Humanities paper from hell + other stuff

Kitsune no Tora is feeling: As of Monday: Frustrated, overwelmed, tired
Today: Relieved, freed

The past week and the beginning of this one was just TERRIBLE and STRESSFUL.

I absolutely despise the paper assigned to us by my Humanities paper. It's so out of my element. :/ We had to take some piece of art/architecture from the metropolitan Detroit area and write a research paper.

I wasn't completely clear on what we were supposed to DO, and that's just so broad of a subject that I was just at a loss for what to do. I ended up putting it off, and, the day it was due, I had nothing.

Since the paper was a third of our grade, I had to come up with SOMETHING, no matter how terrible, because otherwise I would fail the class. Which would be a very very bad idea. D: I ended up deciding on Thursday night (it was due that afternoon) to do my school, since the architecture is pretty cool and I figured the information would be simple to get, I did have the library of the same college to root through.

Boy was I wrong. It was IMPOSSIBLE to find anything on the buildings themselves. I couldn't even find the damn architects. DX The only name that came up was Perkins and Will, but when I searched it nothing for the school came up. :/ And there were absolutely no records available to me on campus.

I ended up scrambling and bullshitting my way through the entire paper, and STILL ended up a page short. :/ There wasn't much I could do, though, so hopefully I'll get at least a C on it. Any lower than that and I get a C for the class, which isn't good at all. D:

Trigonometry has also been kicking my ass. I really hope I did decently on my final today, although I'm not confident at all. The entire second section was just one big train wreck. DX Edit: I just got my grade from my teacher. I completely BOMBED it, like I thought I did. I got an F, leaving me with a C in the class. DDDX Damn it, that just totally toasted my grade point average. DX

But, there is ONE good thing about today: I AM FREEEEEEEEE~ <3 Until September, anyway.
I only get like, a half of summer. ;_; I'm never taking summer classes again. D: It was just baaaaaaaad.

Just for the hell of it, I did that rate my life thing.

Quite honestly I'm not very surprised.

On another note, I finally get to spend time working on the collab. :3 Raven has already started, and it has been my turn for a while now, but I've just been so busy and stressed that I couldn't get myself to work on it.

But Raven seriously needs some help, though. He really rushed it the first time he wrote his section, it sounded more like a summary than anything else. So I told him to flesh it out, and he explained that he was trying to cut down on unnecessary babble and just get on with the story. I told him that there was a fine line between too much information and not enough, and that he crosssed the line a little bit, and he agreed to work on it.

The problem is, now he's adding unnecessary details. He definitely needed more detail, but not the kind he's adding. :/ It's just BORING. I told him to include what his character sees and experiences, but he's not good at that, apparently.

The only reason I'm really bugging him about it is that I know that there are some of us who use a lot of detail when writing (myself included). We have to be able to shape this into a cohesive style, something we missed out on last time, which caused it to suffer.

Taylor and I have our work cut out for us as betas. ^^;;; We have a lot of new people who are pretty young, and we have no idea on their writing skill. I expect to be rearranging sentences so that it flows better a lot; I've already run into that with Raven. Taylor and I have decided that she would go through it first, fixing minor things like spelling and grammar, and anything awkward that she decides is bad enough to merit changing. Since I have more guts to tear things apart, I'll go through it and fix the flow and try and mesh the style into something more singular.

It will still be their writing, I'm not going to completely tear it apart or anything, I'm just going to FIX it, like I would as anyone else's beta.

So yeah. :3

I came up with a oneshot idea a couple of days back. But I had a little tiny plot hole, so I had been brainstorming ways to fix it. Fortunately, Sunday night as I was going to sleep I figured it out completely. Satisfied, I went to sleep.

I really wish I had thought to WRITE IT DOWN, because I had completely forgotten what I had planned by Monday afternoon, when I finally had time to work on it. :/

That night I sat down and tried to rack my brain for the information, but it didn't come. I managed to piece together another way to fix it, although not as good as the first time, but then the unthinkable happened.

