"I've always fantasized about being on TV. And I was. Then I fantasized about being in the movies. What could be better than captain of a space ship? I get to ride horses, shoot guns, have adventures ..."

Best known as Captain Malcom 'Mal' Reynolds on the cult TV show Firefly (created by Joss Whedon), don't be surprised if Nathan Fillion soon becomes more of a household name.
Before he was the plucky bad guy hero of Firefly, Nathan might have continued to walk in his parents' shoes as an English teacher, if he hadn't of landed a role as Joey Buchanan on the ABC soap One Life to Live. He would later play a role in the made-for-TV movie Ordeal in the Arctic (1993) and as a series regular, Johnny Donnely, in Two Guys and a Girl (1998). In addition to recieving his role as Captain Mal in Firefly, we later saw Nathan as preacher-gone-wrong and 'big bad', Caleb, in the last season of Whedon's Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
A native of Alberta, Canada, Nathan is also a well known actor on his home turf. He appeared in the Canadian television movie, Strange and Rich (1994), has done theatrical performances in Edmonton's Fringe Theatre Festivals (where he was originally discovered) and he participated in Theatre sports as a member of Rapidfire Theatre, an Edmonton theater company. He also appeared in Die Nasty, a soap opera spoof-improv performed at a local Edmonton theater.

So, what's Nathan Fillion up to now?

If the rumors prove true, Nathan will be moving to Wisteria Lane to join the cast of Desparate Housewives this fall playing Dana Delaney's much younger husband.

Premiered on April 15, 2007, Nathan starred as lead Alex Tully in DRIVE! The show was a lot like 24 crossed with LOST and loaded with mystery and suspense.  Broadcast by FOX, DRIVE was canceled after only four episodes aired (six episodes were shot before cancelation) and the network promises to air the final episodes sometime in July 2007 or will air them exclusively online. DRIVE is all about a group of ordinary people who are asked to participate in an illegal cross-country automobile race. First prize is $32 million. Each character has their own reasons for joining the race and has personal obstacles to face. Nathan's character, Alex, joins the race in an effort to find/rescue his kidnapped wife. In the show Nathan drives a tan 1972 Ford F-100 and a black 1970 Dodge Challenger.  Nice.
Nathan most recently starred as Bill Pardy in the slick horror flick, Slither. Nathan has also just finished filming a romantic comedy Waitress, where he appears as Dr. Pomatter and stars opposite Kerri Russell.  Released in January 2007, Nathan played leading man Abe Dale in White Noise 2: The Light a drama that explores the Near Death Experience pheomenon (NDE).  And, for those of you who are big fans of LOST, in episode 6 of season three, Nathan played Kevin, a police officer who married Kate (Evangeline Lilly) in a flashback.

Fun Facts:
Nathan is a distant relative of Jubal Early, a Confederate Civil War general, whose name was later used by Joss Whedon for a villian bounty hunter in the episode "Objects in Space" of Firefly.

One of four actors from Firefly who voiced superheroes on Justice League Unlimited (2001). He voiced the western themed Vigilante while Adam Baldwin voiced Hal Jordan, the Silver Age Green Lantern, Gina Torres voiced Vixen, and Morena Baccarin voiced Black Canary. One of his other voice acting roles was for Gao the Lesser in the video game Jade Empire and Frisbee Guy in an episode of King of the Hill (2001).
During the filming of the fight scene between Mal and the Operative in Serenity, Nathan repeatedly slammed his face into the plexiglass floor to make it look more real. As a result, his left cheek became swollen. Nobody realized this until his make up was being touched up by the make-up artist.
Nathan had small roles in Steven Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan (Minnesota Ryan) and Blast from the Past (Cliff, Eve's Ex-Boyfriend). Other small roles were in Dracula 2000 (Father David) and in The Outer Limits 1999 episode Starcrossed (Michael Ryan).

Nathan once worked as a karaoke presenter. His signature tune was Beyond the Sea.  He also had a job singing telegrams!

Nathan has a tattoo of an Egyptian glyph on his right hip. When he appeared in a nude scene on an episode of Firefly, fans have made a lot of strange guesses as to what the tattoo was. Nathan has said that it was just a thing he did because he liked Ancient Egypt.

