Fooly Cooly (FLCL / フリクリ):

[

Fooly Cooly is a unique series that combines many aspects of animation, an extensive soundtrack and some outstanding writing to make one of the most bizarre animes ever created. It’s based on the character Naota, a sixth grader who lives in the city of Mabase, who feels that nothing interesting ever happens in his life. That is, until a mysterious woman on a Vespa motorbike smashes into him, causing him to change in ways he never would have expected. As Naota deals with his life and the awkward circumstances caused by the woman, named Haruko, he soon discovers that his life may be changed forever; though in a town as normal as Mabase, will Naota manage to deal with these bizarre circumstances?

What is Fooly Cooly?

No one knows...

Characters:

[
Home ] | [ Introduction ] | [ Characters ] | [ Episodes ] | [ Links ]

Nandaba Naota (ナンダバ・ナオ太)
- "Nothing amazing happens here. Everything is ordinary."

Naota is a twelve year old boy in the town of Mabase who is in the sixth grade. He lives with his father, Kamon, and is often used by his brother’s girlfriend, Mamimi. He is the main character in the series and is targeted out by Haruko in the first episode, in which the series deals with him coping with the circumstances going on around him.

Samejima Mamimi (サメジマ・マミ実)
- "He who conquers the left side, conquers the world, chief!"

Mamimi is seventeen years old and is the girlfriend of Naota’s older brother, who went to America to play baseball. She usually skips school and heads down under the bridge where she usually smokes and waits for Naota to come along; much to Naota’s dismay at times.

Haruhara Haruko (ハルハラ・ハル子)
- "That's how life is. Sometimes you're the cat, sometimes you're the mouse."

Haruko is an unknown woman of unknown origins. Most people know her as The Vespa Woman since she is usually always on her yellow Vespa wherever she goes. After she runs over Naota with her Vespa and causes weird things to come out of his head, she decides to stick with his family as a housekeeper so she can keep an eye on him; though she becomes more and more complex as the series progresses.

Nandaba Kamon (ナンダバ・カモン)
- "What is Fooly Cooly?"

Kamon is Naota’s father; he is a freelance writer who more often than not just makes up stories to get people to buy his articles. While he may not always be successful in his endeavors, his store does sell other novelties of the past, such as Crystal Pepsi, which helps finance their household.

Ninamori Eri (ニナモリ・エリ)
- "I don't think it's any big deal..."

Ninamori is in the same class as Naota and she was elected the class president. She is the daughter of the mayor of Mabase, who is often caught up in scandal, which likely had an affect on her personality. While she may seem to be sophisticated, her father’s charm has rubbed off on her and she knows how to cheat to get her way. It is also implied that she is somewhat interested in Naota romantically.

Canti (カンチ, Kanchi in Japanese)
- ".-. .. -.. . | --- -. | ... .... --- --- - .. -. --. | ... - .- .-. "

Canti is a robot that came out of Naota’s head; while he doesn’t seem to have much use, he is often used by Naota’s family to do miniscule tasks. He has a television for a head and can perform other various tasks as well, though whenever weird things comes out of Naota’s head, it’s usually Canti who does the fighting; along with Haruko.

Commander Amarao (アマラオ)
- "Cats should stick with other cats. It's only natural."

He's only there for three episodes, but he sure does make it noticed. Commander Amarao is a commander of a government base. He seems to be after Haruko and Medical Mechanica. He explains everything to us about Medical Mechanica, the terminal core, and Haruko's true identity. The most unique feature, however, would be his eye brows. Big, thick, fake eye brows that seem to hold a greater purpose. They may be to block the N.O. field, what Haruko uses to draw robots through people's heads.

Lieutenant Kitsurubami (キツルバミ)

Assistant to Commander Amarao. She's the one who goes out and tries to assassinate Canti, and ends up falling in love with him. Basically plays no real important role in the plot. She's also very disturbed by Commander Amarao's eyebrows.

Miyaji Junko (ミヤジ・ジュン子)

Naota's eccentric sixth grade teacher. Her students have given her the nickname "Miya-Jun". She seems to be constantly troubled by the problems which Naota seems to create, such as the destruction of her car or the terrible interruption of a lesson. Even on 'normal' days, however, she is pathetically inept: her attempt to teach chopstick usage to a generation of students raised on sporks ends with her unable to use them either.

Episode 1 - フリクリ

Fooly Cooly

Naota Nandaba is trying to live an ordinary life in a not-so-ordinary town, with his eccentric father and grandfather, while putting up with the advances of his older brother's teenage ex-girlfriend Mamimi. But the arrival of the pink-haired and apparently totally insane Haruko Haruhara turns Naota's life completely upside down. What does Haruko want from Naota, and why is he suddenly growing a large horn on his head?

