A pretty vegetable!

There's a local farmers market here on Saturday morning - which is slow catching on, because there were only 2 farmers there this morning, but it was still early - but I bought some Zephyr squash, pictured above. The lady said they taste better than regular yellow squash, but I haven't cooked them yet. The other farmer had purple bell peppers but I didn't buy them because they were small and $1 each. The squash were $2/lb.

I had never seen or heard of these before. Has anyone else?

Please don't die on me plants!

Today I am planting our garden with my dad. I don’t mind gardening, in fact I enjoy it to a certain extent, but I have a tendency to kill plants. Most of my horticultural endeavors have not turned out well. I like the work though: the planting, the weeding, the picking, and the cleaning. It keeps me busy for most of the summer if I am attentive.

We are also going to be planting two cherry trees, two apple trees, and an Asian pear tree soon, too. We planted two peach trees and a cherry tree last year, but the deer destroyed our cherry tree. We also have three full grown apple trees, but one is almost entirely dead and another is starting to die so we need to replace them. One apple tree will be the same as what we already grow (Haralson), which was planted by my grandfather. The other is going to be a dwarf 4-in-1 tree. The only apples I eat fresh are the ones from my backyard so planting these trees is of particular importance to me.

I also need to weed the strawberry patch and transplant a cottonwood today. When I was younger I avoided helping in the garden as much as possible. I hated the bugs and the heat. Now, I think my father is growing tired of my ambitious plans for the yard. I want to start a raspberry patch and plant a hazelnut tree, but those may have to wait another year.

I think part of my love for gardening is I like being at home and being self sufficient to a certain extent. We grind our own flour, bake our own bread, and basically live off our garden during the late summer. I like knowing that my hands helped produce what I eat. Eating is more of a celebration for me when I have watched the plants grow and picked it with my own hands. I have the same feeling towards cooking my own food.

Later tonight I am going fishing. Hopefully I finally catch something (fishing is another thing I don’t have a great record with). If nothing else it will be nice to sit by the water and practice my casting.

Dawn's hamburger veg. crockpot soup

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 (1 lb.) package mixed frozen vegetables (carrots, beans, corn, and peas)
  • 3 ribs celery, chopped, including tops
  • 1 can stewed tomatoes
  • 1 can diced tomatoes ( or dice up 3 large tomatoes)
  • 1 envelope dry onion soup mix
  • 1 sm. can mushroom pcs
  • 1/4 c. barley
  • 1/2 t. freshly ground pepper
  • 2 T. fresh oregano, chopped (or 1/2 t. dried oregano)
  • 2 T. fresh basil, chopped (or 1/2 t. dried basil)
  • 2 sprigs fresh thyme (or 1/2 t. dried thyme)
  • 1/2 t. paprika
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 1 T. seasoned salt
  • 1 T. soy sauce
  • 1/2 c. fresh, chopped parsley (or 2 T. dried parsley)
  • 4 small red potatoes, skin on
  • dash Salt

PREPARATION:

Brown the ground beef in a frying pan; drain off the fat. You can reduce fat content even further by placing the beef in a colander and running hot water over it. Put the beef and all ingredients into the crockpot. You can eliminate the potatoes and make pasta-like elbow macoroni instead. Just don't put the cooked pasta in til ready to serve

VEGGIES, FROGS AND OTHER THINGS - PICS
Have you been missing the veggie pictures?  Well, yesterday was a great picking day.  The garden this year was better than ever.  Can't wait for next years!

Cleaned jalepenos yesterday and are drying as we speak.  Today should be pesto day ... put it off long enough.  We'll see how it goes.

Starting off with a little veggie art by Dave .... Smiley

Veggies, veggies and more veggies .....

Little frog living in the garden .... he / she is a cutie, no?

Actually made it to the house last night.  I finally saw the one girl I had not seen since I left and she was the one girl I was closest too.

When I walked in the door she was sitting at the dining room table with her back to me .... I said "hello?" ..... everyone was at the table .... she turned around saw me, screamed "JULIE!!!", came running and about knocked me over.  She hung on to me and sobbed for a good five minutes.  I did my best not to cry, the other girls stood back and smiled, knowing that this reunion was a long time coming.

Not much was accomplished last night .... my mind overwhelmed with such a greeting.  I was there for an hour and a half and thinking boss lady was just a bit bothered by the lack of actual crafting.  Next week (if there is a next week) will hopefully be more productive.

Hope everyone is enjoying their Thursday .... heading to claim sometime tomorrow.

Peace.  J.
