Hal Sparks

Hal Sparks was born Harry Magee Sparks III on September 25, 1969 in Cincinnati Ohio. He is an actor, comedian, and musician, and is best known for his role of Michael Novotny in the Showtime series Queer as Folk. He has appeared on TV and in movies, performs stand-up comedy across the country, and is the lead vocalist and guitarist for the band Zero 1, formerly The Hal Sparks Band.

Hal lived in Peaks Mill, Kentucky until he was 14 years old, at which point he moved to Winnetka, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. He began performing stand-up comedy when he was 15, and in 1987 he was named the Funniest Teenager in Chicago. Two weeks after he graduated from high school, Hal packed his car and moved to Los Angeles where he spent many years working behind the scenes in the entertainment business trying to break through. He managed to grab a few small parts here and there, and eventually he formed his own sketch group called Here Comes the Neighborhood.

In 1999, Hal was hired by E! as a host of Talk Soup. In June of 2000 he landed the part of Zoltan, the cult leader in Dude Where's My Car? and shortly thereafter he was chosen to play the part of Michael Novotny in Queer as Folk.

Hal has several black belts in martial arts, and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese. He is a Buddhist and is interested in Feng Shui and other facets of the eastern culture. He's very conscious of what he puts into his body, and therefore has never smoked, drank alcohol, or done drugs, and he is a vegetarian. Hal donates a lot of time and energy to various charities including AIDS charities and animal rescue and advocacy programs.

"Never quit. Always improve. Fear nothing...and floss."
"If you don't sing your song... nobody will."
