Roe V Wade @ MindSay

Okey-dokey so The Beloved One announces Sonia Sotomayor as his pick for the soon to be vacated Supreme Court spot and in a sign that the party is intent on maintaining its irrelevance, The Republicans decide that the best angle of attack is to go the reverse racism route with a dash of "she's a friggin' moron with a fiery temper!' thrown in for good measure.
I have to stop being amazed at the stupidity of the modern Republican Party. This is the same Party that thought an animated corpse like John McCain was the best choice for President last year. Now never let it be said that people like Rush Limbaugh and former congressman Tom Tancredo (he actually equated La Raza with the KKK with a straight face) have ever missed an opportunity to let their anti-brown people bias shine through but when even supposedly bright guys like Newt Gingrich start following along with that meme it shows that there is something fundamentally wrong with the GOP down to its core.
It's fine to be dicks to black folks because black people are used to that treatment from the GOP but to go out of your way to alienate the Latino community is just plain old retarded. If not for the Latino vote we would have been spared the nightmarish 8 years of George W. Bush as president and to push away a voting block that is still up for grabs is the definition of self-destructive behavior. I have been hoping for the Republicans to get their act together because I am no more enamored by the thought of a Democratic one party rule than I was of the thought of Republican one party rule back in the early 2000's but it is getting harder and harder to root for these douchebags as they keep shooting themselves in the foot over and over again.

Now on to Ms Sotomayer...on paper she looks perfectly qualified. She went to the right schools, she has experience, she's a woman and a minority...she is the perfect candidate for the time we are living in. On paper. See my issue isn't with her slip of the tongue about judges making laws since Supreme Court justices have been legislating from the bench since forever and its a bit too late to start whining about it now. My problem is with a few of her rulings (namely Ricci vs DeStefano which I am almost positive the Supreme Court will overturn next month which should be a bit awkward and Doninger v Niehoff, Schwartz in which Sotomayor ruled in favor of a school district punishing a student for off-campus speech))and the fact that she isn't nearly as big a Lefty as I think this first nominee should have been. We already have a gaggle of very conservative Justices and I think it would have been great to nominate someone who was a bleeding heart liberal instead of yet another "middle of the road", centrist Dem.
But my major issue comes from the fact that we really have no clear picture of where she stands on abortion or how she would rule on Roe v Wade and wasn't that the line we were constantly being fed (more like threatened with) during the election?

"If you don't vote for Obama then Roe v Wade will be overturned!" The only way to safeguard Roe v Wade is to elect Obama because he will only nominate people who agree with that ruling!" "Plus we will all get ponies!"

Sorry 'bout that, I lost my train of thought. Anyhoo, what I want to hear is whether Sotomayor (who is a practicing Catholic btw) supports Roe v Wade or not since that has always been the litmus test for every nominee to the highest court regardless of which side of the political fence they lived on. And I don't think that has changed at all.

Roe vs. Wade and states' rights
If we overturn Roe vs. Wade on the basis that states should hold the authority to decide who gets what civil rights, then why don't we just rid the Bill of Rights from the Constitution? After all, states should hold sovereignty over who can have rights and who can't, right?

I'll post an answer if I get replies to this.

On January 22, 1973, Roe v Wade made American history – women gained the legal right to control their own reproductive cycle and the genetic future of the nation.

No longer would a rapist be empowered to reproduce.  No longer would a man be able to demand the birth of children.  No longer would the incompetence to those producing birth control methods be entitled to increase the population through that incompetence – if the rubber broke, there was no lawful requirement that the child exist.

Far more important – no longer would there be a market for back alley abortions which cost tens of thousands of lives, and an estimated three hundred thousand sterilizations, or near sterilizations, a year.

Prior to 1972, the best medical estimates stated America saw one million abortions annually.  One million products of unprotected, or defective protection, were terminated in a population of one hundred-sixty million.

The population has since doubled, and there are still only one million  annually.  Rubbers still break, diaphragms shift, pills fail, rapes, and the usual unprotected, unplanned act still occurs – possibly (probably) more often than thirty years ago.

Yet! Yet the number of abortions has not increased; and based on per capita analysis, almost immediately began to decrease.  Because of Roe, woman no longer had to immediately seek an abortionists – they were now free to think about whether or not they wanted an abortion.

Roe probably is responsible for more wanted children than any other judicial, legal, or moral action in history.

Those who promote the Most Harm to the Most People – they call themselves Christian Conservatives, but are diametrically opposed to biblical teachings and the explicit words of Christ – these purveyors of evil and death are opposed to the Roe outcome.

They would have unwanted children born to homes unprepared for the responsibilities of parenting.  They would create unwed mothers, or force marriages which would end in abuse and divorce.  They would  have, want to have, the right to degrade women for having the children which, in the past, were forced upon them by pre-Roe laws.

More important, given that there is a basic health reality – one of every forty-eight hundred pregnant American women die in childbirth – they would kill two hundred thousand woman a year.

Since those women would probably, over the course of their fertile lives, have three children or more children, more than six hundred thousand children would not be born.  In short, the Christian-Right has an agenda which would kill at least eight hundred thousand.

Not that the Christian-Right also opposes all forms of birth control.  It is interesting that this would double, or triple the number of unwanted children – hence the number of illegal abortions, with the associated  number of pre-Roe deaths or sterilizations.

The policy of the Christian-Right is therefore one of killing the most number of people.  This they realize can best be achieved through a combination which denies contraception prevention and termination.

The Most Harm to the Most People.  In the area of sexuality, there is a powerful series of forces at work.  Even excluding the millions who would die through a reversal of Roe, the act of denial of contraception – as applied by America Conservative dictates applied to Third World populations – is currently causing a rampant spread of HIV/AIDS.

There are many ways to commit murder – The Christian-Right has taken a page from the Papal Book of Inquisitor practices and realized you can convince the unthinking that they are being “moral” while they murder.  After all, they downplay the fact Hitler was a good Catholic, and a good faithful Christian when he set about to murder the bloodline of Jesus.

As anti-Judaic Christians have long demonstrated, the best Christian is the one who is explicitly anti-Christ teachings and mandate.  As we see, and shall continue to see in the decade to come, the Christian-Right, the Right-wing Conservatives, will engage in any action that ensures The Most Harm to the Most People; and will oppose anything which will assist people in living – be it medical, educational, or just having a solid roof over their heads.

Disavowing my home state

Yup, its official - I come from the most controversially backwards state in the union. Check it out- South Dakota bans almost all abortions: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/11699703/

I will never be able to live it down if my home state is the catalyst for the downfall of Roe v. Wade. Its depressing.
