Victoria @ MindSay
Halloween 2009
Another Halloween has passed. It makes me a little sad, because it is my favorite time of the year. Creating a costume and having something fun to do just makes it a great time.
This year was no exception. As we had my nephew for the first time, my mom and I overscheduled him. We ended up paring the night down to accommodate a more 2-year-old schedule, but we still had a blast.
I got dressed up in a costume I invented the night before, I went as a superhero. SuperLibrarian to be exact! I looked very cute if I do say so myself. My first stop of the day was to visit Clay and Lewie. I had seen them a couple weeks earlier and Clay was talking about how he couldn't wait to see my costume. I asked why he thought he'd see me and he said that he did last year......And he was right. So I went to visit in costume and was there while the boys got ready.
Clay dressed as a red ninja--and though he is posing for me, he can't help but smile. He is one happy little ninja. I think it was the swords. Lewie went as Darth Vader. In this picture I asked him to not smile and give me a Darth Vader face. This is what I got. So damn cute.
And their mother was smart enough to get a picture of SuperLibrarian with the boys. Strange enough they are the only kids I posed with all night. Somehow, even Kelly didn't think of it.
Once I got home, Simon was still sleeping. We had to wake him up to get him ready to go see Victoria and Christian. Turns out, waking my nephew is a BAD plan. He ended up having a tantrum of epic proportions and was crabby for much of the night. And he wanted nothing to do with his costume. I was pretty sad because he had the cutest costume of the night....after me.
We finally got him out of the house and off to Kelly and Mark's, but we were already very late by that time. He cried again when we got there but eventually settled down and played with the kids.
This is the best shot of the three kids that I have...I haven't seen Kelly's yet. Christian is BamBam and Victoria is Scooby-Doo. They both looked very adorable in their store bought costumes. (Hehehehe). Christian especially....the kid actually looks like Bam-Bam. That costume was perfect for him.
After leaving, we headed over to my sister's house where they were home waiting for trick-or-treaters. They live in a great neighborhood for it and their next door neighbor estimated they'd have about a hundred kids. They planned accordingly and were left with tons of candy as they only got about 70 kids.
We got there and Simon cried again. After settling down, I was trying to teach him how to trick-or-treat and he wasn't having it. But then I explained what we do when kids come to the house. He liked that part and spent a lot of time helping Uncle Chad pass out candy. Every time the bell rang he'd scream "Kids are here" and run full steam for the door. Then he'd open it and get all shy and let Chad give out the candy.
Eventually, after much coaxing and battling we got him into his ENTIRE costume for a total of one minute before he started tearing it off.
As you can see, he was pretty full of attitude once we got him in, but all said and done, how cute is that damn costume? I told my sister she better like bees because in a couple years her little tadpole is going to wear that same costume. Since this one was hardly worn.
I did manage to get this shot from the front. He wouldn't look at me and was being distracted by coloring, but look how cute! Seriously, those pain-in-the-ass wings turned out amazing.
Everybody took Simon trick-or-treating and I stayed behind to give out candy. They got him to do four houses before he quit. At the first house he chose Uncle Chad to go with him to the door. He pushed the bell (he likes doorbells) and then before they could open the door, Simon turned and ran away, scared. Uncle Chad wasn't as quick and the people opened the front door to see a grown man standing there without a costume and no child. Poor Chad.
Emily tried to explain to Simon that it is trick-or-treat not ding-dong ditch. He did the next houses fine, but wouldn't actually say trick-or-treat.
When they got back, Simon was finally in a good mood and I managed to get a quick shot of him with a smile on his face. Whew! He doesn't hate Halloween after all. Or maybe he just senses the evening is almost over.
Once the trick-or-treaters started to subside, we headed up to Applebee's to see Uncle Zack and to get some dinner.
Again, Simon was distracted by coloring, but at least Uncle Zack smiled--that's rare enough.
After dinner, we headed home and it was about 9:30. It didn't take Simon long to crash. I think he was relieved the bee torture was finally over. Good news is, we know for certain the boy likes candy bars!
And here is a quick shot from my friend Sonya, who we didn't get to see. Dylan the chicken and Jaysa the ladybug are good friends of Simon and we were hoping we would get to trick-or-treat with them, but it just didn't work out.
All in all, it was a fun Halloween for everyone NOT dressed in a bee costume. And did anyone else notice that I was the ONLY adult dressed up?
I hope you all had a fun and safe Halloween!

Stealing Thunder
If you read my blog at all, you must know of my friend Kelly (better known to the blogosphere as kjhump). Well, last night, I watched her darling children so that she could take her husband out to dinner. The Cherokee Sirloin Room does a free steak dinner the Thursday of your birthday, and today is Mark's birthday.
