Introduction: Formed in 1995 in Helsinki, Finland. H.I.M. is the second rock band to have success outside of Scandinavia. Their music has a feirce persona which lacks in most modern rock bands. Their first show was in December of the same year in Helsinki. This was when H.I.M. was a support band for Kauko Rövhkä. The show ended up being a disaster. The public had thought that H.I.M. was a nickname of Rövhkä and were dissatisfied with the bands sound and technical problems on stage.  They had also played many covers because they did not have a sufficient amount of mateiral to play live.  They covered Black Sabbath, Depeche Mode, Kiss, and Type O' Negative.

The band is also widely recognizable by their heartagram design. It consists of a heart and a pentagram, which symbolizes the contrast between life and death, love and hate or even love and death together. Valo has also said that "The heartagram stands for H.I.M. as a band, as an entity, and for 'love metal' in general." Despite a common misconception perpetuated by their sign, HIM is not a satanic band.