My MS Word subscription ran out. None of my documents in docx format work. I can open them, but they're read only. I can't even copy and paste. WHAT. THE. FUCK. AT LEAST LET ME COPY AND PASTE IT INTO WORDPAD, IT'S MY FREAKING WORK!!

Of course, I still had to finish my Humanities paper that night, so after a few moments of freaking out I decided to try saving it on my flashdrive and work on it on the desktop. Thankfully that worked, so I finished my paper. I didn't want to deal with my oneshot after that, so it has sat locked on my laptop since then.

What a piece of shit. Now I have to download my sister's MS Office so that I can do anything beyond read my documents.

I could technically just retype everything, but there's NO WAY I'm doing that, that would take too long. Of course, by now I have forgotten my new way of fixing my plot hole, so I have to sit and think about it again. I haven't been able to concentrate on it as of late, though. Most of the thunder of the idea is gone. :/

But it's SUMMER, so I should have plenty of time to get back into the idea again. XD

Still on the topic of fanfiction, The Village Square's monthly contest is still plugging along. I haven't entered since January, with my fanfic All I Deserve (the theme was Opposites). But this month (er, last month), I manged to get inspired by the theme Secrets, and wrote a funny little oneshot called Dirty Little Pleasure.

The title is a little misleading, since it's only T in rating because of very mild language, but whatever. XD It fits, I think. Surprisingly, it's a crossdressing fic. I just got so amused by the idea of Jake from Rune Factory 2 (the most angry character in the game) dressed up as a french maid that I couldn't help myself. XDDD I BLAME KINGDOM HEARTS FANFICTION XPPP

Voting started last night at midnight, and I put in my votes a couple hours ago at my grandma's. It was sooooo hard to pick. I managed to narrow it down to 7, but after that it got real painful. DX

I really don't think I'll win, because the contest focuses on Harvest Moon more than Rune Factory, and my fic is something only a select few will like and probably vote for. I think that's the reason why the last time I entered I only got 1 vote - then again, I was probably lucky that I got one, because there were so many entries that some people didn't get any votes at all. There's more votes allowed this time, but I have a feeling that quite a few are going to end up unloved. ^^;

Plus, I think my entry the last time was a lot better than this one. And there's so many other amazing entries, I really don't think I'll win. I will be pleasantly surprised if I even get a vote. XD

This weekend is the 4th of July~ I'm excited. Normally we go to my uncle's house on the lake and watch the fireworks over the water, but I think this time I'm going out with some friends Saturday to watch some somewhere in downtown Detroit. Should be fun; I don't head that way very often, and it has been a long time since I've seen some people.

I really want to hang out with Andrea, though, that's pretty much the only reason I'm going - she said I should. XD;

BUT I'M SUPER EXCITED ANYWAY. 8D

This is getting super duper long, so that'll be it for this update.

Goodnight, digital abyss.

Uwoooooh. Yeah. Didn't I say a few blogs back that I wouldn't leave this alone for so long again?

And it has been what, a month since I last touched this? ^^;;;

BAD LISA D8

So... updates, updates.... I had a blank blog just sitting here saved from back in mid-May, so I would assume that that blog was to talk about our new pets. My mom was really missing Jasper after he got squashed, so she had been looking around for shelters to get a new cat or a dog. After that was unsuccessful (the only shelter we could find was a good hour away by car) she turned to the paper. Somewhere around the 17th she found an ad for standard poodle puppies.

We ended up getting a black one, he was about 4 months at the time. His name is Barney, short for Bernard. I went with her to go get him. They were being bred by this little old lady, so they were largely unsocialized and very. VERY. stinky. AND NOT HOUSETRAINED. HE IS STILL NOT HOUSETRAINED. HE CANNOT COMPREHEND THAT THE HOUSE IS NOT A TOILET.

And poodles are supposed to be smart...

