Who hasn't heard a ghost story? The belief in an afterlife convinces many to also believe that it's possible for the disembodied spirit of a person to survive in the world long after physical death. The possibility of ghosts inhabiting our space is not fiction to some -- many seek answers and are eager to share their encounters with the restless dead. Others prefer to not seek encounters with entities that exist beyond their experience. Others simply seek to prove or disprove that ghosts exist. Are you one of them?

The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall:

Possibly the most famous photographed ghost in history... Could she have once been Lady Dorothy Walpole?
Captured by photographers Captain Provand and his assistant Indre Shira while photographing the historic Raynham Hall for Country Life Magazine in the late afternoon of 19th September, 1936, the photograph at left is thought to be the ghost of Lady Walpole. Known as "The Brown Lady" because each time she is seen, she is wearing a brown brocade dress of 17th century origin, she was the sister of Sir Robert Walpole who was considered to be England's first Prime-minister. Her life was short and tragic, and she suffered from a broken heart. Firstly, her father refused consent for her to marry her first love, Second Viscount Townshend. Later she was seduced into a torrid affair with Lord Wharton. Later, after the death of Townshend's first wife, she was allowed to marry her lost love. But they did not live happily ever after. After Lady Walpole was married to the man she loved, he learned about her previous misconduct with Wharton and ordered her to be kept locked in her apartments at Raynham Hall. She died at the age of 40, on 29th March, 1726. Her death was officially reported as being caused by smallpox, yet many believe poor Lady Walpole died of either a broken heart or a broken neck after being pushed down the grand staircase -- the very staircase she is reportedly photographed descending in a ghostly form. It is said she haunts Raynham Hall because, after being locked in her apartments, she was kept from seeing her children.

"They are unscientific. They contain no matter and have no energy and therefore according to the laws of science, do not exist except in people's minds. Of course, the laws of science contain no matter and have no energy either and therefore do not exist except in people's minds...It's best to refuse to believe in either ghosts or the laws of science." -- Robert Pirsig's "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" (1974)

Types of Ghosts:

  • Disincarnate: not of physical material, without a body or form, and not essentially "alive" as we know it.
  • Spirits: the word "spirit" comes from the Latin spiritus, meaning "breath." Spirits are self-aware ethereal substances particular to an individual being once living or still alive. In many religious traditions, a soul is thought to incorporate the inner essence of each living being, and to be the true basis for sentience, considered to be immortal and to pre-exist their incarnation in flesh. Since the soul pre-exists the living being, and is immortal, it can also exist after physical existence and can wander the world of the living. A spirit is therefore a wandering soul; energy without a body, a personality existing outside a person.
  • Entities: a spirit that actually exists that may, or most likely, NOT be human. Entities are very rare to experience, and many commonly reported encounters with entities are usually determined to be hallucinations. Real entities can be called to manifestation, and may remain dormant for years. Entities are often described as demonic or angelic, depending upon whether or not they seem to be a threat to a person. Since they exist outside of normal human experience, most people are frightened by them. Entities are known to haunt specific areas or may attach themselves to a particular person, and they seem to feed on intense emotions. Getting hysterical over it seems to make the entity stronger. Once ignored, or seemingly exercised by a holy person, they seem to diminish. No one knows for sure what entities really are.
  • Poltergeist: German for "noisy spirit", these ghosts seem to be possibly an entity and/or pyschic phenomenon linked to adolescents under great stressful circumstances. Poltergeists are also thought to be the ghosts of lost dead people struggling to communicate with the world of the living, often attaching themselves to the sensitive, hence making adolescent children prime targets. Poltergeist activity is experienced in different phases; the first phase is a sensual attack (cold spots, strange noises, footsteps, weird odors, animals behave strangely, feelings of being watched), phase two is a direct attack (the smells and noises are directed at someone, graduating into whispers, screams, moaning), phase three is actual presence (sometimes appearing as a cloudy vapor, mists, electrical appliances turn on and off, unseen hands grabbing people, writing or scratches on walls appear, could also manifest as a dark figure), the fourth phase is momentum (this is the stage where objects move of their own accord, things are broken, furniture shakes, levitation), the final phase is the peak of high energy (heavy objects are pulled or dropped, electric shock sensations, hair being pulled, skin is scratched, and the target of the haunting is sometimes possessed by the spirit). Usually Poltergeist activity does not last for very long, usually ending as the target of the haunting matures or moves to a different residence.
  • Apparitions: an insubstantial entity that can manifest in a human or animal form. Sometimes apparitions appear transparent or fuzzy, appear and disappear suddenly, can cast shadows, be seen in mirrors or as a reflection on glass. Some are accompanied by smells or sounds. Most are reported to appear to bring a message or warning to the living.
  • Crisis Apparitions: experienced on the anniversary of a highly emotional or historical event.
  • Deathbed Apparitions: a seemingly angelic or misty form appearing before a death.
  • Ghost Ships: linked to disasters and shipwrecks.
  • Apparition of the Living: a highly controversal type of ghost usually appearing before the arrival of a living person, or is the apparition of a living person who is projecting their concerns or thoughts to another living person.
  • Ghost Calls: an audible apparition experienced as a phone call from a dead person.
  • Corpse Candles, or Corpse Lights: canwll corfe, as they are called in Welsh, are mysterious lights that seem to hover or bob over the ground and stop at houses or other sites where a death is eminent.
  • Atmospheric Phenomenon: usually associated with a particular location where conditions are ripe for electromagnetic or other natural disturbances. Therefore this sort of "haunting" is not from a ghost at all, but attributable to the electromagnetic and psychological programming of people. When someone enters a place that has a bad history or somewhere that just "feels" unpleasant, people will naturally react hysterically, and often what they perceive to be a ghost in the atmosphere is a result of Pareidolia (a psychological phenomenon involving a vague and random stimulus being mistakenly perceived as something recognizable in physical reality -- in other words, something that isn't really there is seen as a face in the clouds or hearing whispers on the wind).
  • Residual Phenomenon: are possibly "recordings" of an event in time that are left at a location, played back at a later time to only be experienced at that specific location. A traumatic or tragic event in history leaves such an enduring mark on a place, that it seems it can never be forgotten or erased from the area. Apparitions seen at these specific places always seem to be doing the same thing over and over without ever changing their actions or state of dress. These are most commonly experienced at old battle fields.  (information provided by valentinaxx )

