Former Secretary of State for the George W Administration gave a speech at a business forum in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). I suspect the reason Powell is no longer with the Administration is his disagreement on how to handle the War on Terror.
First of all, what in God’s name is Powell doing in the UAE? The UAE is not exactly a beacon of democracy. Indeed the UAE is actually ruled by the hereditary Emir of Abu Dubai.
Let me jog your memories. The Emir is the direct owner of DPW. DPW is the company that almost had U.S. approval to operate Commercial Ports on the Eastern Seaboard.
The State Department describes the UAE as a vital partner in the fight against terrorism. But the UAE, a loose federation of seven emirates on the Saudi peninsula, was an important operational and financial base for the hijackers who carried out the attacks against the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the FBI concluded. (WashingtonPost.com)
The DPW deal was taken off the table. Although the government is officially an ally on the War on Terror, its citizens have blocks of sympathy for Islamofascist terrorists.
Spin your wheels to the present and Colin Powell is telling an Arab audience that President Bush needs to do a better job in reaching out to Arabs and Mohammedans. Powell is actually concerned we are giving a bad message to the Arab and Mohammedan world by not stroking them as the Appeasement minded Europeans do.
Come on Powell! I think Americans need to think more of the impression the Arab and Mohammedan world is giving Americans. Can we say multiple acts of Terrorism that stretches from hijackings to 9/11. Then there is the rabble rousing by the Mullahs and Clerics that teach there people to hate America as the great Satan. That is what President Bush needs to be mindful of.
These days there is much happening in our world to provide us all with Food For Thought.
The other day I was building up a profile for my photography site at Flickr, I've been working on that site a while, my excuse for not posting much here of late. The words were running through my head this morning while watching the news and it reminded me too how photography helps break down some of those odd barriers that can come between people...
(Sometimes it seems my camera has a softer view of the world than I... and that's a very good thing, my photography is assisting me in keeping some things in perspective.)
Part of what I wrote seems to be jumping out at me today, following all the news that has bombarded us of late, (last two weeks) and today the potential for civil war errupting in Iraq (today's mosque bombing) along with the potential for something similar brewing in the US - in response to the UAE purchase of a company that owns and operates ports in the US. (Hey you in the US - did you know Arab countries are also heavily invested in Citibank? I've seen the advertisements on CNN - this is for real!)
My words on that profile touched me today while watching the news;
"Our Intent; is to highlight our adventures and the opportunities we've had to enjoy, explore, capture and display, the enchantment we see in the world around us. We believe this fair earth; Our Enchanted Garden; is a magical place to be celebrated!
People, places and moments in time, whimsy and wisdom and nature divine.
We wish to share our excitement about the world we experience with the hope others may know at least a faint glimpse of our joy!
In a world that often appears wrought with pain and fear we believe there is a beautiful dance unfolding; a dance of humanity and nature learning to BE, co-operatively."
It even got me thinking about the real meaning of the word, so I looked it up on-line and got;
The meaning of the word Humanity ; as described in the Wiki-tionary
Humanity
- human beings as a group
- the human condition
- the quality of being benevolent
So we human beings, as a group, dancing in this drama we call our lives, share real questions both about our human condition and the issue of humans practising benevolence... I'm so confident in the natural world that I can say I still feel a sense of joy when I consider the world around me, even in this light. Even with the potential for war looming in our faces.
In fact, as birth is one of the most difficult things that a human being experiences - regardless of whether we "remember" the experience or not - I believe it's possible we are entering a new stage of human experience and possibly the "birthing" of a new human. This time though this birth is without the birth canal trip - this time it's happening while we are right here, right now. And it doesn't appear to be any easier or "neater" than the traditional birth process - but we'll remember this one - that's for sure!
Can we be on the very brink of the birth of humans, a new humanity, who see the connectedness of all things and the necessity to play well together and to treat each and every other living essence with respect and compassion?
Let me preface this entry by saying that over the last several years, I have spent a lot of time defending President Bush for many things that he has said and done. I would do it again. On this issue, though, I simply cannot support his decision...
The current administration is very near to allowing a new company to take control of six major American seaports... not that big a deal normally, but this time it's different. You see, this company is based in the United Arab Emerites (UAE), a nation with proven ties to Al Qaeda and other terrorist groups. It is a commonly known fact that our seaports are our most vulnerable points of entry into the nation, and we're looking to practically open up the doors to terrorists! The administration holds fast that our relations with the UAE government are good and that they are a vital partner in the war on terror. I don't deny that. But just because we have good relations with their government doesn't mean that others in the nation aren't interested in doing us harm. I'm not sure if the company is government controlled or not, I believe it is not, but even if it is, it would be ridiculous to think that just because relations with the government are good, every person working for that government and that company is safe. Personally, I find this completely ridiculous. Our government spends so much time and money fighting terrorism in other parts of the world, but practically invites that activity into our own nation. I don't get it. Most members of Congress (Republicans and Democrats) and the Republican Governers who have these seaports on their land agree. What do you guys think? Am I completely missing something here?