Anyway, when he got him, of course the news went straight to the forum. Taylor was uber excited, rofl. XD I asked them for name ideas, because none that we came up with we liked. Taylor insisted on Morgan Freeman (ROFLLL), and thus that became his forum name. I told my mom and sister and they looked at me strange and shot it down immediately. XD In the end it was my mom's decision to name him Barney. I hate it, but he is HER dog. I don't like him much anyway. He's stinky and slobbery and messy. And pees on the carpet. Ick. Amusingly, he's afraid of Pat, my mom's drunkard boyfriend. I guess maybe he had some bad experiences with grown men as a puppy? He's slightly scared of Joey, my brother, but not as much as Pat. And he's around  him more than he is any of us, sans Mom... W/e.

The next day after we got Barney, my mom saw another ad, this time for Ragdoll kittens. She has wanted one of THOSE for like, forever, ever since Jasper died. So of course she jumped on the ad. He was $400. FOUR. HUNDRED. DOLLARS. For a fuzzy little animal weighing a little over a pound. How fucking ridiculous is that? But my mom insisted on it, and my brother and sister really wanted him too. The three of us (my sister, brother and I) split most of it, and my mom paid for the rest and the cat littler/food. I didn't want to spend that much on an animal when we could get a perfectly good cat at some shelter for a quarter of that amount, but they eventually guilted me into it. Taylor helped their points too. :/ She freaked over the cat, rofl. XDD She kept telling me to get it, and I eventually just gave in and forked over my money. ;__;

I wanted to go when they went to get the cat, but my mom flat our refused to let me go and took my sister with her. That was sooooo annoying. I was the one that didn't want to get it, at least let me know that my money will be spent getting one that I want! I asked for one with a black nose and blue eyes, if they had one. BECAUSE THOSE ARE SO ADORABLE EEEE 8DD

Apparently all the ones with that coloring were scratchy and clingy. So the one they got is only one color, and one akin to what natural sugar looks like: Almost cream colored, but slightly brown. Kinda like khaki, but lighter. He's cute and all.

Of course, I mentioned this to the forum. Mima got all excited, and when I asked them all for name ideas, she came up with Fubacu. ROFL. Apparently it's short for "fuzzy ball of cute," and he is henceforth known as Fubacu on the forum.

Again, that was shot down immediately, no surprise there. My sister went on this cat names website to look for names, and discovered "Edward Scissorpaws." HOW FUCKING EPIC IS THAT. XDDD I demanded that be his name, but everyone refused. ;_; We were so bad at coming up with names that my mom just ended up calling him "Squirt," and it stuck. I don't mind it, and it does fit him, but I don't like it much.

He's cute and cuddly and soft, but he's such a BITCH when he's hyper. He attacks everything that moves, tries to demolish my skin (he likes to bite and scratch your hands when he's hyper) and my laptop cords, and gets into everything. DX I like him better than the dog, though, at least he has some good points. XDD

.....ROFLLLLLLL. I just looked up at the tags bar. One of the suggested tags are "fucking gay mom." HOW FUCKING HILARIOUS IS THAT? XDDDDD *is dying with laughter* And where did I mention anything being gay?

Umm... what else did I have to say....

School is a bitch... I have a big trig test I'm NOT READY FOR AT ALL tomorrow morning, and a paper due Thursday for Humanities that I have no idea at all how to even begin researching, which I was supposed to have started about a month ago. And it's 1/3 of my grade. Yeah.............. not good.

At least school will be out in two weeks. Stupid summer classes. Never doing that again. You have to cover and learn the same amount of material as a 15 week class in 7.5 weeks. NEVER AGAIN. TOO MUCH PRESSURE AND WORK FOR  THE SUMMER.

I need a new job though. Since I won't have any classes for the Summer II term, I lose my work-study job then. So I have two weeks to come up with a new job. There's the Burger King a few miles away, but I dunno if I want to work there... but I guess it's better than nothing. A lot of my friends have been having trouble getting jobs. Some didn't get any at all. I'm really worried. My car is out of gas and I'm losing my paycheck. DX

...Oh yeah, I got my car since the last time I posted. It was my uncle's, but he got a new one and said I could have his old one.

