Milk: Men Kissing Men For Academy Awards
Harvey Milk as played by Sean Penn in Gus Van Sants Milk Milk is a Hollywood feature film directed by Gus Van Sant that stars Sean Penn, James Franco, Emile Hirsch, Diego Luna and Josh Brolin.

Harvey Milk was a Gay Rights activist in 1970's San Francisco.  Just one year after winning a post as City Supervisor (the first openly gay politician ever to be elected to public office in the United States) Harvey ran into some serious trouble with another councilor who ran for the same post on Family Values ticket. Josh Brolin does a good job as the old fashioned thinker, Dan White, but Sean Penn could win an Academy Award for his portrayal of Harvey Milk.

Directed by Gus Van Sant, the biopic must have been helped along by the success of The Life and Times of Harvey Milk, an Academy Award winning documentary on the same subject.

Milk the movie starring Sean Penn as Gay Rights activist Harvey MilkStraight guys, be warned... about four minutes into the film there's a love scene that's hard for heterosexual men to watch, and if you do go see this movie in the theatre I would sit up front and turn around to look at the crowd during this two minute scene (trust me you'll know the one when it arrives) man, I bet every guy in the room is looking at his shoes.

But after those painful moments you soon forget Sean Penn is playing Harvey Milk, and the character really comes alive... You root for him in the political rallies, feel sorry for him at funerals, and really come to celebrate and rejoice in his struggle.

All that being said, I'm pretty sure MILK isn't something you'll rent to watch with the guys.

I have some official SWAG from the moviethat I'm selling online. Here's a link to a Milk movie hat and tshirt on eBay.

The Teacher doesn't understand

Hi there,

Well, we've hit our first bump and it is the teacher.  We had a great meeting at the school with the various people that will be involved with getting William up to speed with his reading and math.

We discussed what the school will do to help Will.   Result was no timed testing, help with his reading, all seemed like it was going well.

When class started up again, the teacher changed NOTHING.  He still has timed tests, he still is humiliated in front of the class with reading.  The teacher sends home notes like, make flash cards. Like flash cards are all that are needed for dyslexia.

Gosh, all of you out there with dyslexia.....The answer is GET FLASH CARDS.

It bothers me as a parent that the teacher didn't even do any research on what it is like to have dyslexia.

Bottom line is that we all agreed that the best thing we could do was to protect Will's sense of self-worth, and the teacher is tearing it down.

Tomorrow I talk to the principal.  She will help, she is on the side of the student.

On Vacation!
I'm going to Wimberley, TX tonight on vacation.  I won't be back until tomorrow night.

Either way, Wimberley is like a three hour drive from here.  But I drive 6 hours a day for a living, so that shouldn't matter.

Golfing San Antonio, the conquest continues

Played Olmos Basin golf course today in San Antonio at my dad's behest.  This was probably the pinnacle of my San Antonio golfing experience.  I would have been glad to go back to Alamo Golf Club (par 65, beginner friendly atmosphere), but Olmos sounded like a good challenge anyway.  Plus it's cool for historical purposes and bragging rights

We got to the clubhouse and there was a line of 6 carts at the first tee.  Being the day after Thanksgiving, the course was packed (naturally).  I was getting close to running away screaming like a little sissy girl but my dad was like yeah man, i'm cool with it.  So I regained my composure, paid and got in line.  It was funny that the guy asked if we had a tee time but when I called and asked earlier, someone insisted that there were no tee times today, just "pay and play."

The wait wasn't too bad.  The people in front of us hit a lot of bad tee shots.  This is where we had the advantage of being warm, having practiced some earlier.  However, this became a bit of a disadvantage for me, being always tight in the morning, as on my last practice shot at the range, I pulled a muscle in my neck and it was still bugging me.  In fact it is still bugging me now.  I took some Ibuprofen earlier and am still waiting for it to kick in, but it has to fight its way through Thanksgiving dinner redux.

Anyway, we ended up playing with this guy and his son, who was 11-13.  He was probably a 15 handicap and fun to play with.  His son was a little better than me I think.  I had one great chip shot, a seven iron from 20 yards up to about 2 inches.  Too bad it didn't just drop.  Since my chipping and sand lesson, both aspects of my game have improved.  If only I could do the same for pitching to take some of the guesswork away.  But I keep hoping I can accomplish the same on my own through reading/self feedback.

Having a pulled neck muscle wasn't bad, but I had some mental breakdowns at certain blow up holes.  I need to start understanding the effect a hard lie is going to have on my shot.  The ball tends to go lower and slice more, probably due to my subconsciusly avoiding the hard surface and pulling the ball more around to the left.

I still slice a lot but do not slice all my shots.  I noticed today that I have a fairly weak grip which I am going to start looking at correcting.  This may help me bring the club to a more ideal position on the backswing, as well as aid in my release.  I notice that some shots "feel" better at address.  This may have something to do with using a stronger grip on certain shots.  I certainly do not address and grip the ball the same every time, even though I try to.

No pars today, but there were some respectable bogeys and semi-respectable double bogeys.  I had one good par put from 5 feet and missed it.
