JULIE'S RIVER JOURNAL - SECOND WEEK
July 3, 2008

Took off late afternoon and arrived at claim around 7:00pm. Got organized and fixed turkey dogs for dinner. Long day of running around and getting things done. Ready for bed early. Read a few chapters in book.

July 4, 2008

Up early to discover I'd left the eggs at home. So it was a bowl of raisin bran for breakfast then off to the hole for a couple hours work. Dave needed oil for the chainsaw so we drove to Cecilville, to Doyle's Camp. They are open Friday, Saturday & Sunday only from 12 - 8. We got there at 12:15. Not that it is a long drive but man it we had gotten there earlier and they were closed! Grrrr! No 4th parade this year. It got moved to the "Forks" ..... Forks of Salmon. Which is not any bigger than Cecilville ..... maybe a population of 75. Got back with eggs and oil and ate lunch then back to the gold hole. Mined till about 5:00 then stopped and did clean up. Homegrown artichokes for dinner and cantaloupe. Bed. More chapters read.

July 5, 2008

Up early to a huge breakfast of eggs, turkey bacon, potatoes and toast. Then back to work at the hole. Morning run produced a nice piece of gold and a lot of little pieces. Dave's friend Mitch showed up with another friend Al. Right about lunchtime so we ended up skipping lunch and mining with them. Mitch had the fever bad and could not get him to slow down and run the high banker properly. Probably lost gold. Kind of a frustrating afternoon. After shutting down and doing clean up Mitch and Al left. YAY! Dinner was tacos, broccoli and cantaloupe. Bed. More reading.

July 6, 2008

Early rising again. Another large breakfast. Off to the hole. Same routine, broke for lunch, afternoon run ..... clean up and dinner. Beautiful day. Found gold. Always good. Dinner was pork loin chops with corn on the cob and applesauce. Early to bed. Read a lot tonight.

July 7, 2008

Woke up tired. Could barely eat breakfast. Went to hole and did the morning run. Broke for lunch. We decided to take the afternoon off since we were both spent. Dave made a beautiful tent site and got the tent set up. I read. And read. And read. Hammocks are up and way to comfortable! At least till the afternoon sun hits them, then ..... well, a bit warm at best. Went swimming in afternoon in the river. Played with dogs. Dinner was hamburgers w/cheese and zucchini and applesauce. Went for a long walk after dinner. Got back after dark. Straight to bed. Finished book in the afternoon so no reading tonight. Had to tell Dave the end of the story. Refrigerator broken. Losing food.

July 8, 2008

We lost milk due to the frig. No eggs left. Didn't trust what bacon was left. So, toast for breakfast and a granola bar. Then down to the hole for a couple hours before loading up and heading home. Found a bit of gold. Jumped in river to cool down before the drive home. And here I am.

DREAMS:

Don't normally remember my dreams.  But this trip we were "dry" ..... and after the second night exhaustion helped put me to sleep.  And did I dream.  I don't remember much but here is a sampling:

Crab Man from the tv show My Name Is Earl is washing the windows on the trailer.  I am naked on the bed and shocked to see him out there this early in the morning washing my windows AND he's peeking in ......

cllecr calls and tell me that my granddaughter lauralew had called her and asked her if she could wear some lip gloss to wherever she was going.  This made me mad and I called Laura and asked her why she would call cllecr and ask her such a thing.  Her reply:  "Well, I can't ask you four!"

lauralew is walking down a street with a child.  Her hand on his shoulder.  As I approach she totally dismisses me as if I don't exist.  I call to her and she keeps walking.

My lifelong friend Nancy has called and wants me to come over.  I pass her husband on the way into their house and he tells me she is sick.  As I enter Nancy is curled up in the corner with a piece of paper and pen, she is sweating profusely.  "I have Coyote (I don't remember what followed coyote).  I have company coming for dinner you need to do my grocery shopping.  I tell her she needs to call off her dinner party and I'm not doing any of her grocery shopping.

NEW EXPERIENCES ON THE RIVER:

A beautiful Eagle flies up river every morning .... does some fishing in the river and flies back down river.  An amazing sight to behold.  One magnificent bird.  Huge.  Massive wingspan.

For lack of not knowing what to call it ...... for the first time we saw a river otter or Fisher (maybe) in the river.  It swam right up to Joe ..... they touched noses, it did a few turns in the water and was gone.  Have not seen it since.

MEMORIES:

Emotions got to me this trip.  It has not been like that for a long time.  Again being "dry" helps me to remember things I may not otherwise.  And tears flowed.  Standing in the place where the cabin once stood a train hit me.  A memory train.  Pictures of past.  Pictures of happy times.  Wanting so badly for my dad to see us there working .... where he and his dad and other family members worked.  He'd be thrilled.

