Sciatica @ MindSay

Just cut my leg off..

I couldn't be more serious. The same pain that attacked me yesterday has been here, with me stumbling around, crying (but not hitting, there's a huge bruise from yesterday), in the exact same level of pain as yesterday. Now hub see's the cardiogist Thursday, & my doc is on vacation, so I'm now forsed to hope hub is in good enough shape to do what he has to do, & the same for me. It's truly incrdbible. So, I'm gonna go ahead & have my doc set me up with a surgeon, to tell me what I'm facing. I'd rather lose my leg, than hurt to this degree. Prayer is very appreciated, Blessed Be, QuellyQ

Been a long time....still in pain

BLAHH! Thats how I feel. How long does one have to have pain for in order for it to be considered chronic.....cause it feels pretty damn chronic to me. Now the pain has moved into my other leg (it used to be only in the left)....now it takes turns and sometimes I feel it in both legs simultaneously. Occasionally it feels as if my leg muscles are all taking turns spasming....THIS SUCKS!!!! Im not really sure what to do anymore and I spend most of my sleeping time tossing and turning and crying. I am going to give accupuncture another week or so to do something and if not I think Im going to go see a neurologist. I really hope its nothing serious but the pain has progressed for the worse despite physical therapy, accupuncture, and a normal MRI of the hip and lower spine. GRRR!!! I wish I was healthy. I miss health. I was trying to stay positive about all this at first but im a worrier by nature and my mind is getting the best of me...the pain is effecting all aspects of my daily life, I cannot enjoy sleep, I cannot enjoy excercise, I cannot enjoy social activities....and Im becoming depressed. I really dont know what to do.

Other than my pain issue. There is not much going on. The new guy is still around but Im not so sure he is that interested. He doesn't make time for me. He is dealing with some personal issues and so  I guess forming a new relationship is not at the top of his list. I guess with my issues that Im dealing with, its not at the top of mine either.....but I like him so I was willing to make the effort. Only time will tell.

I hope it is warm this weekend. It will be something to look forward to

What a day!
I've been a little scarce today, and I'll tell you why.

I slept very little last night. Mostly in the company of a cranky kidlet who cried out a lot in his sleep that he wanted...ready?... a cold shower on his hair.

Yep.  That's my boy.

Today has been spent doing the marketing at Albertsons and Costco, as well as getting stuff ready for Cyclone to go on his first youth group mini-retreat. It starts tonight and ends Sunday afternoon.  So, of course, we had to do some packing.  And make sure to provide munchies. :)

Today has also been spent walking a lot.  Now, that's just lots of fun because sciatica has reared its painful head again. We haven't spent meaningful time together since I was in my sophomore year at Cal State Long Beach, so you can imagine my surprise when it showed up last night.

When not shopping, packing, putting stuff away, whining about my leg or waiting for CR's bus, I tried desperately to take a nap.

I should know better. <smile>

I am currently re-reading Patrick, by Stephen Lawhead.  Not my favorite of his novels (Merlin would have to be my over-the-top favorite of his) but it's seasonal and I thought I'd visit it again.

Back to the youth group thing...  See, it's his first time away from home overnight that wasn't at a grandparent/aunt/camping with Dad gig.  So it's needful for this Mom to know that she can send her son off for a couple of nights with folks from the youth ministry team.  I've been waiting, remember, my whole life for this time of his life, but that doesn't mean that everything is breezy for me! :)  He's standing here now, tapping a toe and sighing. Loudly.  Yes, it's about time to get on the road.

As soon as he brushes his teeth...!

"But Mom, I've already brushed today...."  -- direct quote.  Just now.

Yes, I have to let him go. <grin>

Know Your Pain: Sciatica – Is That What’s Wrong With Me?

Ever experienced a dull, sharp, burning pain accompanied by intermittent shocks of shooting pain beginning in the buttock traveling downward into the back or side of the thigh and/or leg and even in your feet. Usually sciatica affects one side of the body. Sometimes symptoms include tingling and numbness. Sitting and trying to stand is painful and difficult. Even coughing and sneezing hurts. You may be experiencing sciatica nerve compression.

The term "sciatica" is commonly used to describe pain traveling in the distribution of the sciatic nerve. Sciatica is a symptom caused by a disorder occurring in the lumbar spine. The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the human body, about the diameter of a finger.

Some Reasons for Sciatica

Compression of the sciatic nerve can cause many of the above symptoms. Nerve damage is rarely permanent and paralysis is seldom a danger as the spinal cord ends before the first lumbar vertebra.

Misalignment of the vertebrae of the spine is one of the greatest causes of sciatic syndrome. The misalignment reduces the foramina (opening) between the vertebrae where the sciatic nerve exits the spine, causing a pinching of the nerve. The pinching results in inflaming the nerve and causing an acute attack.

Poor posture over the years can also place stress on the spine with the same result. A chiropractor can generally correct anomalies with manipulation of the spine. Massage compliments this treatment by softening and expanding the muscles surrounding the spine and bony areas of the spine.

Piriformis Syndrome is a condition in which the piriformis muscle irritates the sciatic nerve, causing pain in the buttocks and referring pain along the course of the sciatic nerve.

There are other conditions, which may occur, and may mimic true sciatica but these are difficult to diagnose. So, make sure you see your physician and ask questions to determine exactly what is causing your pain.

Remember to always speak with a physician before beginning any type of physical exercise. If the sciatic pain is acute, resting for 1-2 days is recommended before addressing the pain with yoga. Forward bending poses are contraindicated; side-bending poses are cautioned. Seek medical attention immediately if you experience loss of bladder or bowel control, or increasing weakness or numbness in the legs.

Practice good posture and body mechanics throughout your day. Take frequent breaks to breath, stretch and relax. Avoid sitting for long periods and rest on your back with your knees bent.

Hubby was home all week!

My last two posts have been pretty intense, I know that....thank you for all of your responses, etc. They were in no way meant to be depressing or to represent that I was depressed. Hey, when one is inspired to write, I say WRITE! :)  Sometimes at holidays memories and feelings associated with them are just more clearer, arent they?

Update on hubz... he is still in alot of discomfort...all week long we have attacked it unmercifully with chiropractic, massage and pain killers. Today we are going to the pool after my last client and going to walk it out a little and then he can use the whirlpool and the steam room... maybe later I will massage it, since I didnt do that yesterday.  I have been trying to do that part every other day. I even had my therapist work on him, cause sometimes it's just better to have someone other than family work on family.

So, this morning we are a fine pair, I put tiger balm on his left calf, and then he put some on me, finally doing so without complaining about it getting on his fingers.  Odd that we are both affected on the same side isnt it?

He says to me, I dont know how you have dealt with this for so long Dawn... I am a wimp when it comes to pain. I just nodded. ( LOL!)  But I do feel for him. Plus he is our main breadwinner.  His job has offered him to come and work in the office next week if he can per the Dr.. which he is going to see again on Tuesday. He drove out there Friday but they were having a meeting ( probably a christmas party! the devils!). The Xray shows L5/S1 deterioration at the disc level, same as mine was after my accident.

Hoping that conservative treatment and good self care will work for him. I know alot of you suffer with sciatica, so I will post some sciatica information soon.

Well, I should go get ready to head over to the office, and earn my keep!!

Have a super Saturday!

Love and Laughter,

Dawn
