Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness

My legs hurt.

You go to the gym or try a new exercise and you say the next day i felt okay, but the day after i could barely walk cos my legs are so stiff and sore.

Sound familiar?

Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness (DOMS) - although still not fully understood - happens when the muscles are loaded on an eccentric muscle contraction (when the muscle is lengthened).  At a microscopic level the muscle filaments tear and the muscle membranes become damaged causing pain, tenderness and swelling.

Another theory is the release of oxygen free radicals that occur through inflammtion.  They damage cell membranes too.

The possible reason the pain occurs 48 hrs after the exercise is that the cells die in that time.  When muscle tissue is being regenerated, the nerve endings are stimulated, causing pain.

As for reducing the effects - good luck :)

The best thing to do is train (:( for some)  Start slow and build up.  The muscles become accustomed to training and it becomes easier.

Stretching does not prevent nor treat muscle soreness.

A theory is that soreness is part of the natural process of muscle hypertrophy (increase in muscle mass).

Rock on!

training the muscles
my entire musculoskeletal system is rebelling against me right now. the long weekend was a mistake. i should have trained through it harder. instead, i let the weather direct my training. came back tuesday stronger than ever and banged out 3x80 rhythm composites at rate 40 with 60 pounds. comps are never easy but even with 5-10 more pounds than in spring, the rhythm of the motion kept the bar returning from the floor each time. i can only imagine that when i stop doing these things after next tuesday's sets of 110 reps, i'm going to be able to jump over small houses and trees. perhaps vault a telephone pole or two. NO! BAD ANDY! NO BREAK TAPER!

i'm dreaming. the reality is that i should get up and go take advil. need to stretch badly, but the muscles are still too tight. i don't want to tear anything. thankfully, today was last hard day before saturday's race. my pieces were an informal combination of pieces ranging from 30 seconds at 50 SPM a few times to the two-minute piece at an even-40.

the water has sucked a lot lately. start asking for zero wind in oak ridge.

sleep time for andy. this update stuff i wrote is way too simple. i'm too good at wasting time.

My Body Is In Agony, But It's All Good.

OUCH.  I can't move. My muscles are screaming! For the past two days, I've joined my friends Tammie, Cassie and Becky (the Pretty Ponies) in their daily walks.  We have decided to go through a transition.  We are changing our eating habits and we are working out everyday.  They've been doing it for a little over two weeks and they are already showing some results.

The first day of walking, I wanted to fucking die.  I kept thinking; How long is this damn trail? I just knew I wasn't going to make it, but my friends wouldn't leave me behind to die. Even after I pleaded, "Go on without me! Save yourselves!", the other Pretty Ponies wouldn't leave my lame ass behind.  Yesterday, however I did pretty well.  I did 100% better. I think it had something to do with the fact that I used my inhaler before I went on the trail.  I really got an ego boost when a hot guy saw me actually jogging and he said, "Oh yeah, you're going to really get sexy running! Do it!" Well, he's right. I'm fixin' to get sexy!