At university, Nathan majored in Art and minored in Drama to round out his curriculum. However, when he started acting on the side to help pay for school he was hooked. And the rest they say is history!

Re: Nathan Fillion
In answer to someone who asked me privately in email:

No, I do not personally know Nathan Fillion and I haven't met him.  Yet.  If I ever do, I'm sure it'll take place during a convention and it'll be all "Hi, there, like what you do" with him saying "thanks, Val" and then it'll be on to the next fan.  Whenever I meet actors I like, that's usually how it goes, but every once and a while I'll get a moment with them.  I'm not a big autograph hound, what I do is collect stories from famous or semi-famous people I meet -- stories like the time I met George Takei (Mr. Sulu of Star Trek fame)...

It happened at Gen-Con in Milwaukee and I went with a group of friends who all loved to dress up in medieval garb (except for me -- let's just say it made going to Burger King very interesting).  One of my girlfriends in particular wore a very revealing corset/bodice and her skirt was low on her hips enough to give her added clevage from behind.  She was a big gal and usually most people noticed her ample bosom, but something about her bottom caught Takei's attention and he slapped her on the rump!  It was so unexpected.  Almost rude.  But incredibly funny.  Like dominos falling one after the other, a giggle-loop spread throughout the crowd.  I will never forget the day Sulu slapped my friend's ass!

Okay, folks, I finally got this page done.  Don't worry, I'll only be more pleased with myself once you all dig it.  Just glad I could oblige!

So I am the first to dig it!! Anyone else?

I have no idea who this man is, by the way, but that is why I am going to read all of the information that you have provided =) Thanks!

Glad you dig it.

Don't worry if you aren't that familiar with Nathan Fillion yet, I have a feeling he'll soon become a household name among us sci-fi/horror fans.  I really think Nathan is really funny and should also star in a few more comedies.  He's got that "guy next door turned superhero" look.  I could imagine him as a young Han Solo or Green Latern.

He recently appeared in the fall finale of LOST in the episode called "I Do" where he played a police officer who married Kate.

Re: Nathan Fillion
Actually, I might have to edit this a bit.  I just re-read my opening sentence and it's quite silly sounding.  Oh, well, no rush to be perfect.  Just spreading the word that Nathan is, not just cool, but waaaaaaaaaay cool.

Re: Nathan Fillion
Thanks!  I've gotten a lot of responses on it outside of Mindsay, mostly from Nathan fans on MySpace.  This is sorta a "little known" wiki page made just for the fans.  Some of my info I have to update.  I've enjoyed putting up trivia about one of my favorite actors and I truly believe his career is going to sky rocket soon (I'm usually right about these things, so we'll see!), or so I wish!

I'm now seeing other people make wiki pages for their favorite actors and actresses, too.  So now I don't feel too much like a stalker  Smiley

Oh, I know, just being silly.  My way of remaining modest!

Re: Nathan Fillion
What I'd like to do next is a wiki on each of the Firefly actors to tie in with the Firefly and Serenity wiki pages.  Now I just gotta find more time to devote to something like that...

Re: Nathan Fillion
Will they each have separate designs? You know, to reflect their personalities? You cannot give River the pink horsies & big fluffy white clouds!!
valentinaxxx on
Re: Nathan Fillion
Exactly!  And that will take a long while, or maybe just one afternoon without interuption, to complete.  I like designing pages for people, celebrities or actors or not, that reflect something about them.  I consider it something of a design challenge.  When I chose to do a page on Nathan, I first watched a few other tv shows he's been on.  There's something about his manner, voice, and attitude that reminds me of film noir, so I selected a silver and black kind of design.  I think besides soap operas and sci-fi films, he'd be great as a detective in a dark David Lynch-ian kind of movie.  His acting style is very diverse.  He picks up on little quirks and nuances that other actors just don't bring to the table.

Hey, I added a link about Nathan from an Italian website.  Besides a silvery look, someone out there picked a lovely lime and lemon theme to accent Nathan's blue eyes in a way I didn't catch.  I like how other people notice things like that, too!

Re: Nathan Fillion
Yeah, it is great to find other great designers like that, eh? You get to, like, bounce ideas off of each other =)