I spent the entire day after I got it cleaning it. It STANK SO BAD. UGH. Like old fast food and cigarettes. Now it smells like Febreze and Lysol, rofl. XD It's an old rusted out blue '97 Chevrolet Venture. IT COSTS SO MUCH FOR GAS, THE STUPID THING. I don't need a freaking minivan, I'm the only one in it 99% of the time. I just filled it up halfway about two weeks ago, and I only drive about a mile and a half to school and back maybe 6 times a week. AND IT'S ALMOST EMPTY AGAIN. Stupid thing. :P Gas is too expensive and I don't have a good enough paycheck for it.

But it's a car, and it runs (albeit probably not for very long, it has over 250,000 miles on it), so that's good enough for me, I guess. It still needs a name, though. I wonder what I should name it...

Uwoh, it's like almost 1:00 am. DX I need to study some and go to bed, I have class at 9:30. Further updates soon, hopefully? I know I had more to say, but I really don't remember what it was at the moment. XD;;

Goodnight, digital abyss.

     All men look at porn. They love it. I don't mean they love it like they love their family. I don't mean they love it like they love their dog. I don't even mean they love it like they love sex. They need it like they need to eat food, or get sleep, or take a good shit. It's not something they write on their to do list, but when they don't have it they sure as fuck will miss it. They love it like they love a good movie, or book, or t.v. show. They love it because its enjoyable and fun. Not fun and exciting like falling in love or fucking. Fun like a good movie, or book, or t.v. show. It's entertainment. Harmless entertainment. Should I watch Blade Runner or look for big titty black girls on the internet? Hmmm, decisions, decisions.

     All women hate porn. They especially hate the porn that men look at, which happens to be all porn. I don't mean they hate it like they hate death. I don't mean they hate it like they hate cruelty. I don't even mean they hate it like they hate poverty. I mean they hate it because men love it. Not only do men love it, but they love it alone. It's actually more enjoyable without a woman. Because woman don't hate porn all the time, afterall, they will watch it with men. They will watch and then fuck the shit out of the man, at least some women will. But all women hate porn. They hate it because men watch it by themselves. Not only do women not watch it by themselves but they can't begin to understand why a man would watch it by themselves when there is nobody to have sex with afterwards. What's the point? Well I don't know, what's the point of watching CSI or the Olympics?

     The difference in attitude that men and women have towards pornography leads to a catch me if you can scenario. The man says, I'm going to do this even though I know you won't like it. And the woman says, I have a pretty good hunch that you are doing it and I'm going to catch you. The man will look and the woman will watch. The man will be sneaky because he is aware of the woman watching. And the woman will be sneaky because she is aware of the man looking. The man will wait until she is at work or asleep. The woman will wait until he is at work or asleep. The man will search for "big ass booty dancing" on youtube and the woman will search the internet history for "big ass booty dancing." The man will google: "how to clear the internet history" and the woman will google: "how to track the internet history." Hmmm. It must be love.

First Test = 85
So Wednesday I took my first of six tests for this class, the first in my path to a Maths degree vice the History degree I'd been shooting for. I'm proud of two things... one, that I took the test a week early (after spending about five hours in the Math Lab vice the three hours I'm required to spend) and that my final recorded grade was an 85. I could have retaken the test for a higher grade but the highest I could have got on the retest was a 90... I'll just shoot for a 95 on my next test and that will average things out.

Now the part I'm not proud of. I felt decent going into the test... I'd been debating whether or not to just go ahead and take it Wednesday (the last day of the week that I could take the test in my home campus) or whether to drive up to Warwick or Providence (30 and 45 mikes away) on Friday or Saturday to take it then, or just to take it next week on schedule. See, I'm trying to make it at least two weeks (if not three) ahead of schedule so I can get one or two tests of PreCalc in before the summer term... otherwise, there is no way in hell I'll finish that class in the summer term. Again, I felt decent Wednesday afternoon, I didn't think I'd feel like driving anywhere Friday, and I wanted to get the test over with. So after reviewing for about 45 minutes, I plunged in. 20 questions. Nothing from the material I'd been seriously struggling with. Took me about an hour to finish it, but I'd felt pretty good about the test when I handed it in... until the proctor called me up and said that I'd scored a 55.