I was hoping to replace the camera that I broke with something cheap to get us by till we can afford something else.  But the day the refrigerator arrived, the microwave quit.  Blew up.  Gonzo.   And now the camera money will go to a microwave.  Lately it has been nonstop crap here ...... one thing after another.

We will head back into the claim Friday afternoon after Dave's doctors appointment.  I will come out Monday to deal with Monday night senior bingo.  No one there to take money or hand out money so I was nominated.  Again.  I wanted my summer off from the bingo bunch.  Grrrr! I'll go back in on Tuesday.  And more than likely come out Thursday .... maybe even Wednesday ..... truly depends on the doctor appointment.

Well .... that's my story and I'm sticking to it.  Dry no more ..... its about time I get my ass in the shower ..... phew!

Peace.  J.

Shopping, Zoo, Storms, and Detours!

We decided to go shopping before the zoo, my sister and I!  What a great day we had planned.  And it was going so well!  Out of the six major Thrift World Stores in the Metro area of Omaha, we hit two.  The two nicest ones with the Brand Name clothes!  One on the Northwest side of Omaha and one on the Southeast side of Omaha near the Zoo.

What a great way to end our mini camping trip that just turned in to being a mini stay at my sister's house due to the varying weather that kept popping up!  Instead of staying at the really nice free camp grounds we stayed at my sister's house for a few days, I wasn't going to chance being caught near a big man made lake that had extermly high levels near the banks of the camp ground!

Anyway, after a GREAT haul of a summer woredrobe for both kids from two different thrift shops and then treating the kids to lunch, we headed to Henery Dooley (sp?) Zoo for a nice afternoon.  It started out great!  We hit the Jungle, the Sea Lions, the Garden of Senses, the Cat House, part of the Avaiary, the Gorrila House, the Cat Complex, the feeding time for the smaller tropical birds, the Desert Dome, and the Giaraff House.  With smaller enclousers along the way of course!  Of course pictures are on here!  Enjoy!

While we were just ouside of the New Butterfly House and the Aquareme deciding which one we were going to go in first before we started heading to the town were my van was sitting so the kids and I could head home and my sister and her kids could head home, we heard the tornado sirins go off!  Now I know why so many ppl get killed in public places during storms!  The tornado sirns go off and the majority of the Zoo visitors head for the Goddess Dayum parking lots!  I kid you not!  Well being country girls, my sister and I herd the kids to the aquarememe (sp?) house under the canapoy and bust out our cell phones.  Each of us respectively calling our hubby's, asking them why the hell neither one of them called to tell us there was a storm system heading straight at Omaha!  We informed both of them that we were heading for the storm shelters in the Fish house and we would call once the storm passed.  Then we hearded the kids towards one of the Zoo Workers holding a door open to the basement of the complex leading to the exective offices and we were one of the first groups down.

There were a few other ppl down there already but what we found the most funny out of this was that everyone single person down there including us, were NOT from Omaha persay but from the surrounding communities and areas!  We are NOT fools!  While the main secruity guy was telling us and the few zoo workers what the plan was, he was getting reports from the weather radio and the few of us that stopped and made calls.  Then he asked us to sit tight, while he and his other crew went outside to go round up the rest of the Zoo visitors and get them inside various zoo complexes till the storm passed.

We had a couple of upset kids of course, my daughter being one of them, and a lot of upset ppl, including ball players that stuck around after the College World Series before they went home.  Those of us from the midwest were laughing and joking and calming the kids down.  We kept telling everyone that we are in one of the safest buildings and don't worry about the animals they know what to do and the zoo workers were making sure they were safe also.  Once all the zoo workers got in the main secruity guy came back in to our basement and said it was pitch black out and winds up to 90-100 miles per hour and they would not know if a tornado hit till after it was clear out.  The lights did go out and thankfull the generator kicked on right away.

After we got the okay to clear out and leave the zoo, we got some pictures of the damage done in side the zoo.  Down trees and one of the heavy glass safety entrance doors to the Wild Kingdom Palliviallion was completely blown off and laid gently down in front of the Pavillion!  I missed that picture! There was hail everywhere!  We had to make our way out of the Eastern Side of Omaha back towards the I-10 exit so we could head to Freemont NE which is an hour Northeast of Omaha, where my van was sitting!  Damage everywhere!  While driving the news said, the Art Festival got hit hard downtown Omaha, there was a boat taken off of a dock in the Missiouri and was dropped on the roof of a house, trees blocking roads, and down electrical poles all over Omaha downtown/metro area!  We stopped on the outskirts of town to feed the kids and the Taco Johns we hit had running TVS.  The area heading to Fremont NE was hit hard also and a semi rig was entangled in electrical wires!  Cars of the road, rigs off the road, and major damage.  This system worked its way into IA and massive damage and two killed on the IA side.