Episode 2 - ファイスタ

Fire Starter

Naota tries to get his life back to normal, but that's not easy when Haruko and a TV-headed robot are living with him, and when he's growing another horn. Meanwhile, a string of fires have been occuring across town. Not coincidentally, Mamimi has become obsessed with the game Firestarer, as well as Naota's robot manservant (whom she calls Canti). What connection is there to the current string of fires and the one that burned down the old elementary school years ago? And why does Mamimi call her new pet (a little black kitten) "Ta-Kun", like she does with Naota?

Episode 3 - マルラバ

Marquis De Carabas

Naota's classmate, Eri Ninamori, is normally the picture of emotional calm and rational thinking. But she has problems of her own, as her father (the mayor of Mabase) is involved in both a sex scandal and a lawsuit with the Medical Mechanica corporation. Not to mention she has to convince Naota to take the title role he was chosen for in their class production of "Puss & Boots". But when she learns about Naota's horns (which this time resemble cat ears, by an astounding coincidence), to what levels will she stoop to get her way?

Episode 4 - フリキリ

Full Swing

When Haruko helps defeat Mabase’s baseball team, which has been falling in quality ever since Naota’s brother left them, Shigekuni drafts Canti onto their baseball team to help even the odds. Meanwhile, Haruko and Kamon have been fooling around and Naota doesn’t know whether he should be disgusted or jealous, though it is getting on his nerves. However, when a mysterious man named Amarao who has really odd eyebrows comes along, Naota finds himself receiving advice about Haruko from this stranger; though as usual, Naota feels it’s just a typical day in Mabase.

Episode 5 - ブラブレ

Brittle Bullet

Naota and Haruko are in a battle with airsoft guns against Kamon and Canti, in which his father eventually challenges him to a duel. However, when some of Naota’s friends interrupt the duel and talk to him about how he saved the city from the satellite, the power gets to his head and he begins to act manly, though much to the dismay of Mamimi and others; though when another Medical Mechanica comes out to threaten the city, will Naota handle the situation as calmly as hid did the last time, despite his over-inflated ego?

Episode 6 - フリクラ

FLClimax

When Naota’s Medical Mechanica came out of his head and was destroyed, it has been looming over the factory, in the form of a giant hand, causing mist to enshroud the city. To make matters worse, Haruko and Canti are on the run from Amarao, who believes that he needs to find the Terminal Core before they do. Naota once again runs into Amarao who offers some strange advice. Though in a city as normal as Mabase, it’s really nothing new to Naota; or is it?

I'm actually taking a big of a break from it, because I get zoned into it...

Did you notice my bottomnav hack?  Scroll all the way down to the bottom navigation links...

Re: Fooly Cooly
I had to find a way to get rid of the "teal" colored tables and images because with a color scheme like this, once people see the bottomnav, it just doesn't... fit...  it's not in the color scheme...

If there's one thing about me and designs, I'm BAD at color coordination..

I have a way to remove the top nav, but that also means sacrificing everything IMG.....  lol a wiki without pics.. lol

I plan to do that with my page, but all the graphics will have to be in flash... heh

Re: Fooly Cooly
I hear ya about color coordination.  I took Color Theory when I was in college so I have a very good working understanding about what colors go with what.  One nice site to help with color combinations is Color Schemer Online v.2 -- I use that whenever I don't have access to Photoshop. Otherwise I just use the Photoshop color picker to immediately get the html hex code for the color combos. See, I'm good at picking out colors, I just don't always know what the hex code is.  I recommend using Color Schemer, it should help you out at times.

Re: Fooly Cooly
This page, was colorschemed by a Firefox extension called "Colorzilla".  All I have to do is hover on a color, and I get the hex code.  I'm not sure if you noticed, but my color palette for this page was the header picture itself.

I have that color schemer in my favorites.  Bluedacious introduced me to it.  But I also have this color schemer, but I'm still learning how to use it: [ws] Color Scheme Generator 2

You should see the way my clothes are color coordinated... they're not.  LOL

Re: Fooly Cooly
Hmmm, that's kinda what I do with Photoshop, just use an eyedropper icon that you hover over a color and you get the hex code.  Nice.

Re: Fooly Cooly
I have yet to learn Photoshop. I have it but I don't use it.  Colorzilla is an in-browser extension though, so it has it's own eyedropper and color picker and everything.  It's perfect for doing direct hex-code coloring like in wiki pages and customizing themes.
