Okay, I finally watched The Mist today. A friend of mine told me that it was really good. Plus my wife had read the ending on the internet and couldn't wait to see it.
WARNING!
If you haven't seen the movie and would like to see it then stop reading this post now!
The ending is pretty powerful. The main character ends up shooting the other survivors including his son instead of leaving them alive for monster food. He didn't have any bullets left to kill himself so he exited his vehicle hoping to be killed by a creature. However, no creatures come to kill him. Some military vehicles come rolling in and the mist rolls back. This is supposedly meaning that they are saving the day. If he had just waited a few more moments the other survivors including his son would still be alive. Everybody would live happily ever after, right?
It depends on how you look at it.
Just a few moments earlier a giant crab-looking creature went walking by. I'm sure there are still some creatures to deal with. Not to mention that the survivors would be living under some kind of military rule since I'm sure martial law would have been declared. My point is that the main character shouldn't beat himself up too much about killing those people. They could have still ended up getting killed by creatures or being shot by soldiers. Who wants to live under a military-style dictatorship anyway?