Ghost Stories from Mindsay bloggers

When loved ones come to call...(nicholeo)

I have many personal experiences with the paranormal.  Ironically, the one that frightened me the most was the 1st.  I was sleeping at my grandmothers house, and I awoke to the television turning on.  For some reason, it did that a few times a week, at 11pm.  This time I decided to investigate.  I crawled out of bed, not worrying about my glasses...I knew the house well, so it didn't occur to me that I would need it.  I first went to the restroom...but that is irrelevent.  When I walked out to go into the living room,  I went to the tv, turned it off, and went back where I came to go to bed.  As I turned the knob on my bedroom door, I heard a "ahem", and the tv came back on.  This was when the hair on my neck stood on end.  I looked around the room, and walked back to the tv to shut it off again.  I looked around the room, and reached for the knob, and pushed it...and within seconds of the lights going out, I saw a silver shimmer of an outline of a man sitting in the recliner...it faded within seconds, but it was almost like looking at a negative of film...when the spectre faded, there was a smile, and what seemed to be a "whoosh" of air all around me and the smell of old spice.  I told my grandma about it the next day, and she told me "You think your grandpa is coming back to check on you huh?"...I said, he did when I was little, he always protected me... She smiled and patted my hand...She said that she smells the old spice every once in awhile, even now...I don't know why this scared me...perhaps it was the fact that I didn't know who it was, or what for that matter, but I know that it would not be my last...

My Ghost Story (facedown):

Oktober Fest. Who's idea was it to EVER throw anything this lame? And why do Germans spell it so funky?

But that's beside the point. The point is, I'm sitting at a table, bored as hell, when all the while a secret gem is hidden underneath my feet.

"I'm going to go to the bathroom." Says I.

"Okay, honey." Says Mom.

Down the stairs. To the left. Boring Wall, boring wall...door. Open door. Large, heavy, scratched red paint. I peek inside, no bathroom, but something way more interesting. A nightclub.

Forgetting all intentions of my bladder, I enter the dark room lit by red lights. No one's here except for a normal band on the stage, playing normal nightclub music.

I never saw the transparency of the people. I blame the lighting. I walked right on past them and behind the bar. The music stopped.

I walked back out, and the band was gone. Not a trace of them left.

Freaky, no?

Oh, but there's more.

Shaking it off, I continue to venture deeper, this time into the storage room. I discover not only is this a nightclub, it used to be an underground prison. Does this frighten me?

No fucking duh.

There's doors, beds, sheets, sculptures...all splattered in, dare I say it...blood. Scared beyond wit now, I rush towards the boring safety of Oktober Fest above.

But wait, look at that really cool door! It's a foot off the ground! Open it, open it!

Obivously, I have no choice but to open it now. With a clank and a swish, the door flys open and I'm hit with a rush of cold air. I don't climb up into it, but I lean over for a look in.

A small hallway with no doors and no windows. Just gray dampness. A hallway filled with memories.

Footsteps, whispers, screams, blue hands. All coming from a dead hallway. A slam of the door and I'm upstairs in 10 seconds, tops. I'd had enough.

Was it ghosts? A trick of the mind maybe? Who knows.

Re: Ghosts
I was canoing on Lake of the Woods in Northern Ontario Canada when my Christian expedition stopped at the Sultana Island to tour the old gold mines. This was a famous gold producing region in the 1880s and right up until the mines dried up in the 1920's. Little did we know that Sultana is VERY haunted by two ghosts who dwell at the bottom of an open chasm in the center of this tiny island. They are dangerous - and they have hurt many people over the years. I wrote the whole story of how they chased us off the island here on Orato.com, which is a Canadian citizen journalism site. Its the best ghost story because its all true!

