By chance

It's long, there's a point.  Read it or don't.

For Christmas, I recieved the book "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson from Lindsay's aunt Donna, who knew it was a book that I would love.  It is a true story about Chicago around the turn of the 20th century, revolving around the construction of a world fair, coinciding with a serial killer on the loose in the city at the same time.  I do in fact love what I have read so far, so Donna was spot on with the gift.  I was discussing the book, or more importantly the subject matter with my boy Hoz the other day.  Yes the same Hoz who blogs on mindsay and looks like either a porn star, librarian, homeless person or pedophile depending on which shoelaces he straps on in the morning,  That is, however, neither here nor there.  We got to talking about serial killers, and I followed up this conversation by doing more research on wikipedia.

I read about Holmes, the killer in the book.  I checked out the Bloody Benders, which Hoz told me about.  I also checked out the BTK killer, Dennis Rader.  I searched for BTK, as I had forgotten his name.  You get hits of the murderer, as well as a couple hits based on Death Metal bands using references to serial killers in their songs and cd titles and even band names.  Appalled really is not the word, more like enraged and disappointed in the abilities of humans.

Families suffered in immense ways at the hands of a serial killer.  I firmly believe that if any person takes the life of another, they do not deserve their own life, period.  They thought themselves to have the right to end another person's life, and I do no excuse that in any way.  In correlation to that, anyone who would like to glorify those types of actions, should not be allowed to even speak, print, sing (if you could call death metal that) or in any other way broadcast those types of ideas. PERIOD.  There is no justification for it at all, and if their minds see some way of justifying such a thing, they should not be allowed an avenue to spew that filth.

I listen to many genres of music, including heavy metal.  I have been to many metal concerts over the years.  The people that go to these concerts LIVE through the music.  Think I'm wrong?  Drive by a venue where a concert is about to be held by one of those death metal groups.  Look at the people.  If they can't help themselves not to live vicariously through the music.  Glorification of this kind of thing is deplorable.  I don't propose a solution, because I'm not sure one exists.  It becomes a slippery slope to try and attempt any resolution from trying to stop people who do terrible things with their freedoms.  I don't lnow what the solution is, but my faith in people continues to be assaulted everyday, more and more.

It's hilarious. Really.

As long as whoever you're sending it to actually knows it's a joke. Which, if they (meaning me) didn't, then they might freak out a little bit (meaning shriek hysterically).

Albert was worse than any fish in the sea!

I just pre-ordered the Albert Fish movie by John Borowski. He also did the H.H. Holmes movie which I have. I get a limited edition X-ray of Albert and his famous needles which shorted the chair. There are only 1000 of them and they are hand signed by the director which I thought was pretty cool

Serial Killers, Psychology and the State Police

October 13, 2006 (San Dimas, CA) Police-Writers.com, a website dedicated to police officers turned authors, added two new police authors, Ronald Turco and Wayne Beyea.

Ron Turco is a police officer, forensic scientist and psychiatrist. He is also the author of two books on the psychology of creativity, one dealing with artists, the other on serial killers.

His book, Closely Watched Shadows, is a true crime murder mystery and a personal account of what it took to develop the psychological profile that helped convict Westley Allan Dodd of the murders of three young boys from Washington State. This book penetrates the mind of a pedophile and reveals the harrowing revulsion that drives the hunter, a sensitive man, to examine the dark corners of his soul. It describes Ron’s personal struggle to re-establish his sense of goodness and innocence.

Ron’s second book, The Architecture of Creativity–-Profiles Behind The Mask, uses the same methods of psychoanalysis to define the personalities of eight famous artists based on their artwork.

Ron is in private practice in clinical psychiatry and psychoanalysis in Portland, and is a member of the Beaverton Police Department.

Wayne Beyea retired after a 25-year career in the New York State Police as Trooper, Investigator and Senior Investigator. He supervised a very busy detective unit located in the Hudson Valley for and was specially trained in hostage negotiation and suicide intervention. He supervised design of New York State Police hostage negotiation training program and "First Officer Response to High Crisis Incident program." In retirement he is a freelance writer and author of three books.

Two of his books, “Reflections from the Shield” and “Reflections from the Shield: The Final Years” depict t Wayne Beyea’s career as a member of the New York State Police; providing an exciting expose of true criminal cases and a glimpse of New York State Police history.

His third book, a novel entitled “Fatal Impeachment” tells the story of a tenacious and young State Police Investigator who develops circumstantial evidence identifying a suspect in a rape/murder case. Incredibly, that suspect is the President of the United States. The murder was committed while he was a student in college and went unsolved for 25 years.

Police-Writers.... as the 12th NYPD, 112th Police Author

September 6, 2006 (San Dimas, CA) Police-Writers.com, a website dedicated to police officers turned authors, has added its 112th police author, Robert Mladinich.  Robert served 20 years with the New York Police Department, retiring as a detective.  He is the twelfth NYPD police officer to be added to Police-Writers.com.   Robert earned a Bachelor of Science degree from SUNY Brockport and currently services as the Communications Director for the Sergeant’s Benevolent Association.

The Sergeants Benevolent Association is comprised of approximately 10,000 active and retired sergeants of the New York City Police Department. An independent union, it acts as the collective bargaining unit for those officers during contract negotiations with the City of New York, and manages a variety of other projects – including health and welfare programs, political outreach efforts and community service initiatives – for the benefit of its members and their families. The breadth of the association’s activities is wide, but above all else, the SBA is an advocate for New York’s police sergeants, the officers who stand at the Frontline of our nation’s largest metropolitan police department.

Robert Mladinich’s debut novel, From The Mouth Of The Monster: The Joel Rifkin Story, is the true crime story of a cop and a serial killer who met in college and are bound together by fate.  In 1979, the two met as journalism students.  Over two decades later, New York Police Department Detective Mladinich visited Rifkin in prison to examine what both had made of their lives. And, to explore Rifkin’s savage murder of seventeen young women.

In a chilling series of exchanges, Rifkin bared his soul to Mladinich, chronicling his lost years: the missed opportunities, the failed relationships, and the terrible details behind his killings. But Mladinich probed deeper, forcing Rifkin to confront the horrifying nature of his crimes.  Drawn from interviews with Rifkin and his mother, and conversations with acquaintances and professionals who encountered him, From The Mouth Of The Monster is an exacting true-crime portrayal and a chilling study of the possible evil within us all.

Police-Writers.com now lists 112 police authors and their 338 books in six categories.