We got detoured outside of a town between Omaha and Fremont due to massive damage and accidents.  Where I got a phone call from Randy when he got home.  My dog Spud died during the day yesterday!  Randy was upset and of course the kids and I were very upset also, but we also knew the dog was going to end up dying on us.  Spud was the dog with the unknown seizures.  At first Randy thought he somehow choked while he was outside on the chain but when he went up to examine Spud, there was plenty of slack in the chain and the collar would have slipped right off of his neck (we made sure that it could slip off if he was caught up when running or on the chain if something would have happened).  The way Spud was laying and his facial features, you could tell he had a massive siezure.  So trying to find our way on back country roads and county paved hiways we didn't know to get back into Fremont, we had upset kids and nobody was out directing the traffic.  My sister and I again being country girls said fuck it and got on a country road and started heading towards the sun because Northwest was where we wanted to head.  We picked up a truck in front of us from our home area just a different county and he had the same idea.  We got rerouted via the roads with no help from anyone due to big trees, silos, fencing, and other debries in the mushy gravel roads!  A normal 1 hour drive from Omaha to Fremont took 2 hours!

Once we got to a lil town Southeast of Fremont which would have been the quickest route we got denied by a State Trooper directing traffic.  Nobody was allowed into town where a small lake was surrounded wiht houses and such due to the damage!  They weren't letting anyone through not even family members of the town or land owners with no houses.  Ambulances and Fire trucks were all over the town and two of the rural fire trucks were making their way towards the other road leading to Fremont.  We just turned around and followed the fire trucks into Fremont.  Finally!  Fremont NE had no major damage.  Some trees down and some windows broken but no major damage.  Then we pull up into the truck stop where we left my van.  I got a lovely suprise!  My rear windsheild was blown out or a rock got kicked up in the storm!  I have no rear windshield now!  Nothing was stolen.  But everything was glass covered clear up to the front seat and everything was water logged!  Thank GODS I had what ever paperwork I did have in there in sacks and covered up!  My Leadership Manual alone would have cost me 100 some dollars to replace if it got water logged or damaged somehow!

So I called Randy yet again and told him we FINALLY made it into Fremont but I would be still a lot later because we had to clean up the glass and find places for the kdis to sit with out getting cut up!  Thankfull we were able to pull a couple of the pillows from underneith my tent that dind't have glass on it and give those to the kids to sit on.  My sister handed over one of her towels so I could sit on it while driving.  And then we rearrange the back so none of my Thrift shop finds, my tents, sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, or other camping gear would go flying out for my hour drive home!  I ended up pulling over twice on the way home to rearrange my back but FINALLY my normal two hour drive ended up being a 4 hour and 45 minute drive and we made it home at 8:45pm.  where we promptly unloaded the van and shop vaccued it out so I could get some plastic on the windshield due to more storms coming this weekend.

After we got that done, we gave Spud my Fat Man Dog a burial worthy of a King.  See we couldn't bury him.  The ground is too wet and his smell would draw the local wild dog pack and the local coyote pack.  Not to mention all the other wild critters int he area.  So we took my lovely burn pile Randy made up for me this weekend and gave Spud a Funeral Pry.  We didn't want any other anmals digging him up and eating on him.  Randy loaded him on the bonfire and I threw some sage, cedar chips, and sweet grass all over Spud and we said a lil blessing for him and said our goodbyes.

Now today, I get to call his old family and inform them that he is gone.  I am doing laundry from the back of my van and going to take the kids down to my girl's house because they are still stressed from last night.  A lil fun down at Aunties house and coming home about the time Daddy gets home from work will do them good.

Now I am off to throw another sleeping bag into the wash!  Pictures to come after this post!

OUTTA HERE - FOR REAL THIS TIME ...... !
Gone gone gone .....

New refrigerator gets delivered Thursday afternoon, so either Dave or I will come out and deal with that, do some laundry and pick up some supplies.  And head back up on Friday.  Then not sure when we will be back out again.

Got a great deal on a fridge.  Sears is having an awesome sale ..... so if for some reason you need to buy an appliance ..... check them out ..... saved a couple hundred bucks.  YAY!

The dogs flipped when Dave took off with the trailer this morning.  But when he came home they settled down.  Now they have watched us loading up the leftover stuff and know its happening.  Some happy dogs.

