Google Got Sued By Viacom...Now They'll Know What You Watch
YouTube has had a lot of trouble when it comes to  copyright infringement.  Many go on YouTube, not for content related to video blogs or dramatic chipmunks, but for clips from the Daily Show, Colbert Report, Scrubs,  Burn Notice, and other popular TV shows and movies.  Recently, a U.S. court ordered that YouTube's owner, Google, to hand over records for each video watched to media powerhouse Viacom.

So what does that mean?  This means that any video you watch will note your IP address, and your YouTube account name if you are using it, and what video you watch.

So what?  IP addresses can be reset, and I don't really need my YouTube account.  For one thing, not many people know how to reset their IP addresses, yours truly included.  Also, some say it's not that hard to trace the data back to a specific user.

So is YouTube safe?  Right now, it's kinda hard to tell.  Tthis ruling was fairly recent, so what Viacom does with the data is up in the air.  But if people start getting sued for thousands of dollars, like they do for illegal downloads, then we'll know.

Any advice?  Well, you can do a few things.  First off, Firefox has some add-ons that can hide your IP address. Tor-Proxy.NET Toolbar (LINK) is one example of this.  You can also lessen the amount of videos you watch while you are on your YouTube account (they get recorded).  This doesn't mean that your YouTube account is worthless; you can still use it to watch subscriptions to non-copyrighted material.

What's your opinion on this? (Like I actually care.)  Thanks for asking!  Personally, this is another step towards an invasion of privacy.  I'm not going to rant about the police state, but this isn't a good thing.  Viacom could have just gotten reparations (Google's worth a shitload), but I think they took it a step too far.

Here's a link to a CNN article talking more about this issue:LINK

Happy July 4th everybody. =)

The album is coming along

Right. This is the first of my updates on the progress of my album, and I'm also going to give you a good little tip for sound on Youtube :)

I have decided to choose 4 songs from the ones I uploaded to Youtube. I've chosen 3 already, and those songs are as follows:

Broadcast fantasy - Jeffstunes

Don't wish it away - Jeffstunes

Sight Or Sound - Jeffstunes

I'm going to make a short list of three other songs and put them to a vote. So effectively, the fourth will be chosen by voters.

I've now completed 2 other songs so far. They are "You think it's all over". Which is an adaptation of a song I wrote 2 years ago. The original version of this song was played on Spirit FM several times, which covers West Sussex in the UK. The second of those songs is "Soaked to the bone". I finished that one yesterday.

So just 4+ songs to go. I've got some tracks in mind. Some of them have been half developed so hopefully they wont take too long. It would be nice if I could finish them by the end of next week, but it will probably take me longer.

OK. Here's that tip for Youtube.

For those of you who upload songs in stereo to Youtube, and get disappointed when the audio comes out in mono, and lower quality. You might find it interesting to know that Youtube do have a higher quality version of your video.

When you make links to your videos, you will normally use the video URL. To get the higher quality version, all you have to do is add "&fmt=18" to the end of the URL. I suppose it's possible to do that with the embedding as well, but I haven't attempted that yet.

Here's an example for you. This is a link to one of my original songs:

Don't wish it away - Jeffstunes

Now the same song with the addition of "&fmt=18" to the URL

Don't wish it away - Jeffstunes

Can you hear the difference?

Now for my youtube figures.

My subscribers are now at 670.

My channel views are moving faster now, and are currently at 14,702.

My total video viewings are increasing by over 1,000 views a day now and are now at 221,328.

More updates on the album progress coming soon :)

Going on sale

I was looking for ways to increase my daily viewing figures on Youtube, when I happened upon a tool that they have in Beta at the moment. They call it "Annotations".

It lets you to put link text and/or hotspots on your videos. When I watch videos on youtube, I don't normally pay much attention to what else is on that web page. As a maker of videos myself, that is not very encouraging. However, with this tool, I can make a link pop up on the video, and that is more likely to be noticed.

So I went through most of my videos and added annotations that link back to my channel. It took me a long time. They've only been on for a day, but I've already seen a hike in traffic. Especially to my channel viewings. So it appears that it is working so far.

This is a link to my Channel on Youtube. Where most of the Annotations point to:

Jeffstunes Youtube Channel

Now for the latest on my Youtube numbers, followed by a snippet of news :)

I now have a total of 662 Subscribers.

The channel viewings are moving now and currently stand at 14,509.

The total video views are now at 216,799. It's looking like the quarter of a million figure will be passed before the end of July.

Now for a bit of news. I'm releasing an album!

It's going out on digital release only to start with. If things go well then It will also be released on CD.

The album will contain some songs I've uploaded to Youtube, and a good number of new songs that haven't seen the light of day yet. I'm quite excited about it. I'll keep my blog up to date with the progress as the release date gets nearer. Naming tracks etc :)

The Broadcast fantasy response

This is a bit of an update on the last post I put up. I recently uploaded a new song to Youtube, and the response exceeded my expectations. The name of the song was "Broadcast fantasy". It was a bit of an amusing poke at addiction to television.

My honours for this video were more than I thought they would be, and there were a couple of firsts too. Literally.

Basically, Youtube has an honours system. Which works on a daily, weekly, monthly and all time basis. There are top 100's for Most viewed, Top rated, Most discussed, Top favourites, Most responded, and some others too. There is a collective set of top 100's that are global, and then there are those that are broken down into countries. These are also broken down into categories. So you could be in the top 100 Most discussed of all videos in the world, or you could be in the top 100 most discussed Music video in the UK.

Getting into the top 100's in som countries is easier because there are less Yuotube users in those countries. The U.S. has to be the most difficult, and the U.K. is pretty difficult too. Which makes my achievement sweeter :)

I normally get a batch of honours for each video I upload, and this is because I have a fair amount of subscribers and friends on my channel, but what I got with this latest video topped it all. I got my first number 1. Not just one, but two!

#1 - Top Rated (Today) - Music (United Kingdom)

#1 - Most Discussed (Today) - Music (United Kingdom)

That happened on 4th June. I was over the moon with them. I put them in my video description as a reminder.

This is the latest on my youtube figures.

Subscribers - 651

Channel viewings - 14,196

Total video views - 211,513

I've got some interesting news coming up in my next few posts. Something I'm getting quite excited about :)
