Steroids @ MindSay

Athletes might be into "something else"
The other night at Jiu Jitsu school, the guys were talking about the use of body building supplements. Of course, the subject of steroids came up. I found out there are natural steroids and  legal steroids available over the counter. Husby aka The Man said that the natural steroids, if detected, are illegal for use in professional sports. I don't know how anyone deals with any of those nasty smelling, icky tasting supplements. Have you ever smelled creatine?

I rest my case.

Baseball and steroids, who's to blame?
Congress Hearings on Steroid Use in Baseball, Feb. 13

Today was a day of accusations.  A day examining who said, he said, he did, she did, he didn't.  I felt while reading through the espn blog on baseball that it was a kindergarten class without a parent to say "let's move on and say you're sorry." Come on!

It's truly a disappointment that something deemed as entertainment has captured the attention  of congress when their are countless other issues that they SHOULD be dealing with.  And while I am truly annoyed by these congressional hearings isn't this baseball's issue?  If something is illegal in baseball--why hasn't baseball figured out how to manage this?  They've dealt with scandals in the past.  When there's an argument on the field players get tossed.  When there are major problems players have been fine and suspended.  Why isn't this happening now?

Ultimately the problem should be solved (and should have already been solved) by the commissioner and owner's of baseball.  They hold the strings--the hiring and firing as well as the purse strings.  And ultimately that's what it all comes down to is the purse.  Because with the rise of the supposed and likely use of steroids in baseball, home-runs have skyrocketed, pitchers keep pitching and money keeps rolling in.  Sure the player's union has made it difficult, but have they made it impossible?  What if someone had said no in the mid 90's and demanded that baseball be cleaned up?  Eventually someone would have had to come around, because the players would have wanted to play and owners would have wanted their teams to play.  However, it appears that the owner's and the commissioner let the dollar signs guide their decisions--not integrity and certainly not ethics.

The sad thing is that while these hearings might hurt Clemens--true fans will still want to listen and watch baseball come April.  I can hear that "take me out to the ballgame theme now."  And even if it hurts MLB attendance initially at some point folks will forget and come back--because it's the sport that gets to people.  While the drama behind the scenes now is ugly the drama on the field every season cannot be scripted any more beautifully.  It's something that fans can cheer for, connect with and embrace.

So I guess what does that say about us all?  That we want to win at any cost?  That we're willing to bend the rules a little for the sake of a game?  Or that we expect that baseball should be able to manage their own game that fans support, pay for, sweat for and dream about.

Baseball--take a stand.

Steroid Scandal Now Includes Rappers

The Times Union of Albany (New York) is reporting that 50 Cent, Timbaland, Wyclef Jean, and Mary J. Blige have been cited in a steroid investigation by Albany’s District Attorney. From the AP:

“Records shared with the Times Union and information from several cooperating witnesses on Long Island indicate the celebrities received prescribed human growth hormone or steroids. In some cases aliases were used for their delivery.”

Similar to pro sports, it’s not surprising to see celebrities getting caught up in the steroid game.  With videos continuing to get racier, they are under pressure to look better and keep up with the competition.

Of the stars cited in the report, I have to say Timbaland is probably the one with the most visible changes.  I remember him as being a little bit pudgy, but at the VMAs this year, the dude was jacked up, as this photo comparison above illustrates.

What do you think, are rappers juicing too?

((Tomorrow always seems so far...))

I'm on two medications right now, and I'm not really liking it.

I drank orange juice at work (not a common brand), on Friday. I thought it was weird that my legs itched and had a few bumps on them when I got home, but I thought nothing of it. But on Saturday I drank quite a bit of it, and the itching went elsewhere (arms, scalp, eye, ear) that night. When I woke up on Sunday morning, my right eye was really swollen, and my left ear was too. My head itched and had bumps on my scalp, and a little bit down my neck. I took Benadryl allergy medicine, hoping it would help. A few hours later, I went to Urgent Care because nothing happened...and I had hives on the backs of my arms, and some on my legs, a few on my hairline, and a bunch on my scalp. Apparently, I'm allergic to orange juice.

So, right now I'm on steroids, and some other medication. But I hate it because the steroids make me not able to go to sleep. Sunday night, I got three and a half hours of sleep...and still had to go to school this morning. ICKKKK.

The medication is not helping too much. I still itch, but not so bad...at all. I just wish this fucking thing would go away. I HATE ORANGE JUICE now.

I hate this.
