Je suis......... blah blah blah
I found a really good French class online:
http://feeds.feedburner.com/coffeebreakfrench

I am an ok French speaker. Actually, I speak like a four year old without much vocab. I tried Pimsleur and that worked well, but after Disc One I was too lazy to find the following lessons at my library. And I learn so much from French movies, but it's not really a class, so there is a point where everything kind of drops off.

I hope to continue this French class. There are only 15 lessons so far, so I hope they don't give up on me. The rest of the French lessons online were all in French so I didn't know how I could learn if I didn't know everything they were saying.

Crossing my fingers, I hope to go to France next year. Pls. pls pls pls pls. And I want to be prepared so I can hopefully interact more.

Oh, and the cute thing is that the people teaching it are SCOTTISH. Ha ha ha. I love it.

Seven Symptoms That You Are Getting Into A Depression

There are lots of reasons for a person to get depressed but you can easily identify the symptoms of depression and help the person to overcome it. Few symptoms are easily identifiable .The symptoms like Over weight or loss of weight, insomnia or excessive sleep can be the symptoms of depression. Read through. This article cover

  • What is depression?
  • What makes someone clinically depressed?
  • Manic depression symptoms and other types

Feeling sad or "down" for a few days is not the same as exhibiting symptoms of depression. A clinical case of depression symptoms as outlined in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) is a disorder with both physical and mental characteristics that negatively disrupts an individual's ability to function day to day in social and work environments. According to the DSM, real depression is a condition of this nature that lasts for more than two weeks.

It is estimated that at any one time, some 16% of the population of the United States is clinically depressed. The condition is actually the leading cause of disability in this nation. By 2020, statistics gathered by the World Health Organization suggest that depression will be the second major cause of disability in the world.

What Makes Someone Clinically Depressed?

The DSM lays out a stepped approach to diagnosing and evaluating clinical depression. First one of two clinical depression symptoms must be present, either a depressed mood or a loss of interest or pleasure. If either of those major depression symptoms is present, the patient must also exhibit four of the following symptoms.

People who are depressed are often overwhelmed by sadness or fear and at times feel incapable of experiencing emotion. Another major symptom is loss of interest or pleasure in an activity or pastime that was previously a source of considerable engagement.

Marked weight gain or loss is an indicator as is a change in sleep patterns to either extreme - insomnia or excessive sleep. Restlessness, slowed movements, and mental or physical fatigue may also indicate depression.

Other feelings that may be present include guilt, helplessness, hopelessness, anxiety, fear, and decreased self esteem. People who are depressed have trouble concentrating and find themselves struggling to think clearly. They will also have memory issues. Additionally, individuals suffering from depression entertain thoughts of self-harm in the form of either self-mutilation (cutting for instance) or suicide.

If the patient in question is a child, the symptoms of depression may include recurrent nightmares, a loss of appetite, and problems in school with learning or discipline that were not previously present. Children will also exhibit marked changes in behavior. They may become withdrawn or exhibit uncharacteristic social aggression.

In adults it is not uncommon for people who are depressed to abuse alcohol, drugs (or both), and to engage in excessive behavior, perhaps developing an eating disorder or a sexual addiction. The Beck Depression Inventory, a depression symptoms test, uses twenty-one multiple choice questions to evaluate a potential case of depression and is considered to be an excellent diagnostic tool.

Free Books & Podcasts on the Internet
Living in a country where few people speak and read English fluently, it can be difficult to find books, radio & TV programs in English for entertainment. (DVDs in English are found on every street corner.)

I'm always looking for sources on the Internet. (The Internet really is a lifesaver.) E-books are great, but can be expensive and difficult to read. I've amassed a nice collection of them, however, and was very pleased to find an interesting collection of books available at Creative Commons for download. These are books that are available for purchase in print form, but for reasons particular to each book & author, PDF formats are also available for free. The books are mostly non-fiction and are mainly about information science, copyright issues and computers, so they may not have a wide appeal, but for me, as a library & information science major, they are fascinating. There are also a few science fiction books available. The important thing for me is that they are available for free and are legal. One sci-fi author, Cory Doctorow has even allowed the printing and sale of his books in countries recognized by the World Bank as low-income countries. (With no royalties required for himself.)

There are other places on the Internet where e-books are available for free, like Project Gutenberg. Just search google for ebooks and you will find a huge selection, classics for free, and more modern texts for charges.

If you enjoy radio programs or listening to spoken word programs, there is also a wealth of podcasts available on the Internet, in a huge variety of topics and subjects. Open Culture is a website that sorts through all kinds of media available on the Internet to find high quality sources. They have lists of podcasts from major radio and news networks, smaller companies and even university courses. (A podcast is an audio file and may consist of interviews, music, speeches, spoken word, etc.) I highly recommend their list of Arts & Culture and University podcasts. I use itunes to download and listen to the files, but they can also be downloaded via conventional means and opened with any mp3 player.

If you enjoy audiobooks, LibriVox has collections of audio versions of books in the public domain (meaning you can download them for free). Open Culture also has links to other similar sites.

And lastly, I'd like to recommend a website that features translations of short stories and works by international authors that may otherwise be inaccessible to English speaking readers. Words Without Borders seeks to enrich inter-cultural relations and enhance tolerance through literature and story-telling. They offer full text stories without charge.

For expats who are limited on weight and cannot tote around large volumes of reading material, the Internet truly is a rich resource.

[nokia-dokey]
Those of you who bravely listen to my music podcast, The RuckuS know that my favorite podcasting community on the net is PodcastPickle.com.  I'm not alone in thinking this - recently, TIME magazine also dubbed it one of the 50 coolest websites around.

And it just keeps getting cooler.

You see, one of it's fine features for a podcaster like me is of the thousands of casts listed on the site, a Top 100 list appears on the front page of the site.  This list is generated when PodcastPickle members add their favorite podcasts to their Pickle Favorites.  True, it feels good to appear in that list considering all the casts that are out there, but more importantly to me, it helps get my show noticed.  Finding it amidst all the shows out there is quite the challenge without any help one can muster from outside sources.

So what, you say?  What's so great about a Top 100 list?  Well, on top of what I've already shared, I just learned of another way this list may reach many more potential listeners.  Check out this little blurb on the latest Nokia phones.  A quick summary, though, is that it's now possible for owners of these Nokia phones to quickly access the Podcast Pickle Top 100 list and listen right from their phones!

I wanted to share that breaking news with anyone interested.  I wanted to thank those of you who as fans of the show have taken the time to set up accounts at Podcast Pickle and added me to your favorites.  At the time of this post, The RuckuS sits at #67 on the list.  Personally, I'm shocked and flattered that it's even in the Top 100, but I'm also excited at the prospect that a person just browsing podcasts on their cell phone could quite possibly find my little show and quite possibly listen to it.  And who knows?  Maybe they'll even dig it.

If you'd like to listen to my latest episode, [monstrous], you can click here and open up the file right on your PC or Mac or save it to upload to your mp3 player.  If you're so moved, consider checking out PodcastPickle and adding TheRuckuS to your favorites.  But don't do that just for me - there are tons of great casts to check out there by some very creative, talented and innovative people.

Just wanted to share.  Back to your regularly scheduled Mondays, people.

Wiki'd
I whipped up a quick Mindsay Wiki entry for myself. It's pretty much an extended profile that, honestly, probably sums up every post I've ever made here into one wiki entry.

Have at it. If you want to edit it, go for it, the more words the merrier.