Lucky for me (and my melting brain, which is still trying to reprogram itself in line with the right triangle model) we get one chance to rework the problems we get wrong... hence the 85. Also hence the extremely humbling experience I had.

Okay, this is a really boring post, and I have to get back to my homework anyway.

Section 2.1 -- Trigonometric Functions of Acute Angles
Draw Quadrant I of the XY axes: that is, just draw the top-right portion of how you would normally draw your XY-axes graph. That way you only see the positive x, positive y parts.

Now, on the horizontal axis, going right, draw a line. Where you stop, call this point C. Now draw a vertical line straight up from here, calling this point B where you stop. From the origin (call it point A), draw a ray connecting to point C and going on.

We say the length of AC is x, the length of CB is y, and then the length of AB is r. B has coordinats (x,y).

Now, the side length y is called the side opposite of angle A. This makes sense because y is on the opposite side of A. The side x is called the side adjacent of angle A. This makes sense because the two are right next to each other. Note that for adjacents, you DO NOT LOOK AT THE HYPOTENUSE, r. NEVER. ONLY CONSIDER THE TWO "legs."

Now, from there, we can define our trig functions, which consists of a table you should commit to memory.

sinA = y/r = side opposite / hypotenuse
cosA = x/r = side adjacent / hypotenuse
tanA = y/x = side opposite / side adjacednt
cscA = r/y = hypotenuse / side opposite
secA = r/x = hypotenuse / side adjacent
cotA = x/y = side adjacent / side opposite

Keep that drawing. We'll be using it later on.

Our next table you should commit to memory consists of cofunctions. Cofunctions are complementary, in that the sum of the angles 90o. And it works like this--

sinA = cos(90o - A)
cosA = sin(90o - A)
cscA = sec(90o - A)
secA = csc(90o - A)
tanA = cot(90o - A)
cotA = tan(90o - A), for all A < 90o.

How do we gather this? Well, look at our triangle. More specifically, let's look at sinA = y/r.

Now, look at angle B. Look at ITS side adjacent, which is y. We can say cosB = y/r. What else = y/r?

sinA!! Thus, we can say sinA = cosB. Now, we know there is a 90o angle there called angle C based on our drawing. We know triangles have 180o. So, we can eliminate that 90o and get 180o - 90o = 90o.

Thus, A + B = 90o. Now, what say we subtract A from both sides? A - A + B = 90o - A, or B = 90o - A.

Look at that! We just saw how our cofunctions work together! In our table, instead of saying sinA = cosB, we simply replaced B with 90o - A to get sinA = cos(90o - A), and we did the SAME THING with every other function there. That's how cofunctions work!

Now, we need to simply analyze two particular types of triangles that come up VERY frequently (so why NOT give them special treatment?). They are dubbed the 30-60 triangle and the 45-45 triangle. We'll start with the 45-45 triangle.

The 45-45 triangle is simply an isosceles triangle with one angle = 90o and the other two angles = 45o.

Draw one and just specificy two angles as being 45o with a 90o angle there. We know based on how isosceles triangles work that the two sides opposite the two 45o angles are congruent, or equal in measure, because their angles are congruent as well.

Now, specify any length to the two equal sides.  For simplicity, we'll say that these lengths = 1 each.  Using Pythagorean Theorem, we can, with a = b, say that c2 = a2 + b2 = 12 + 12 = 1 + 1 = 2.  c = Sqrt(2).  We'll denote this "c" as "r", and we'll go ahead and denote the height a (or b) = y and the length b (or a) = x.

Now, taking the triangle to go down, right, up-left (the edges, I mean), this puts the right angle in the lower-left corner.  With x = length = 1 and y = height = 1 and r = hypotenuse = Sqrt(2), we can find the six trigonometric functions for the 45 degree angles.  Take the bottom right 45o angle as our angle.  We can say that sin(45) = y / r = 1 / Sqrt(2) = Sqrt(2) / 2.  cos(45) = x / r = 1 / Sqrt(2) = Sqrt(2) / 2.  tan(45) = y / x = 1 / 1 = 1.  csc(45) = r / y = Sqrt(2) / 1 = Sqrt(2).  sec(45) = r / x = Sqrt(2) / 1 = Sqrt(2).  cot(45) = x / y = 1 / 1 = 1.

