My Office Depot Rant Or What Is My Time Worth?

file cabinet I had been looking for a two-drawer metal filing cabinet, but all ones I saw were $50 to $70 - too much for a piece of crappy office furniture. I'd do better getting a used one at a thrift store.

Then I saw Office Depot was advertising a two-drawer Office Depot Value™ Brand 2-Drawer File With Caster Kit available in silver, putty, charcoal and stone for $29.99.

I was willing to pay $30, but didn't want to drive all the way into town and back - an hour's trip including shopping time. Since Office Depot offers free shipping on purchases over $50, I went online. Odd thing was that while I could find the product, it wasn't listed for the price on the flier. I wondered if it was an in-store special.

Off to Office Depot I Go

Even though I suspected the sale flier had a misprint, wasn't it within my rights to ask for the advertised price? Since I already had to drive part way to the store to drop the kids off at karate, I thought it was worth my time to go by and check it out.

When I got there, the young man in the furniture section couldn't find the file cabinet on the floor. When he looked it up in the computer, he didn't see it listed at the sale price. (I had brought the flier with me.) He got his manager who told me there was only one left in the back. He reluctantly gave it to me for the price on the flier even though he pointed out that the flier was incorrect.

Not the Bargain I Hoped for

I added a few other things to my cart, and checked out using a $10 off coupon I had as an Office Depot rewards member. I drove home thrilled to get a file cabinet for $20 that would normally go for $70 full price.

A couple of days later I unpacked the file. It was damaged! Not only was I ticked off, but I had a dilemma to deal with. Should I be happy with a banged up bargain? Or should I take more time out of my busy schedule to return it? CRAP!

Putting a Price Tag On My Time

A friend of mine, Millionaire Mommy Next Door, tells you to put a price tag on your time.

So far I had expended an hour's worth of time to save $50. In my freelance writing business, I aim for a $20 per hour minimum net. So I did pretty well there. But if I returned it, I would lose money:

  • 1 hour to get the original file - $20
  • 1 hour to return it - $20
  • 1 hour to get a new one from a rain check (there were no more in the store) - $20

TOTAL = $60 worth of writing time to save $50 - NOT WORTH IT!

I ended up keeping the cabinet. It was functional, and the damage wasn't noticeable since it's in the closet. I'm still pissed about it though.

What would you have done, kept it figuring you took advantage of a mistake and got a pretty good deal? Or would you have returned it, insisting on a perfect cabinet at the flier's price?

Barely Breathing

I know what you're doing, I see it all too clear
I only taste the saline when I kiss away your tears
You really had me going wishing on a star
But the black holes that surround you are heavier by far
I belived in your confusion, you were so completely torn
Well it must of been that yesterday was the day that I was born
There's not much to examine, there's nothing left to hide
You really can be serious if you have to ask me why
I say goodbye...

'Cause I am barely breathing
And I can't find the air
I don't know who I'm kidding
Imagining you care
And I could stand here waiting
A fool for another day
But I don't suppose it's worth the price, worth the price
The price that I would pay

Everyone keeps asking, what's it all about?
I used to be so certain and I can't figure out?
What is this attraction? I only feel the pain
There's nothing left to reason and only you to blame
Will it ever change?

'Cause I am barely breathing
And I can't find the air
I don't know who I'm kidding
Imagining you care
And I could stand here waiting
A fool for another day
But I don't suppose it's worth the price, worth the price
The price that I would pay
But I'm thinking it over anyway...

I've come to find
I may never know
Your changing mind
Is it friend or foe?

I rise above
Or sink below
With every time
You come and go
Please don't come and go

'Cause I am barely breathing
And I can't find the air
I don't know who I'm kidding
Imagining you care
And I could stand here waiting
A fool for another day
But I don't suppose it's worth the price, worth to price
The price that I would pay
But I'm thinking it over anyway...

(no subject)
This is my first post, I'm glad to be here at mindsay, all my friends encouraged me to get a blog..  I'm married, have kids and hate the price of gas, but even more that that, I hate the price of produce.  Groceries ahve gotter more expensive this week and the storm damaged crops and the price of fuel is going to come back to the consumers, thats right, us.  Our dollar isn't going to go as far as it did last week, and it doesn't look like it is going to get any better anytime soon.  So now the thing to do is to figure out how to feed the family more economically.  Looks like alot of rice for us, and whatever I can find at our local dented can store.  Its amazzing what I can find there.  I stop in once a week, and stock up on whatever they have that we use.  While buying baby food, I could get it there at half the reg price, so always stocked up, cause if I didn't, someone else would and I would miss out on the bargain.  Our garden is providing a lot of veggies for us right now.  I weish we had been able to have a larger garden as we arn't able to do much canning and freezing.  But at least we have eaten well this summer and even now the garden is still producing well. we pack school lunches instead of buying them, insuring a proper diet and being a bit more affordable, also reducing snacks.   Lock in your heating fuel prices if you still can.  This should save a huge amount of money this winter, and maybe keep the house a few degrees cooler.  Wear some extra layers.  Time spent in the car is decreasing, for obvious reasons, casual trips are being canceled, we will go if an emergency, but not simply for pleasure.  Trips to the big city will be planned to get as much done as possible, reducing the number of times we go there each month, and oh no, A may have to find a local mechanic.  Ive been driving to our mechanic form our last location 2 hours away for automobile maintance, because I trust him, he has taken care of my cars for 10 years now.  But thats along way to go for an oil change.  we will be making some changes with the way we celebrate holidays too, no fancy meals for a bit, and christmas is going to be differant here in our home this year.  I think we will be shopping for families effected by Katrina instead of for our kids.  and you never know, if the Grandparents insist on shopping for the kids, their gifts may well get donated.  We'd appreciate all economic tips that you would like to share.

The Price is Right, Top 10 Tv shows, lazy weekend

Well it is Monday morning and the owner is at work.  I usually have a hard time getting a chance to type on the weekends being that she is always around.  On Friday she came home from work and was there about 1 hour.  Then got all dressed up and didn't come home until 2 am and she was barely walking.  She literally tripped over her own feet.  And then she slept with her shoes on.  Humans, are strange.  On Saturday she was useless, she laid on the couch.  I enjoyed it however, cause I got extra loving.  By Sunday, she was back to normal.  Doing laundry, cleaning and the typical way she spends her weekend.  She did hang new curtains in our bedroom.  I like them, it makes the room darker.  I can sleep better during the day when there is not a lot of sunlight.  So I was able to sleep in this morning.

She fed me canned food this morning that was awful.  I attacked her feet as she walked through the house but she didn't get the point.  She did give me treats however.  So I suppose I can eat the dreaded dry food until dinner.  This morning she left the TV on a different channel rather than a music channel.  The Price is Right is coming on and it is a great show.  Possibly on my Top 10 list.

Top ten best shows

10.  Anything on the Animal Channel

9.  Family Fued

8.  All My Children (Don't really like it..but it is on all the time.  Damn, I get sucked in)

7.  Jeopardy

5. Family Guy (the drunk dog is great)

4.  The Price if Right (get em, bob)

3.  Friends  (How u doing?)
