I have 16 turtles in my bathtub!
And really I don't mind that. Except it would have been nice if someone told me BEFORE I went to take a shower. Nothin's quite like steppin into a tub-o-turtles. Someone's been shooting BBs at the turtles in the marina. Every day, the youth group round up the daily casualties and bring them back. I've actually had varius turns of turtles in the tub for the last few weeks, since its started. But usually I put them there, so I know about it.

Tomorrow the vet comes again to do cosmetic shell mainenence and BB removal. It will be nice to have use of my own shower again!

Egg and Turtle Report
OUR ROBIN EGG...

Though it feels substantially heavier than it seemed when first found, when candled, the dark spot (I presume to be our baby bird) does not seem to be getting larger or taking on any definitive form, as best I can tell. According to my research, hatching should follow a successful incubation period of about 14-15 days. Today would be day 10. I find it difficult to believe the small, flat, dark blob will develop into a baby bird in just 4-5 more days, but we’ll give it a go, just for conscience’s sake. If it hasn’t hatched (or the blob hasn’t changed) by next Sunday (which would be day 18), we will have an appropriate funeral for our little friend – a tiny bundle of living energy, not quite ready yet to take on mortal form – whom we may yet see again in some other form someday.

OUR PAINTED TURTLE...

As for Elliot’s Mother’s Day gift, apparently it was only intended to be a gift for a day. Once our painted turtle discovered the water in the pond, he dove in like an Olympic competitor and we haven’t seen him since. Sunday evening, my attempts to arrange him a way out of the water, and his vigorous exploration of it, stirred up so much debris, my pond looked more like a mud hole than a pond…there was no seeing ANYthing in that water. By the time the floating debris had settled and visibility had returned to the pond, there was no sign of our turtle, either in the water or the yard, and hasn’t been since. I’m guessing we had everything for his comfort except a sexy girl turtle. I had actually planned on taking him to the creek, if it came about that he didn’t seem content in the backyard…I suppose he took it upon himself to see that through. I was SOOOOO looking forward to having my very own slug control in the backyard this summer…I guess it’s back to the saucers of beer strategically placed around the pond. I wonder if the ants, birds and other living things that frequent the pond area get drunk too. That’s right, it’s just one big PARTY in my backyard. Come one, come all, let’s eat, drink, smoke and be merry, for morning glory season will soon be upon us!

An unusual Mother's Day Gift
So, what do you think an outside dog might give his "mom" (human, of course) for Mother's Day?

Elliot, being the thoughtful companion that he is, and familiar with my obsession with critters, went out in search of, what else, another CRITTER for me! And look what he found...

A LOVELY Eastern Painted turtle!!!!

Not understanding Elliot's intimidating barking was merely his way of announcing the arrival of his thoughtful gift to me for this special occasion, we rescued the turtle from his distress and placed him amidst the plants by the pond in our backyard, where it seems he has become quite comfortable and content. Kendall took him an offering of fruit. We have now set out to construct for him, a safe and easy access to the pond, where he may swim, bask and hide in the lush ivy with Thumper. I'm not sure what Thumper thinks of his new companion...thus far he has shown only a moderate interest in him, though they are resting comfortably together in the plants around the pond. Perhaps later this summer, we can have a hare and turtle race...
