What the Gay Brain Looks Like

This article raises some questions and issues with me.

First off, I have in my archives about the 'fact' that we all start off as female, and that it would 'seem' that men are female but have been modified for reproductive purposes to be male by 'nature' or 'Source' . Instead of the notion that women are 'men' with wombs, that just maybe  that men are women without wombs. And in my mind tends to lean to the notion that our Source might me Fe/male. This research shows me that just possible that Gays especially men have  just not had as much of what ever it is that happens during the change from female to males in the wombs and they are closer to their beginnings and just may that this is a normal process for this group of people, that instead of being thought of as abnormal. Just maybe there are normally many groups of people with many kinds of sexual orientation?

Second, if this is true, and I have read other such research that came to the same possible conclusion that just maybe gay and lesbian people are born that way and that it is not a choice but a  normal sexual orientation.

Third if this is so, then to have religions call it a 'sin' just might be wrong?

Just something to think about.

blessed be

What the Gay Brain Looks Like

Michael Prince / Corbis

What makes people gay? Biologists may never get a complete answer to that question, but researchers in Sweden have found one more sign that the answer lies in the structure of the brain....

Scientists at the Karolinska Institute studied brain scans of 90 gay and straight men and women, and found that the size of the two symmetrical halves of the brains of gay men more closely resembled those of straight women than they did straight men. In heterosexual women, the two halves of the brain are more or less the same size. In heterosexual men, the right hemisphere is slightly larger. Scans of the brains of gay men in the study, however, showed that their hemispheres were relatively symmetrical, like those of straight women, while the brains of homosexual women were asymmetrical like those of straight men. The number of nerves connecting the two sides of the brains of gay men were also more like the number in heterosexual women than in straight men.

Just what these brain differences mean is still not clear. Ever since 1991, when Simon LeVay first documented differences in the hypothalamus of gay and straight men, researchers have been struggling to understand what causes these differences to occur. Until now, the brain regions that scientists have come to believe play a role in sexual orientation have been related to either reproduction or sexuality. The Swedish study, however, is the first to find differences in parts of the brain not normally involved in reproduction — the denser network of nerve connections, for example, was found in the amygdala, known as the emotional center of the brain. "The big question has always been, if the brains of gay men are different, or feminized, as earlier research suggests," says Dr. Eric Vilain, professor of human genetics at University of California Los Angeles, "then is it just limited to sexual preference or are there other regions that are gender atypical in gay males? For the first time, in this study it looks like there are regions of the brain not directly involved in sexuality that seem to be feminized in gay males."

Vilain, who studies the genetic factors behind sexuality and sexual orientation, notes that it may turn out that the brains of gay men possess only some 'feminized' structures, while retaining some masculine ones, and this is reflected in how they act on their sexuality. "We know from studies that men, regardless of their sexual orientation, retain masculine characteristics when it comes to their sexual behavior," he says. Both gay and straight men, for example, tend to prefer younger partners, in contrast to women, who gravitate toward older partners. Most men are also more likely than women to engage in casual sex, and to be aroused by visual stimuli. "So I expect that some regions of the brain will remain masculine even in gay men," says Vilain. For something as complex as sexual orientation, it's no surprise that everything from genes to gender to environment may play a role in ultimately determining your perfect partner.

This Blog
This blog was created by Megan and Nirzari. We plan to use this blog to document our encounters with Indian culture both in India and outside of India. This summer, Nirzari will be in India for two months and will blog/journal her stay. Megan, while not going to India this summer, will be researching Indian culture. This blog will serve as a compilation of our endeavors. This blog isn't all about historical research or anything of that sort. Instead, it is just about what we find, what we want, and our learning experiences. While Nirzari needs to practice her Gujarati alphabit, geography, and history, Megan needs to learn both Gujarati and Hindi words, research Indian history, and prepare for future journeys to India. Also, the title of our blog came from the one Indian food that we always make at Nirzari's house as well as the Hindi word for friend/buddy. The best Roti we ever made was created this past weekend. It was both flat, round, and not burnt. We will probably have a video of us making a roti  up pretty soon. Megan is always in charge of shaping the Roti, while Nirzari always deals with the stove part of the process.

Diabetics: Dayumed if we eat Sugar and Dayumed if we eat Fake Sugar!

Artificial sweetener linked to weight gain

Rats fed food with saccharin added more body fat, researchers found

WASHINGTON - Using an artificial, no-calorie sweetener rather than sugar may make it tougher, not easier, to lose weight, U.S. researchers said Sunday.

Scientists at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, studied rats that were fed food with the artificial sweetener saccharin and rats fed food with glucose, a natural sugar.

In comparison to rats given yogurt sweetened with glucose, those that ate yogurt sweetened with saccharin went on to consume more calories and put on more weight and body fat.