Which, of course, brings us to:
Happy Birthday Mark!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (32 exclamation points in case you were wondering....)
Mark reads my blog on a regular basis, so I just have to wonder if he'll see that before I get to his house tonight for his birthday party?
At any rate, if you've ever visited kjhump's blog, you'd know that it is chock full of stories about her kids. Well, I'm going to jump on her bandwagon and tell a couple cute stories about them. (Oh and I also beat her to wishing Mark a virtual happy birthday...)
After Mark and Kelly left, the kids and I were playing in the basement. From across the room, I could see Christian tugging on his diaper. (C is almost 20 months) I asked his what's up, but he didn't feel like answering. Then, a short while later, he came within smelling distance--I immediately knew what the problem was. I told Victoria (3.5 years) that he had a poopy diaper. She told me that I better take him up to his room and change him, that's what mommy does. I said okay, well, let's go change him and get ready him ready for bed, its time to be done playing down here. She responded with, "its okay, he doesn't need to be changed". Because, you see, that would crimp her playtime. I laughed and said, "come here and smell him and then try and tell me he doesn't need to be changed." Sure enough, she came across the room to where he was sitting on the floor and she got down on her knees, bent over and put her face right up against that dirty diaper and then she took a big whiff. She jumped back, crinkled up her nose and said, "okay he DOES need to be changed."
I laughed till I had tears in my eyes. I sure wish you could have seen the look on her face. My laughter caused both kids to laugh until we were all lying in a heap on the floor laughing crazily.
Later that evening, before bed, the kids did a little unexpected role reversal. Usually Christian is a wild child who never stops moving. Jumping, climbing, playing and screeching. While Victoria is calmer and usually very interested in reading books and quiet pursuits. Not last night. I picked up Christian and had Victoria pick books for us and I sat with him on my lap and read stories. Two whole books! He was attentive and curious, calmly letting me read while interacting with the pages himself. Meanwhile, Victoria was bouncing around the room like she was made of rubber! She jumped off every surface she could find and chattered nonstop the entire time. It was so very strange of them.
After I finished reading to Christian, he took the first book (about tractors) and Sat on the couch and read it to me! He turned every page and talked to me on each one (in his squeaky little voice I wish you could hear) like he was really reading. It was so damn cute!
See?
And meanwhile, here's his crazy sister:
You'll notice she's a blur. She would not stop moving for even a second.
But a few minutes after story time ended (she was winded and needed a "rest" she told me)
I managed to get them both.
Isn't that cute? (Kelly will certainly think so)
And that's the story of my evening with V and C. They're too darling for words and I sure did enjoy playing with them! I can't wait to see them tonight at the birthday party!

The Longest Week
In what might be the longest week of my 30 years, I haven't blogged. Here's the recap:
Monday: Rescued my nephew for the day. Hijacked Kelly's family picture day. Took the three kids for pictures, rides, lunch, swimming in the backyard.
Tuesday: Had a girl's day with mom and Kelly. Ate dinner at The Blue Door. Went to the Twins game. Interleague play. Vs. the Pirates. Crushed them 8-2. Hung with Jan and Marie (also at game)....they're awesomely fun.
Wednesday: Went in to work early for a meeting. Had family drama.
Thursday: Had a loooong but extremely fun day of shopping with mom. We went to the Mall of America because she needed new work shoes (at Skechers). I needed nothing. Came home with two pairs of shoes, makeup, a christmas ornament, and new perfume. Fun. Super Fun.
Friday: Worked then home. Em and Chad came to visit. Found out that my aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer this week and is having surgery next week. Mom and Dad are heading to Alabama to be with her. Please keep her and my family in your thoughts and prayers.
Saturday: Picked up Simon and went with him, Mom and Dad, and brother-in-law, Chad, out to the State Fairgrounds to the "Back to the 50s" car show. It was fun. Developed a charley horse that has yet to go away. Less fun. Later, went to Elena's house for her father's memorial service. We drank and toasted his life. It was a fitting memorial.
Sunday: Father's Day. Belated wishes to all the wonderful fathers I know. (you know who you are!). Especially my own father.(I bought him the Ultimate John Wayne video collection--he loved it!). And my cell phone is broken. Dammit!
Monday: Watched Simon during the day. We went to story time at the library. We toured a school bus. Went to the mall and rode the carousel. Visited Pa at work. We were headed to the park when his mom called, she came early to pick him up. So now I owe him a trip to the park. And I'm at work again. Meeting Justin in amatter of minutes. (Hopefully....not having a cellphone sucks!)
With any luck, life will slow down this week. Tomorrow I will go see if my guy can get me a new phone...stay tuned.

Babies, Birthdays, Books, and Bears (the Teddy variety)
Weekend recap? Yeah, not a total recap, because that would take ages and I'm still exhausted from all the activity.
