Night Watch

The new face of terror
is "cool as hell!"
- Ain't It Cool News
Excerpts from the official site for Ночной Дозор (Night Watch):
For as long as humanity has existed, there have been "Others" among us; Witches, Vampires and Shape-Shifters who are soldiers in the eternal war between Light and Dark.
Light Others protect mankind from Dark Others, who plague and torture humans.
Over 1000-years ago a truce was struck between Gesser, Lord of the Light, and Zavulon, General of Darkness. They agreed that no one could be forced to good or evil, people must choose freely for themselves. To uphold this truce, each side established underground forces; the soldiers of the Light would be called Night Watch, making sure Dark Others obeyed the truce. And the soldiers of Darkness would be called Day Watch, to do the same.
Ancient prophecy foretells that one day the Great One will arrive who can end the threat of an apocalyptic battle between Light and Dark Others. That day has come, and the Great One, once he or she is identified, must choose whether to destroy the light within or battle the surrounding darkness. This choice will reveal mankind's destiny.
1992:
Anton Gorodetsky, a broken-hearted man, desperate to win back his fiancée, seeks out the black magic services of a witch. This Dark Other, about to use her magic for evil, is arrested by the Night Watch moments before for completing her spell. The cataclysmic event awakens Anton to discover that he is an Other. Now he must choose whether to become a protector of light or warrior of darkness.
Today:
Somewhere on the streets of Moscow the "Great One" wanders, oblivious to his or her powers. Anton, along with his Night Watch team, race to find and protect the Great One from Zavulon and his Day Watch vampires who seek to plunge the world into darkness. Whoever reaches the Great One first will hold the balance of power in their hands and control the fate of humanity.
NIGHT WATCH (NOCHNOI DOZOR) is the first installment of a trilogy based on the best-selling Russian sci-fi novels of Sergei Lukyanenko (which also includes Day Watch and Dusk Watch). This visionary horror fantasy film features a dazzling mix of mind-blowing effects, adrenaline-fuelled action and suspenseful terror.
NIGHT WATCH (NOCHNOI DOZOR) was an instant smash hit in its native Russia when it was released in July 2004 shattering all previous box office records. Made for a mere $4 million, the film surpassed both LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING and SPIDER-MAN 2 at the Russian box office. Internationally acclaimed, it was also Russia's contender for the 2004 foreign language Oscar® award.

It is his wisdom and powers that will be instrumental in saving Anton from a near-fatal encounter with the Warriors of Darkness. It is easier for a man to destroy the light inside himself
than it is to defeat the darkness all around him.

As long as there has been a truce between Light and Dark, there has been the legend of the Virgin who will have the power to unleash the vortex on the city of Moscow. Unbeknownst to herself, Svetlana is the legendary virgin. Cursed by an unknown source, she wreaks havoc and misfortune wherever she goes. Unless the ancient curse is lifted, Svetlana's touch of death will be her doom and that of all mankind. For when the virgin returns, the final battle between good &

and after that, your life is completely changed.
Zavulon
(Leader of the Day Watch)
A master of all that is evil and dark, Zavulon rules over the Day Watch. Though the Warriors of Darkness have maintained balance with the Protectors of Light for centuries, Zavulon and the vampires that make up the Day Watch are desperate to command the soul of the Great One. As he watches and waits for the Night Watch to make a single mistake, he fantasizes about the demise of the Light Others that will forever shift the balance of power to the dark.I've been waiting centuries for this.
Those fated to drown will drown.

What I love about this movie is I like seeing how other cultures handle modern fairy tales. The basic plot is based on several Russian myths -- very refreshing to see that this movie or series has NOT been Americanized. That's what I hated about the American version of "The Grudge" and "The Ring" -- it's like they change too much in order to please an American audience not prone to reading subtitles. Oh, well.
Can ya tell I'm a fan yet?

Have you seen The Eye? That is great too!
=( Please tell your brother that I am gay myself & that I am offended by his comments. Gay is not bad. We are not bad. We have feelings =(
Yes, I've seen The Eye and loved it! I hope they never remake it. It was so deliriously creepy.
I understand about the gay thing, thing is I'm bi-sexual and have several other family members who are gay. You'd have to know my brother to realize he's not intentionally being insulting, but you know those straight guys like to deal the crap. He gets picked on just as hard by our gay friends -- they say "you're so gay" at each other all the time it's like black dudes calling each other by the "N" word (which can really grate on the nerves). So he came up with a whole justification for it. He's told me that he calls things "gay" not as a bad thing, and not to describe something as "lame" but as something that's just too happy or too nice that it's "gay" in the sense that it's too much for him to handle. To that, I tease him back and just call him gay because he's too much for me to handle at times. Oh, well. Dumb, I know, and I'm sorry if that stung ya.
We get into heated arguments over gay marriage, too. Mark's more conservative than I am and it can be embarassing, and hurtful, in public when he goes on one of his stupid Republican tirades. AND we grew up with a gay older brother, so what gives? I hate it when the debate continues on the homefront. I do what I can to educate Mark more, but it can be difficult.
