Regatta @ MindSay
My doubles partner and I got 4th, behind 2 of our boats, and one Minneapolis. Duluth ate our wake. And we'd only practiced 3 times, in mostly shitty weather.
My four was beating our A boat up until the last 300 meters of the race, and we were consistent the entire way through. and they didn't pass us until 100 meters. And we had the heavier boat(a bowloader) and the heavier coxswain. Go figure.
Our eight kicked ass, although I wasn't in that race. It was a fantastic weekend. I feel super happy.
I got up this morning and went for a bike ride. There was a collegiate rowing regatta at the marina and the Canes rowing team was in town so I thought it would be a good idea to get a little exercise in and watch some of the events.
I started out at the farthest part of the bike trail you can go and rode toward the marina. I was going downhill at 7:45 a.m. with a smile on my face. I love to ride! But I knew coming back it was going to be tough because I have not done a hill yet since I bought the bike. Anyway, after the nice little hill the trail flattened out and I rode about a mile and a half to where all the college teams were getting ready. Miami. Michigan. Ohio State. Notre Dame. Virginia. Tennessee. Michigan State. Duke. North Carolina. Cincinatti. Clemson. Central Florida. Thats all of the teams I can remember but there are many more than that. Some of the teams would sing a battle song before the picked up the boat to move it to the dock. I rode around the area several times watchin what all was going on and I noticed that this was an all girls meet! I saw this one girl from Michigan and wow was she hot! Cute and a nice body as well. Don't get me wrong, I know she is someones daughter but she was hot. One thing about women rowers, a lot of them are big girls. I don't mean fat, although some of them are, I mean girls over 6 feet tall.
So while circling around it started to sprinkle. I thought a little rain never hurt anybody so I didn't pay much attention to it. Around 8:30 the teams started pulling out to row down to the starting line. I have wanted to see a start so I thought I would head that way. I got about a mile down to the start line and it started to pour. So I waited under a tree for a while and then headed back to a canopy to sit out the rain. There I met this guy from Michigan who said his daughter was on the novice rowing team. I thought "how nice, I might have been checking out this guys daughter." He was pretty cool, though, and gave me some insight on rowing. Like the fact that colleges like taller girls as rowers for leverage and that his daughter, although a high school singles national champion is really to small to be on the varsity squad. She is only 5'6". So that might have been his daughter I was checking out after all. So needless to say I didn't mention anything about the fact that there are alot of hot college chics in town for the weekend. And when these two ladies came jogging by that were in their late 40's and he made a comment about them being good lookingI knew that I should start turning my eyes in a different direction. But thats a story for another day. So we watched a couple of races until the rain quit. I decided to head back. I wished the guy and his daughter good luck and that I may be back tomorrow.
So I headed back to the starting line which was about a 1/4 mile from my car. It was pretty neat to watch the start of a race so close and those girls can make those boats move! You could hear them shouting in cadence. Other teams were cheering for them as they raced. I realized then that I still miss competition. So after that I rode around for a bit more and then headed back to the car.
Up ahead I could see the hill. I could hear "When I'm Gone" playing in my mind so I switched the bike into the granny gears and to the hill I went. I cannot tell you how much fun that was. When I made it to my car, I was gasping for breath and the car looked like an ambulance to me. I fixed the bike up on the rack and drove home. When I took my first step out of the car, my legs felt like jello. Wow that a fun thing to do in the morning. The meet will end tomorrow morning so I plan on getting up and doing it again. I can't wait.