Let's start with Friday. Met Emily and Chad at the bar for cocktails. Celebrated with my sister as she turned 26 (at midnight). Also my friend Anna was there. She's the one who shares Emily's birthday, so I got to wish her a happy 22nd.
Here's the birthday girls together:
On Saturday it was off to Emmy and Chad's new house for her birthday party. The weather cooperated (it was about 75 and sunny) so we got to play yard games and eat my mother's delicious food.
First we have my brother-in-law, Chad (in navy), playing Giant Ladderball with his brother, Ryan (in orange). The next picture is my sister (in blue), her father-in-law, Zane (in salmon), her brother-in-law, Ryan (in orange) and my mother (in purple in the corner) watching a heated game of Bags.
Here we have my parents simultaneously throwing in a game of Bags (which you're not supposed to do).
Sunday was Kimmy's birthday. They golfed during the day, but then came to the house, where we were playing outdoors (beautiful day, again!) with my nephew Simon. After the runt went to bed, we convened for a family game (or two) of Cranium. Then we moved on to the music trivia game I invented. It was a fun night, but I didn't take any pictures.
Monday, I had set up a playdate between my nephew and my friend Kelly's daughter, Victoria. Along with my mom, my sister, my brother-in-law, and eventually my brother (Simon's dad) we went down to Teddy Bear Park.
That's a cute picture of the whole family at the park. My brother hadn't arrived yet, so that's why he isn't in it.
There's the two kids playing in the sand together. Simon, who doesn't talk much, said Victoria was "cute". He also calls her Tori, which is adorable (and all he can pronounce). At the end of the day, Victoria told her mommy that her favorite part of the day was "Simon because he was wearing an orange shirt." Simon, on the other hand, said his favorite part was the slides.
Boys- go figure.
After the park, the whole group walked down to the river and checked out the riverboats. Then we strolled into downtown and had lunch at the brand new Dairy Queen that just opened. The kids ate like we'd been starving them for a week. It was pretty funny.
Before we left, Kel got a picture of me with my buddy Victoria.
She's already planning our next playdate, so watch for pictures as we take the kids to Chuck-E-Cheese in early June.
After getting the kids home for naps, I had some time to myself for the remainder of the weekend. True to form, I chose to spend it reading a book. Normally I don't talk about the books I read very often, however, I have no choice.
A couple of weeks ago, my boss handed me a book and said my life wasn't complete until I had read it. It is called "My Most Excellent Year" by Steve Kluger (click on the link and you can "Look Inside" at Amazon and read the first few pages). I checked it out and it's been riding shotgun in my car ever since. I recently got a message that its due back this week so I pulled it out and decided to give it a chance. (The summary on the back is terrible, after reading it, I had very little interest in the book.) I am so glad that I trusted the recommendation and read it anyway. I read the rest of the book straight through without stopping. It is one of the best books I have ever read. It is marketed as Teen Fiction and I can see why since all the main characters are in high school, but it soooo doesn't matter. I can't think of anyone who wouldn't find something to like in this book. I laughed out loud while reading it, I cried at different parts, I learned things I didn't know, there is simply no end of good that I can say about this book. If you're looking for something to read--try this. It's awesome. My boss was right; I NEEDED to read that book.
That's pretty much it for the weekend. I am back to work today (MAN it was nice to have a weekend off!) and starting summer hours at Hamline, which means it's a whole lot slower in the library. Ah, well; I get a lot of reading done.
Before we go, a couple promised pictures of new baby Jaysa.
My girl, Sony, with Jaysa, right after she was born.
Then, Jason, the daddy, holding the baby while big brother Dylan hugs his little sister.
Here we have a shot of her close up. She's pretty for a newborn.
Then, finally, we have a full length shot of her stylin' in her little girl clothes.
Okay, I really think that covers everything. Pictures, pictures, pictures, interspersed with a few stories. I'm too tired to be witty...so I'll just stop.

I Guess It's On...?
So with regard to my last post (see below) my friend Kelly sent me this picture of her daughter, from her third birthday party.
She is nominating it as one of the cute kid pictures of the year.
I have to agree, it is a darn cute picture. What is it about kids in hats? (please, don't send me ONLY kids in hats pictures or I'll pick something else to be contrary).
So, I guess this means there is a contest.
Here's the rules:
Photo must be taken this year.
Photo must be sent to me to be posted here on my blog.
Photos do not have to be of children but must contain people (no pets, flowers, etc).
I'll take entries to the end of 2009.
You may send in photos from the beginning of the year for retroactive nominations.
Any photos sent to me are eligible for the contest.
I will decide the winner(s).
Let the games begin!
(It's any excuse to have a contest, really. I love this stuff!)
