Us Open @ MindSay
That's right, I have the last minute fidgets. There was a day when I traveled a great deal. I was single and carefree and money was not an issue. Sheesh ... but that was another lifetime.
Today, I am a mom. As phsbum and I prepare to leave town for a few days, I'm trying to remember to DO everything ... It occured to me yesterday that I had not made plans on how we were getting to the airport. duh! Well ... we live a good hour from there in good traffic, and with the Open in town ... well ... So I made reservations yesterday at a park n ride place near the airport. They guarantee free ride to the airport terminal of my choice. I have only been to our newer airport twice and that was for real estate meetings. I'm so lost! OY!
Back at the ranch, I made sure my son (who will be managing the estate while we're away) has plenty of cat food, dog food, and young man food, made out bills that must be mailed ... actually, I'll take these with me, I think!
We will pack Weds night, rise about 4 am to be on the road by 6. I have no idea what to expect for traffic and I'd rather get to the airport and sit there than sit in traffic while watching my watch! What am I forgetting??? Let's see ... sunscreen, shorts, tanks, unmentionables, toothbrush ...
It's been more than 20 years since we have had a holiday away ... for more than one night. I'm so looking forward to seeing my dearest friends ... and relaxing!

It has begun! The US Open has come to town. My header pic is the 9th hole of Oakmont Country CLub, the site of this years US Open, and I live less than 1 mile from the site, but if I try to drive anywhere ... ANYWHERE, I will sit for great lengths of time in my car going no place. There simply is not enough room to contain the influx of humanity (and vehicles) that come along with such an event! MERCY!!!
The building and fussing began in March with traffic steadily climbing both in numbers and in stupidity. The town is an older quaint little one set along the Allegheny River about 20 minutes northeast of the city of Pittsburgh. The tree-lined streets are mostly brick and narrow, with cars always parked on both sides. The thing is ... we have 3 rivers and hundreds of bridges, but there are THOUSANDS of people, press, cars, busses, trucks and GAWKERS, all hoping for a glimpse of Tiger n Company. Then there's those of us who live here ... work here ... and now, sit in traffic here (with the cost of fuel still at $3.00 gal).
Golf has never been one of those "games" - "sports" that I cared much for ... I tried! I even took it in school ... the first time around. I like minature golf, but I don't get the fascination ... purses with plenty of zeros ... and the hype! It certainly is a "rich" sport. That is obvious by the lovely vehicles jamming the streets.
Economically, it will be great for Oakmont, but I technically live in Plum, a neighbor, and Plum will gain virtually nothing but headaches from the event since what little business district Plum has is no where near the Open.
So ... I propose that the next time OCC wants to bring the Open to town, it should be a referendum for us to vote upon! I say ... Bah humbug! (which is why phsbum and I are headed for Charleston, SC on Thursday morning!)
Just about everyone has stood on the side of the road as cars fly by at 60 or 70 mph right?
But how many of us have ever had something coming at us at 135 mph?
In the second round of the men's singles at the US Open Tennis Competition today Andy Roddick was serving to opponent Kristian Pless at 135 mph.
How fast is too fast?
What is the fastest ball you think an average person could react to? (Let alone return.)
Remember: F=M x V
Went to school this morning. Had a report due that I hadn't done, so I went to the library and did it before handing it in.
Earlier in the morning though, I had a blood test and grabbed some breakfast on my way over. It was good.
Went out for lunch, and now I'm home :)
Catching up on the news (tennis and otherwise). Sad to hear about both the tragedy of Steve Irwin and Andre Agassi's painful last pro match/appearance at a major (defeated by Becker in the 3rd round of the US Open). You could just feel the pain he was going through, the look on his face. He wasn't moving the courts like he used to; though certainly moving the crowd. He was in so much physical and emotional pain that he was in tears towards the end. You can't help but feel sorry for the guy -- he was an absolute legend. To have a chronic back problem and need cortisone and various other drug injections just to be able to play and in such the state he was in, was incredibly admirable. He eventually bowed and saluted the crowd and received a deserving standing ovation from the many thousands there watching him at the Ashe (Arthur Ashe Stadium).
Both were of yesterday's news, so yesterday was not a very good day. Today was not so much quite as bad, but Mauresmo got through with a victory over Williams. I did not want her to get through :(
QF showdowns amongst the men and women former world No.1s; Lleyton vs. Andy and Lindsay vs. Justine. Should be interesting to see who gets through, as they are all top players.
Yeah anyways, I'll be watching it tonight and tomorrow.
Not a lot has been happening much. Staying home, relaxing. Trying to get a bit of studying and assessment done too.
