Another weekend gone, another something something. Though I've been making a point to employ the idea of "The Deed Makes The Day" lately, I failed miserably this past weekend. What can I say? I got lazy. I spent most of the weekend playing video games and watching movies. Maybe I was doing so subconsciously because I start school again this week. Once again, I'd be looking more forward to brain surgery but I'll only have to use that phrase a few more times before I'm done.
In other news, I've been getting calls about a possible new job. Now that I've mentioned it, I probably won't get it. But, here's to hoping. I need more money....and fast.
As for the movies, I watched 2 selections this weekend that I hadn't seen prior, neither of them being much to rave about. First up was
Silent Hill, based on the popular video game. More than a few people had warned me about how bad this movie was but I wanted to see it for myself. Plus, my dad wanted to see it so I gave it a whirl. Surprisingly, it was better than I expected. This is not to say that it was good by any means. Did it suck? Ehhh.....no. It was just OK. It did stick to the atmosphere of the game very well but there wasn't much of a story to grasp onto. It seemed like the first hour had barely any dialogue and when the dialogue kicked in, it was nothing that you'd ever quote to your friends. As far as scares go, meh. There were a few parts that made me laugh but beyond that, nothing you hadn't seen a billion times before in any other modern horror movie. All in all, it was about 35 minutes too long and even then, it would have only been maybe decent at best. If you love the games, rent it just to say you saw it. If you love horror, you can go either way. Otherwise, it's not really worth the time.
Next was one I had very high expectations for —
Hollywoodland. Despite the inclusion of Ben Affleck, I really thought this movie was going to plow. Combining Adrian Brody with Bob Hoskins and the murder mystery surrounding the death of George Reeves, otherwise known as Superman, I really expected something special. Instead, I walked away with the same feeling I had after watching
The Black Dahlia. I found myself hitting the display button on the remote several times to see exactly how much time was left before the movie was over. The disc said 2 hours but it felt like 4 or 5. Maybe it was just me but it seemed to move like molasses through a straw and in the end, they don't even give you anything to think about other than "Why did I watch this?". Delving into the plot or narrative would really make no difference because ultimately, it's nothing I would recommend or watch again. Basically, it's a below-average murder mystery with an annoying side story and an additional annoying sub-side story about Adrian Brody and his stupid latch key kid. In short, by the time the end came, I didn't care about anything that had happened and it made me hate Superman more than I already might have. I can think of nothing worthy of praising in this movie. The film made everything look pale brown and gray and the dullness of the film was well represented by the dullness of the story. In short....boooo.
