Voice-to-Voice Device Provides Successful Combat Language Translation Capability

The Voice Response Translator (VRT) has provided important voice-to-voice language translation capabilities for US military personnel engaged in direct action combat operations, according to reports provided by military personnel. The 11-ounce VRT was developed over the past 12 years with National Institute of Justice and Defense Department funding and is the only eyes-free, hands-free voice-to-voice translator in existence.  This unique capability enables users to maintain weapon readiness and situational awareness while providing instructions, information and asking short questions of foreign nationals in hostile and potentially hostile situations.

Voice Response Translators “contributed immeasurably to the success of more than twenty direct action raids in Iraq in support of national level objectives,” according an after-action report by a Ranger Captain.  “In addition to sparing precious time on the objective, they reduced collateral damage by bridging a tremendous language barrier therein resulting in the detention of more than fifteen members of the local insurgent network. The VRT proved invaluable in multiple roles as not only a tactical questioning tool but also as a force protection multiplier used both on objectives and from blocking positions.”

Users speak short commands into the VRT, and translated instructions and questions are produced by it. The system has been deployed with US Army, Special Forces, Marines, Coast Guard, and Navy personnel. The current version translates limited spoken Iraqi responses into English as part of advanced research funded by the Defense Advance Research Projects Agency (DARPA).

The VRT is highly miniaturized (it fits in a standard M4 single ammo pouch) and can be integrated fully with MICH tactical headsets without interfering with communications or fast roping operations.

The system is produced by IWT, Inc. and Laguna Industries, Inc.  IWT, Inc., a Fremont, CA-based company, specializes in the development and production of miniaturized speech recognition devices that work in high noise environments.  IWT was founded in 1992 by Silicon Valley pioneer John H. Hall, who developed the first successful electronic watch, the first computerized heart pacemaker, the first radiation-hardened computer and other civilian and defense electronics systems. Military Writers adds first three

Military-Writers.com, a website listing current, former and active United States Military personnel who have authored books, added its first three military writers: Richard Huffman, Chuck Chambers and Raymond Foster.

Richard Neal Huffman was born the son of a sharecropper. At the age of two his parents migrated to southwest Michigan.  At 20, Richard was drafted into the United States Army where he served as a medic.  He completed a tour of duty in the Panama Canal Zone where he was assigned as an ambulance driver for the 601st Medical Detachment of the United States Southern Command.  In the regular Army, Richard was an E-4.  After discharge, he joined the Michigan Army National Guard and later the Army Reserves.  In the guard he was both a medic and tank crewmen.  Richard joined the Bangor Police Department and throughout his career he would serve as a patrol officer, training officer, sergeant, detective and assistant chief of police.  Richard’s first book, “Dreams in Blue: The Real Police,” is an autobiographical journey that takes the reader inside the world of the small town cop. He introduces the reader to people, situations, and a culture that is both interesting and unique. Richard’s second book, “Rubal,” is a fictional account of a Union soldier during the Civil War.

A former police officer for the city of Palmetto (Florida), Chuck Chambers is the Chief investigator and owner of Chambers Investigations.  In 1965, Chuck Chambers joined the United States Marine Corps and held a position in the Anti Tank Battalion.   In his book, The Private Investigator Handbook: The Do-It-Yourself Guide to Protect Yourself, Get Justice, or Get Even, he shares his insider expertise, with true case histories from his files, tricks of the trade, and step-by-step advice to help readers be able to:  Catch a cheating spouse; Uncover hidden assets, monetary malfeasance, and fraud; Tail and track a mark; Use the Internet to get information on anything and anyone; Protect one's privacy; Prepare an intelligence file on anyone-on and off line; and, Find and preserve legal evidence.

Raymond E. Foster retired at the rank of lieutenant from the Los Angeles Police Department after 24 years of service.  He served in the United States Coast Guard as a radioman from 1976 to 1982.  He has a BA in criminal justice, masters in public administration and is currently working on his PhD.  Raymond’s first book, Police Technology, has been adopted by over 100 colleges and universities.  His second book, Leadership: Texas Hold ‘em Style, is schedule to be published next year.  His current writing projects include an introduction to policing text book and a book on marketing.

In addition to hosting current, former and retired military personnel who have written books, Military-Writers.com is building and extensive web-based directory of military personnel who own businesses.

THE ISRAEL ENIGMA

"What explains most of the world's dislike of Israel?"

I have often wondered this question as well.

"Even if you forget that a series of offensive wars to destroy Israel in part originated from Palestine, or that Israel has given up land acquired by war in its perennial hope for "land for peace," what is so unique about the West Bank that drowns out all other crises over contested ground (from islands like Cyprus and the Falklands to entire countries like Tibet)? Why has tiny Israel alone earned more U.N. resolutions of condemnation than all those offered against all other nations of the world combined?"

I remember when I was an undergrad, the venom and animus that was directed at the Israeli government in protests and demonstrations by unthinking students and professors who selectively champion the Palestinian cause, of which they know little about, for holy land in a legitimate struggle between peoples of two religions yet nary a word was ever spoken or shouted about the equally contentious issue of Kashmir between the Pakistanis and India, a chunk of land much less holy than the West Bank?

Could it be that the criticism of Israel has little to do with the West Bank, Palestine and religion and everything to do with the fact that a darker skinned people (Palestinians) are in conflict with a lighter skinned people (Israelis) whereas the equally brown Pakistanis and Indians fall outside the racialist dynamic this conflict has become and therefore outside the narrative so many who believe in a racialist worldview cannot comprehend and conveniently ignore? I think so too.

Take it one step further and you have naked at the core the fundamental reason so many who marched and protested three and a half years ago against the coming U.S. war with Saddam, and have vehemently opposed operation Iraqi Freedom all along. And still do. And always will. International ANSWER, college faculties and sadly, too many in the Democratic party will never support our effort in the war on terror, whether George W. is president or not, not because they fear losing. Oh no, they fear us winning. Winning in Iraq, like the Israelis standing their ground to the Palestinians disrupts their narrative and if Iraq is able to stabilize itself and govern itself as a united nation, aided and abetted by the 82nd Airborne and predicated upon "Shock and Awe" then not only is the big bad U.S. military the good guys who liberated an entire people, but the dynamic, pedaled since the 1960's that we (still) live in a racist and oppressive society, with the pale faces the true evildoers ceases to have any meaning and the squalor that the Palestinians live in becomes their own doing. And their own failure.  Read on . . .
