PORTISHEAD | a history in quotes by the band
- Geoff Barrow on Beth: "I thought she had a major voice, but I just didn't think we'd do anything together. At that point her voice was so way out for what we wanted. From what we were doing. And her voice sounded a little bit different from where she is now. We've kind of, like, changed together. Since we've been working together, we've changed so we've adapted to each other."
- Beth Gibbons on Geoff: "That's the difference between Geoff and me: I am a very sensitive person, very impulsive and emotional. He's objective, pragmatic and more aloof. He absolutely has got no idea what I'm singing about. He's not interested and he admits that. He's more concerned with the general impression: the lyrics and the music, it has to fit together. And he is right in that."
- Geoff Barrow on Adrian: "Adrian is an excellent jazz player. He also plays bass, and we work on musical ideas together. In fact he's a more musical person than I am. So when it comes down to old samples like what I need to create something, we work on together. I get him to play something and then we work on it. He's also a good producer. He always wanted to play odd kind of spy music, and that kind of tremolo guitar. But because he was a jazz player nobody was particularly interested. So when we clicked, it was excellent. Because that's what I was looking for."
- A Difficult Beginning: Geoff met Beth at an Enterprise Training Scheme, a course for starting enterprisers and, after listening to each other's tapes, they came to the conclusion that they wouldn't get along. "Pretty soon it was: nice to meet you, bye" says Beth looking back on their first encounter. But when Beth's singing career didn't immediately take off, she drifted back to Geoff. The awkward collaboration produced its first song, "It could be sweet" -- it would prove to be the seed that would grow into a full ensemble of strange characters. After experienced jazz guitarist Adrian Utley and technician Dave McDonald joined them Portishead was finally born.
- More than a name, it's an identity: The name "Portishead" came from the West Coast shipping suburb of Bristol where Geoff Barrow was raised. The story goes that Geoff was known as "that guy from (the town) Portishead" when he first began making music on the first Massive Attack album.

I believe that the new album is titled "Saturine" and should come out during the summer. Don't quote me on that, because I'll have to check on the date again, but, yes, new music by Portishead is oncoming! Yay!

Awesome! Yes, I agree, it will be nice to hear their new songs. They've kept us waiting for a long while... Also, glad you like the design. I'll be adding more info and videos here soon. Any requests?
~V
I haven't seen any of their videos other than Only You. And I wouldn't mind seeing that one every time I visit this page.
Yay, then you're in luck! I just added a small collection of their videos, most of which you haven't seen, so enjoy. Of course "Only You" is here, too.
