Gale Harold was born Gale Morgan Harold III on July 10, 1969, in Decatur, Georgia. He is an actor most notably known for his role of Brian Kinney in the Showtime series Queer as Folk. Gale prefers to avoid publicity so not much is publicly known about his childhood, although he has stated that it was a "bizarre Pentecostal" experience. He has credited Jack London, David Bowie, and Gandalf, a character from the Lord of the Rings books, as early influences.
Gale graduated from The Lovett School in Atlanta, Georgia, and proceeded to Washington D.C. to attend American University. He was granted a soccer scholarship and his major was in Liberal Arts. Harold dropped out after just a year and a half, due to a conflict with his athletics coach. From there he moved to San Francisco and attended the San Francisco Art Institute to study photography. He held several different positions while residing there, including mechanic and carpenter, before moving to Los Angeles at the prompting of a friend in 1997.
In Los Angeles, Gale began an intensive two-year study of dramatic arts. When he was 28 he was accepted into the Actors Conservatory Program with the theater company A Noise Within. Three years later he landed the role of Brian Kinney on Showtime's Queer as Folk. This role led to growing popularity for Harold, who prefers to keep his personal life out of the spotlight. Fans were very curious to know if Gale was straight or gay, because he played the role of over-sexed Brian Kinney so easily and believably. Gale finally admitted after season one had come to a close that he is straight, but that he hadn't discussed it because he wanted it to have no bearing on how people viewed his character on the show, who is an unapologetic gay man who prefers casual sex to romantic intimacy.
During his years portraying Brian on QAF, Gale accepted roles in several independent films and a couple of episodes on other TV series. A year after the five-year run of QAF came to a close, Gale appeared on television again, this time as FBI agent Graham Kelton in FOX's short-lived series Vanished. His character, billed as the male lead, was killed off in episode 7. Ratings plummeted following Harold's departure, and the final few episodes were viewable only online. Gale then moved from small screen to stage, reprising the role of Dr. Cukrowicz in Tennessee Williams' play Suddenly Last Summer.