The researchers said sweet foods may prompt the body to get ready to take in a lot of calories, but when sweetness in the form of artificial sweeteners is not followed by a large amount of calories, the body gets confused, which may lead to eating more or expending less energy than normal.

"The data clearly indicate that consuming a food sweetened with no-calorie saccharin can lead to greater body-weight gain and adiposity than would consuming the same food sweetened with high-calorie sugar," Purdue researchers Susan Swithers and Terry Davidson wrote in the journal Behavioral Neuroscience, published by the American Psychological Association.

"Such an outcome may seem counterintuitive, if not an anathema, to human clinical researchers and health care practitioners who have long recommended the use of low- and no-calorie sweeteners as a means of weight control."

Other artificial sweeteners such as aspartame that also taste sweet but do not lead to the delivery of calories may have similar effects, the researchers said.

"Animals may use sweet taste to predict the caloric contents of food. Eating sweet noncaloric substances may degrade this predictive relationship," the researchers wrote.

"With the growing use of noncaloric sweeteners in the current food environment, millions of people are being exposed to sweet tastes that are not associated with caloric or nutritive consequences," the researchers added.

The research was the latest to examine the question of whether artificial sweeteners -- used in many soft drinks and other foods — help or thwart those trying to lose weight. Various studies have offered mixed results.

Industry responds

The new research drew criticism from the food industry.

"This study oversimplifies the causes of obesity," Beth Hubrich, a dietitian with the Calorie Control Council, an industry association representing companies that make low- and reduced-calorie foods and beverages, said in a statement.

"The causes of obesity are multi-factorial. Although surveys have shown that there has been an increase in the use of 'sugar-free' foods over the years, portion sizes of foods have also increased, physical activity has decreased and overall calorie intake has increased," Hubrich added.

Nazi Concentration Camps

Sachsenhausen

"Oranienburg"

    Concentration Camp

Prisoners return from forced labor to Sachsenhausen

The Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp was built in the summer of 1936 by concentration camp prisoners from the Emsland camps. Just north of Berlin, Sachsenhausen was one of the most notorious death camps of the Nazi empire and was liberated by Allied troops in 1945.

The camp is sometimes referred to as Sachsenhausen-Oranienburg. The name "Sachsen Hausen" means "Saxon's Houses" when translated to English.

Sachsenhausen was established in 1936 soon after Heinrich Himmler 'Reichsführer SS' was appointed to the post of 'head of the German police'.

The camp was located at the edge of Berlin, which gave it a position among the German concentration camps: the administrative centre of all concentration camps was located in Oranienburg, and Sachsenhausen became a training centre for SS officers (who would often be sent to oversee other camps afterwards).

The camp was commanded by a number of notable SS officers, some who later commanded Auschwitz and Majdanek in Poland, and some who were some of the most brutal and infamous killers, such as Kramer, Palitzsch, Schwarzhuber who were at Auschwitz, Suhren at Ravensbruck and Graetschus and Niemann who both served at both Belzec and Sobibor death camps:

  • Michael Lippert (1936)

  • Hans Hellwig (1937 -1938)

  • Karl Koch (1936 -1937)

  • Herman Baranowski (1938 -1940)

  • Hans Loritz (1940 -1942)

  • Walter Eisfeld (1938 -1939)

  • Rudolf Hoess (1938 -1940)

  • Anton Kaindl  (1942)

Other notable SS men who also served at Sachsenhausen and other camps were:

."You know... I don't think breaking up will fix what you've done to me."

.So, in case you were somehow unaware (which I'm not sure how it's possible, but whatever...) I have a deadly fear of sexually transmitted diseases (Notice how I call them diseases? That's because it fucking pisses me off to say they're all infections... because they're not. They're diseases.). Sigh... Anyway, it's discoveries like this that make me a little less afraid of standing next to people on the metro: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/01/10/AR2008011003548.html

.In case you didn't go through the link, I'll just let you know how amazing this discovery is. A research team has now pinpointed 270 of the proteins HIV needs to continue it's process of rape and pillage. Over 200 of them were not previously known to play a part in HIV's viking-esque journeys through the body. Current drugs work by interrupting one of HIV's four main steps in its so-called "life cycle." This is a huge step. "'This is likely destined to be one of the best papers on HIV for this coming decade,' said Robert C. Gallo, co-discoverer of the AIDS virus." (WashingtonPost.com)

.This is truly amazing. I always knew they would come up with a vaccine, but that can only stop one from contracting it. I never expected a possible cure. This discovery is not everything there is to know about HIV, but it's an enormous leap in the right direction. Maybe Africa is safe at last, kids. Maybe we're all safe.
