Today was Go Texan Day! Go Texan Day is a day we celebrate to kick off the world famous (it's actually world famous) Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. This is one of my favorite times of the year. Black History Month AND the Rodeo? Hot Damn! Anyway, on Go Texan Day, we wear our rodeo duds to work and school. Here are some pictures of my little one and me.
Miss E in her gear. That's my shirt in the background. LOL!
Miss E sans her boots.
Check me out, I gotta new hat this year!
Here I am trying to have my photo session and guess who decides to cut in on my camera time? Oh well!
The first event Sunday was the calf roping competition. Unfortunately, this shot of a cowgirl getting ready for her call-up was the only good one I got. I was having great difficulty finding an accessible vantage point from which to shoot the action, then the blasted rain forced me and all my expensive photographic equipment back into the car (though the kids kept right on riding, right through the rain).
One of the things I love about watching kids ride horses is their total abandon to the ecstasy of the moment. Any self-respecting riding instructor would’ve likely shuddered in horror at some of the horsemanship displayed at the kids’ rodeo Sunday, but lack of proper form sure didn’t dampen the fun that was had by all. These kids are learning their way around horses and riding horses as they go, the same way I learned to ride, from simple experience. Yeah, they’ll flop around in those saddles like rag dolls for a while, but before long, they will have found their balance on their own by sheer practice and simply gaining a ‘feel’ for the horse’s back and way of going, just by DOING it. Check out how far this little gal’s butt is coming out of the saddle!
Check out the determination on this face though…little though she may be, this aint no lightweight competitor!
If I’d been shooting this cowgirl from behind, I think there might have been twice as much daylight between her butt and saddle…
One of my favorite events at any rodeo are the barrel racing classes. From the time I was 14 and up, I rode in this very same arena, doing the very same thing these kids were doing Sunday. My forte was barrel racing and pole bending, though my quarter horse, Trouble, surprised me on more than one occasion by placing in the Western Pleasure classes…we even won our share of egg & spoon races! This cowgirl lost her right stirrup before she even got around the first barrel good, but it didn’t slow here down none!
She’s headin’ fer the last barrel…
…and here they are on the race to the finish line. I remember the exhilaration of those flat out home runs after rounding the last barrel…it’s your last chance to make up for any lost time or time penalties. You’re heading for the gate with all you’ve got, not even considering whether or not you’re going to get your horse stopped before you crash into it like a torpedo. But providing you can hold on, you can rest assured the HORSE isn’t going to crash into that gate. He’s gonna slam on his brakes, or spin out to the right or left just before he hits. The question is, is the RIDER going to be able to stay with her horse, or will SHE crash through the gate?!
During the goat tying competition, once his little rider dismounted and headed for her goat, this horse decided his job was done and he turned around and headed for the gate.
AhhhHAH! THERE she is! She didn’t do too good a job with her goat, but from the look on her face, it didn’t seem to matter much. She was having a good time, and that was all that mattered.
The grand finale to most any rodeo is the bull riding. I have yet to fathom how it is that boys and men would actually WILLINGLY subject themselves to this kind of torture…
And before any of you animal rights folks get yerselves in a wad, rest assured that these bulls are not harmed in any way. It’s against bull riding rules to touch the bull with your spurs. All they do is tie a rope around the bull’s flank (not tight…just enough to tickle) and the rider has a loud bell that clangs around during the ride…all this of course, to inspire a good bucking ride.
THIS was a priceless capture of the rodeo clown…
Here’s an example of how the rodeo clowns earn their keep. It’s their job to protect the fallen riders from the bull. See the number 52 at the bottom of this pile up? That’s the tiny KID that was thrown from the bull when he crashed into the corner! The clown literally threw himself between the boy and the bull.
The little tyke came up from the pileup crying, but turned out he was more scared and shaken than he was really hurt. His MOTHER on the other hand…
I thought this was a funny shot. When you’re shooting an event like a rodeo, you’re mostly shooting pretty blindly because things are just happening too fast for any planned or structured shooting. You really only have an idea of what you got when you get home and download the pictures. This one was funny because it LOOKS like the bull is just STANDING there in a balking stance, though in reality, he was just coming down and gathering energy for the next leap!
And this one’s for snuggs !
I don’t know if the ‘action’ segment of this 2-day rodeo presentation was exactly the right placement of this unusual capture or not, but at least it might serve as warning to all you guys out there to have some couth at all times when in public. You just never know when some bozo is going to catch your lack of manners in a picture and immortalize the moment on the worldwide web.
So, on that somewhat unsettling note…it’s my bedtime…I’m OUTTA here!
At a rodeo, the seating is very informal…wherever you can find a good vantage point will likely do.
A rodeo is more than competitions between man and beast, and man vs man (or girl…whatever the case may be) – they are also meaningful social gatherings where friends can catch up with the significant events in one another’s lives…
…and young cowboys can smooze the pretty cowgirls.
Of course, good nourishment is provided for all for a nominal fee…only the finest hot dogs, chili burgers, tacos and chili fries will do for the working cowpoke.
Cowboys come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and although the cowboy hat is standard attire…
…other head dress is sometimes marginally acceptable, if your jeans, boots and attitude are convincingly authentic.
Cowboys are all about tidiness and curb appeal.
Now that I’ve gotten you in the proper rodeo mood and mindset, hold onto your hats ladies and gentlemen, the action is about to begin!