BAM.  We have all 6 functions for ALL angles of 45 degrees.  It does not matter what the lengths of the sides are:  sin(45) is ALWAYS Sqrt(2)/2.  ALWAYS.  Same with the others.

Now, let's look at that 30-60 triangle.  Rather than bother drawing a 30-60 triangle, let's draw an equilateral triangle (all lengths are the same, all angles = 60o).  We'll let each length = 2.

Now, draw a vertical line to divide this sucker in half, and we'll look at the left half.  As we can easily see, the bottom has been split in half, so no longer is it = 2, but now it = 1.  We'll let this be our length x, and the height = y, and our hypotenuse = r.  Because we split the triangle in half, we also split that top angle in half.  Now, the top angle is 30o, putting our 60o down in the lower left corner, and our right angle is in the lower right.  Now, we need to find the length of this height.  By Pythagorean Theorem, we have r2 = x2 + y2.  22 = 12 + y2.  4 = 1 + y2.  3 = y2.  y = Sqrt(3).

Now that we have all three angles and all three sides, we can find the trigonometric functions.  We shall evaluate them at the 60o angle.

sin(60) = y / r = Sqrt(3) / 2.  cos(60) = x / r = 1 / 2.  tan(60) = y / x = Sqrt(3) / 1 = Sqrt(3).  csc(60) = r / y = 2 / Sqrt(3) = 2Sqrt(3) / 3.  sec(60) = r / x = 2 / 1 = 2.  cot(60) = x / y = 1 / Sqrt(3) = Sqrt(3) / 3.

Now for a little trick.  If you analyze the 30o angle, you see things are just the opposite.  That is, sin(30) = cos(60) = 1/2.

These are the most fundamental angles, 30, 45, and 60, and they make up something we'll look at later called the Unit Circle.  You better go ahead and start memorizing them because they are angles every aspiring math student should memorize (as you work with them later on in this course and in calculus if you do it, you use these angles so much you really can't help BUT memorize them, even accidentally).

To help, let's make a table!
       sine           cosine       tangent       cotangent   secant   cosecant
30   1/2            Sqrt(3)/2   Sqrt(3)/3       Sqrt(3)      2Sqrt(3)/3       2
45    Sqrt(2)/2   Sqrt(2)/2   1                   1               Sqrt(2)         Sqrt(2)
60   Sqrt(3)/2      1/2          Sqrt(3)          Sqrt(3)/3      2               2Sqrt(3)/3

Now for some problems!

1)  Given a right triangle with x = 20, y = 21, and r = 29, find sinA, cosA, and tanA where angle A is the angle opposite y.

sinA = y / r = 21/29.  cosA = x / r = 20/29.  tanA = y / x = 21/20.

2)  Write cot(73o), cos(a + 20o), and tan(25.4o) in terms of their cofunctions.

Well, we see for the first we have cotA.  cotA = tan(90 - A), so this would be tan(90 - 73) = tan(17o).
For the second one, it looks ugly with a variable, but don't worry about it.  Just do this normally.  cosA = sin(90 - A) = sin(90 - a + 20) = sin(70o - a).  The last one is just tanA = cot(90 - A) = cot(90 - 25.4) = cot(64.6o).

3)  Find one solution for cot(5B + 2o) = tan(2B + 4o).

Ew.  Well, just use your cofunction.  We know that cotA = tan(90 - A), so we can rewrite the cotangent part as simply tan(90 - A) = tan(90 - 5B - 2o) = tan(88o - 5B).  Putting that = tan(2B + 4o), the tangents go away, leaving us with 88 - 5B = 2B + 4.  Now it's stupid simple.  84 - 5B = 2B.  84 = 7B.  B = 12.
