Many mindsay members whom I admire are backing Ron Paul. I'm not. What can I say after I've said I'm sorry? Read on.

The conditions that Libertarians demand in order to shrink government and free us from the state -- minimal taxes, the dismantling of public services and social security, deregulation, the breaking of the unions -– just happen to be the same conditions required to make the rich even richer, while throwing everyone else to the wolves.

The process of giving life to our constitutional rights has largely been the work of liberals. On the greatest fight of all, to treat blacks as human beings, libertarians supported the other side. Christian libertarians like Ron Paul want God in the public schools and are happy to have the government forbid abortion and gay marriage.

Americans over 30 grew up in a country where the rich got more, but everyone prospered. Now because of conservative government, riding the wave of libertarianism, when productivity rises the rich keep the gains; the middle class barely stays where it is; the poor get poorer.

As crisis after crisis continues, more Americans will wake up and realize something is rotten in paradise. I hope they will realize that libertarianism or conservatism is not the solution.

Then: Walter Cronkite in his famous 1968 broadcast concluded of the Vietnam war that the US was "mired in stalement" .

Now: Katie Couric said this week of Iraq: "We hear so much about things going bad, but real progress has been made in terms of security and stability".

As much as I disagree with much of what Ron Paul, and Republicans in general, stand for I am weary of the Iraq debacle. I hope the baby will not be thrown out with the bath water.