“According to Le-way”

(A fair judgment for everyone)

It was a long time ago but some of you may remember. It was the fall of 1992 and Ozzy was in the midst of his No More Tears Tour. I bought two tickets but my companion copped out at the last minute. I was not about to miss my first opportunity to see Ozzy live so I went by myself! The months and years that lead up to the concert consisted of a lot of drug abuse, especially LSD and marijuana! On this particular night all I had was a bag of weed and enough money to buy some drinks once I arrived. My prior experience with LSD and my maturity level contributed to the events of the evening. During the concert I screamed out several phrases that I hoped would fuck with my fellow concert goers. The words “I’m here!” and “Blue Ball” had to do with a couple of LSD trips I had recently had the opportunity to experience. I was quite a distance from the stage so it took me off guard when Ozzy appeared to take notice, look in my direction and even put his arm out as if he thought I was Hitler. I thought nothing more of it till the next day…

The following morning I went about drinking beer and smoking weed as usual. I decided to put in the No More Tears CD in tribute of the concert I had just attended when it happened. There is no way I could have known it at the time but I would never be the same! I played it over and over again in a state of bewilderment that grew more and more enticing every time I heard what was on it. It was me! It was my name! My name was on an Ozzy Osbourne song! I couldn’t believe it! I have since come to accept it.

The following months developed into full blown schizophrenia. There seemed to be nothing I could do to get the refrigerator to shut up or find the listening devices and cameras the radio station must have put in my room. It was like the Earth itself was desperately trying to tell me something. The days and weeks turned into months and eventually years that I would have to spend like this. There are no words to describe what I went through or any way to truly exaggerate it (other than to say it was impossible). I often thought of getting back at the demon people who were clearly to blame for my situation. It wasn’t so much that I was crazy as it made me mad. I wanted someone to blame for it even if they never heard a thing I said. Eventually help found me because I was incapable of finding it myself.

There is a part of this story that I should take a second to tell you about. By this time in my life I had turned my back on Christianity. I could no longer justify belonging to a religion that refuses to be fair in its very nature. My decision as a teenager to become a Christian was made in haste and with little understanding of the religion itself. As a young man I decided that Christianity did not do the God of my understanding justice. I wanted to believe in a perfect God and, to me, that meant He had to be fair. It’s not that I had a problem with Christian morals and values, although I do consider myself a bi-sexual. I had a problem with Jesus specifically. It shouldn’t matter what you call or do not call God. God knows who His true followers are! He is the God of everyone or He is the God of no one. Our beliefs do not determine what is and what isn’t. Surely, God is as reasonable as we are! In the words of Ozzy Osbourne, “No sympathizing God is insanity!”

So far as I’m concerned the worlds religions are just a bunch of different ways to worship the same God. Le-way (what I call my religion) attempts to go about it in a way that allows people to be themselves without having to necessarily make any major changes in order to deserve being called a believer. Le-way is for all those sinners out there who want to believe in God but aren’t willing to completely turn their lives around. They want to be sinners but still receive Gods love and affection. I doubt there is anyone (no matter how bad of a person they are) that truly deserves to spend forever in a place like hell. Sure they should suffer but forever should be based on forever and not a human lifetime. Everyone should get what they deserve and that’s what Le-way is all about.

One day last fall I was getting drunk in the woods not too far from my parents house where I was staying when something unusual happened. I saw what appeared to be a dark figure resembling a knight in shining armor materialize before me. The creature, whatever it was, stood before me without saying a word for what seemed like forever. Then without any warning reached for the sword at it’s side and struck me down with a single blow to the head. The next thing I knew I was in the spirit and standing before the Lord. God did not say a word to me but instructed a 4 headed beast to show me what is to come.

I was surprised to hear the beast speak in such an innocent tone to me that I was not frightened. The beast explained to me in great detail what I am supposed to share with the rest of the world. The way to go to Heaven is to surrender the knowledge of good and evil but there are as many ways to go about this as there are names for God. I was right to say that it doesn’t matter what you call or do not call God. God knows who His true followers are! People who surrender their knowledge of good and evil will become at one with God and serve Him in the same way our arms and legs do us. This is what it means to achieve Nirvana or go to Heaven.

The
beast went on to explain that God has prepared a place for the rest of us too. Each head of the beast took turns speaking as he described it as a kind of purgatory that will fulfill Gods wishes. He called this place Utopia and exclaimed that it‘s where bad things won‘t happen to good people. The better you live your life, the better your life will be. In other words there will be Perfect On-going Justice, like karma, but in a more urgent sense. Actual Free-will, or the absence of any demonic and/or psychic influences, will ensure that people are the ones responsible for their actions and deserve the consequences they reap. Just as important and even more exciting is that God promises to give everyone a Permanent 2nd Chance to Surrender the Knowledge of Good and Evil and go to Heaven. You might say that Utopia provides liberty and justice for all. With that in mind, may God bless America and bring us a miracle!

The Prayer of Le-way!

“God, whose names are great and many,

I ask that there may be justice for both friend and foe

and for myself.

Amen”
