awful lot of matter in them. So, immediately outside of the black hole, the nothingness splits like this - projecting antimatter into the black hole (partially eliminating it) and matter away from it, putting junk back into the universe, restoring entropy!
Andandand - what if life was just a dream... and we were already in a realm of afterlife, and science was just there to keep us busy? - like the universe itself + all it's rules could be the dream of a god/something

yea, my old headmaster did as a retirement present, and landed in the field of my next school!

There are theories like that - because relative time (each thing's personal clock) supposedly slows down as you approach a black hole until it stops in the middle (where you have an infinite density of matter - mass slows down time). If you drew it on a graph it looks like a cone, so their theory is "why not have a cone coming out the other side?" - i.e. if you could pass through the middle black hole and be projected into a mirror image anti-universe where time runs backwards or something - at least I think it'd have to be a mirror image, because you couldn't justify it being connected any other way I think.
Thng is, to me, no reason for there to be a cone on the other side, as I see it - especially as you wouldn't be able to pass through the middle (because time stops there)

Well... we may still experience what we think an afterlife is, only it'd just be a different realm/reality, that's all... this one is special though - because the only way in is birth, so it's not as if they have control over intake. Not seen vanilla sky but sounds intriging + deep! I once saw a film about a ghost who didn't realise he died + kept trying to help + be around his wife, and couldn't understand why she didn't respond... was sad : /. Ever seen Donnie Darko?

Could be, and yea : / - who knows mebbe all will be revealed after life - but there could be unknown things beyond them even. And you have a crucial point - there are things science will never be able to find out or test - we can't change the laws of physics so we can't see if they relate, we could'nt design a machine to work with dimensions we can't interpret because if we can't sense them in the first place we'd never know what the machine was doing, or even how to link things

mhmm, I'm in no rush either! It used to bug the hell outta me, but eventually I just had to accept I wouldn't know, and it wouldn't really help knowing anyway - we've gotta focus on life + stuff in this world

Yea, that's how it is...what they want doesn't have any effect on what really is though, but how it really is might incorporate religion - just that to be true it has to work around/ otherwise explain what's known

It's true, I think how important it is depends on what it is - present will turn into past, but future will turn into present. I hope if I keep my eyes ahead I can see things coming + prepare - or get a sense of what I have to do - clear roads ahead!
Yay! Well it's 2002 or something, so ebay or amazon or p2p networks might have to be the answer. One of my favourites - you have to watch it more than once to get the full thing because you see things 2nd + 3rd times round after thinking about it

That's a possibility, but on most occasions, the choice doesn't affect anything beyond itself - but it's true that sometimes anything could, almost down to complete luck

wow which sites plz? Youtube is/was racist against the uk too! - we weren't allowed official music videos because google (the owner of youtube) failed to agree a negociation with the licence companies.
Tell you what - you can download videos off t'internet! - any site with video embedded like youtube. What you need is mozzarella firefox - and a plugin called downloadhelper - then you can save videos as mp4 files! - meaning you should be able to download DD!

yea, but you know the saying "she loves the sound of her own voice"? wuite the opposite (though it's not normal for me to be quiet when around people i'm comfortable with.

Most people don't like the sound of their own voice, but to me what they don't like is usually fine! I think it's just embaressment + that you're listening out closely. I'm too embaressed to use the tannoy system at work, but I've never heard a voice on anyone else that I'd say should be embaressed about

yea. it might be that everyone's voice sounds different to different people. but how could we ever know?
i'd be too, coz whenever i've heard my voice on a microphone or during a video clip, then i get really embarrassed and if on microphone i just stop talking unless it's during a performance.

No way of comparing so we'd never know I guess... like what I see as blue you may see as green, and as long as we call the same things the same colours we'd never know

yea. it often happens that i disagree with my friends like "it's orange!" and "no! it's red!" or that might just be the shade or whatever. yea.. that might not happen, but i understand

I heard in biology that men are generally much less descriptive than women about colours/ anything else for that matter! lol - it's like I describe "blonde" as yellow, and indigo, violet, magenta are all purple to me!
Ask your parents/friends I think - maybe if they believed in you, you'd be able to? - more easily at least anyway. Can take time. I mean also believe in yourself as a person, because you are pretty genuine

Just nurture - practise, believe in yourself, pour passion into it, and it'll shine! There are so many singers out there who have more confidence than they should do (like I showed you), and still get huge success and still have fans - if you're already better than them by being able to sing in the first place (in your fan's views) then you're already set