Hope everyone has a great weekend and week ...... I'll check in when I come out next.  Don't forget me, k?  Please ????

Peace.  J.

Till Tomorrow ........
It was just another eff'd up day.  And there is absolutely no reason for details.  Just know that I could not get online till after 5:00 today ...... or pretty close to it.

So, the refrigerator issue turned into a freaking nightmare this morning with it ending in mom, Dave and I all pissed off at one another.  It's way to long of a story to get into .... so I'm not.  Sometimes we wonder why we bother trying to help though.  Enough said.

Dave and his friend Mitch are taking the trailer in tomorrow.  Dave is still outside doing final touches.  I'm done asking if I can help ..... it just tends to get me in trouble.  I don't know if it is because we are so close to leaving that we are fighting so much, but today has been just stupid.  One argument after another.  Stupid shit.

I will take mom into town tomorrow to look at a couple of refrigerators, make arrangements for delivery and then home to get things packed up to take out Saturday.   And we are gone.  Till we come out.  I don't have to come out till the 14th of July.  And I may not.   I'm gonna have to regardless but it sure nice to think that maybe I won't.  But I will.  Fuck.

Right now we are using a 60's refrigerator .... no shit.  Its pretty funny.  Small.  Olive green.  But it runs and is keeping the food cold.  Obviously not too economical ..... which is why we need to get another one in soon.  In the meantime, thank you for friends who have old refrigerators laying around.

Alright, out of here ...... I'll post tomorrow I'm sure ..... which will probably be my final post till I come out from down river maybe mid week ...... time to get to work ...... gold is beckoning ......

Till tomorrow ...... sleep well ......

Peace.  J.

THE THERMOSTAT IS HERE! THE THERMOSTAT IS HERE!
Bingo last night.  So I was up to late and then up to early this morning.  But I did scrounge up $1.00 worth of change and played a game ..... and won $45.00.  The bingo gods smiled on me.  And I stopped.  Was so grateful to have that $45.00 I about cried.  lol   I'm tired.  I'd like to go back to bed.   And just would like to say one more time for the record books ..... old lady bingo players can be BITCHES! Smiley

The thermostat for the trailer arrived yesterday and Dave installed it immediately.  And as of this morning the refrigerator works!  YAY!  So it looks like MAYBE JUST MAYBE we will be able to get out of here sometime this weekend.  I'm actually feeling the anxiousness in the body so I know its going to happen soon.  I can't wait.

So today will be spent getting some stuff together and setting it aside so that as soon as Dave says "load her up" ...... I'll be loading her up ......

The dogs have been really funny as the trailer has started to look more like a trailer again.  Maybe they can sense our anxiousness.  Joe especially ..... once the trailer door opens for Dave to be working he is in it.  And won't come out.  I think he is making sure we don't leave him behind.  They know the trailer means river ..... and that means: lizard hunts, swimming, stick chasing, sleeping in the warm sun on the beach, chasing squirrels ...... and fish ..... and water skippers ..... oh my ..... so much to do for a dog.  They love their time down there.

We have managed to get rid of the majority of the earwigs from the garden.  We now have five very happy healthy artichokes growing like crazy.  The strawberries are sweet and juicy and in abundance.  The raspberries are turning a beautiful red and will soon be devoured ..... we have so many this year ..... its crazy.  The first zucchini will more than likely be picked today and eaten with dinner.  The tomatoes are small but in a couple weeks ..... oh, yum ..... can't wait.  My peppers are coming on like gangbusters and Dave picked the first one this morning.  We also have a water snake living .... well, everywhere.  He was in the fishpond the other day enjoying a tadpole or two ..... then this morning he was enjoying his cool summer morning in the strawberries.  He keeps startling me ...... I have no fear of water snakes ..... but when you don't know they are there ...... SHIT!

Mom is now hooked up to Lifeline and Dave and I can leave without too much worry or guilt.  I was gone when they came yesterday but Dave made sure mom understood how to use and when to use.  The biggest problem we are having now is just getting her to understand she wears this thing 24/7.  Even in the shower.  Its a button that she wears around her neck.  Last night she was worried it didn't go with her shirt.  "Mom, we are not making a fashion statement here."  She just grunted in disgust.  ***sigh***

Posting another slideshow of the trailer and other stuff ..... just wish we had taken one of the double sink and stove / oven ...... it's really nice ...... didn't realize till I started to put this together we neglected the front inside of the trailer ..... oh well.

I hope everyone's Tuesday is a good one.  Peace y'all ......

J.
