"I don't pretend to be captain weird. I just do what I do."

John Christopher Depp III, widely known as Johnny Depp, was born June 9th 1963. Johnny is of Irish/German descent and Cherokee ancestry. Before becoming an actor, Depp worked many odd jobs to support himself, such as a telemarketer who sold pens. Later his first wife introduced him to Nicolas Cage and his film career took off slowly at first. Depp's first role (which he initially rejected) was in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Then he starred in the FOX's TV series 21 Jump Street. The show was a success and he instantly became a teen idol, something Johnny absolutely hated. Frustrated by his new status as a teen idol, Depp began taking roles in offbeat, unusual films, beginning with Cry-Baby (1990) directed by John Waters and later, at age 27, he starred as an artificial man in Edward Scissorhands, directed by Tim Burton. Even if weren't for these inovative directors, Johnny probably would not be as well known for the quirky parts he plays now.

Besides acting, Johnny has directed the film "The Brave" which he also starred in with Marlon Brando. He is also a musician and can be heard playing slide guitar on the Oasis song "Fade In-Out" (from Be Here Now, 1997); on Shane MacGowan's first solo album; and as a member of P, a group featuring Butthole Surfers singer Gibby Haynes.

Johnny Depp Trivia:
Depp reportedly has 12 tattoos, including a Jolly Roger emblem on his ankle and "Wino Forever" (originally "Winona Forever"; after his break-up with Winona Ryder, Depp had the tattoo altered).

Adopted Goldeneye, the one-eyed Andalusian horse who played Gunpowder, Ichabod Crane's steed in the movie "Sleepy Hollow", thereby saving him from the glue factory.

Appears in Tom Petty's 1991 music video, "Into The Great Wide Open".

Has a song about him by famed Chicago street artist, Wesley Willis. It's hilarious!

He wanted some of his teeth to be goldcapped for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003), but knew that the directors would never agree, so he went out and got lots more than he wanted capped. He then showed the directors, and they decided to make him give up a few, so he got some taken off. He had only gotten the extras so he could negotiate with the directors, while pretending that he wanted all his teeth capped.

After River Phoenix died outside his L.A. club The Viper Room from a drug overdose in 1993, Depp was accused of selling drugs.

Before Depp turned it into The Viper Room, the building was owned by famous gangster, Bugsy Segal.

Depp has acknowledged he hurt himself physically at a young age because of his insecurities and family problems. He has seven or eight scars from where he would practice self-harm. In a 1993 Details magazine interview Johnny explained his self-injury, "My body is a journal in a way. It's like what sailors used to do, where every tattoo meant something, a specific time in your life when you make a mark on yourself, whether you do it yourself with a knife or with a professional tattoo artist." In 1999, Depp admitted that to this day, his self-image "isn't that alright", although he maintains he is happier than he's ever been.

Depp in deep thought...
