The Effects of being in a Midwest Southern State and having Snow

Well I have finally have felt the effects myself of being in a midwest southern state and having snow.  Actually the kids are feeling the effects also!

Even though we didn't get any snow yesterday, Randy and I thought we better listen to the radio to see if they would cancel school or be a late start.  Up north the misely 4-5 inches we got Saturday wouldn't have affected the schools unless the wind was up and blew drifts.  Down here we knew it would.  A half hour after Randy left for work this morning (yes he is working days until we leave-thus how they screwed his schedule again) it came across the radio:

Guymon area schools:  One hour late start.  Okay no problem they still can ride the bus right!  Also Guymon schools no rural buses!  Oh sooky sooky we have a problem Huston!

See on country roads this wouldn't be a problem up in NE for me.  I just call the school and say I'll have the kdis there but we will be late I have to wait for the snow plows.  And up north the country roads with residents usually have their roads plowed midmorning!  Saturday and yesterday all the roads were plowed but country roads down here in OK.  We found out that most country roads that are NOT paved do NOT get plowed!  Thus enters my problem.  It is one thing to have all wheel or front wheel drive on snow and ice, another thing to have one of these drives on snow that has drifted!  My lil truck can NOT bust through these drifts.  And even though our landlord and Randy can get out, our neighbors with big trucks can get out, those of us with small vechiles with or with out four wheel drive have problems.  Because we can get stuck!

I managed to call secruity at Randy's work and catch him and our landlord walking through it!  Yay now I dont' have to be transferred all over the place!  Randy no rural buses and hour late start.  He goes shit!  Landlord turns around and goes what's wrong?  (He has been really nice and told Randy sorry about what he did with me that day-and Randy told him you don't say sorry to me you have the balls to go say sorry to her)  Randy tells him to wait a minute and then tells me just call them in and tell them there is now way you can get that truck of yours out of the drive or off the country road.  You will go straight into a drift because the wind is up and you will get stuck in a heart beat.  Landlord is in the background going you tell her not to take that lil truck of her's anywhere she doens't need to get into an accident with those kids a half mile from the hiway!  If the school is ging to get pissy about those kids of hers not being at school today I will cover for you and you can ran home and take them.

But this presents another problem!  Landlord said if the run no rural buses in the morning they don't run rural buses in the afternoon.  There is no gaurentee that the wind will let down and stop drifting so I am back to how am I going to get the kids.  Not to mention Randy works till 8 tonight and I will def ran out of cigs by that time!

I hate living in the south midwest states.  They shut down for the minor things and dont' take care of their rural residents very well!  Oh well!  At least back home I know my drive will be plowed the same day a snow storm comes through!  My uncle keeps one of his tractors at his house during the winter to dig a lot of our hiway's residents out since the majority of them can't with their large drives and lanes!  And I will just be down the drive from them.  I will get dug out before even my parents now!  :D

Keep your hand on that plow, hold on...
Oh Lord, Oh Lord, keep your hand on that plow, hold on.
Well, I never been to heaven
But I've been told streets up there
Are lined with gold
Keep your hand on that plow, hold on...

In some ways it is hard to imagine it to be so, but it happens to be. What is it that has me so much in a state of awe - the jaw-dropping sort?

Well, I honestly feel good about the direction my life is heading. I know that more than likely you will be saying unto me, "But Mr. Saul or Mr. Crust whomever you happen to be at the moment, you usually write of gloom and despair and agony on me. How can this be? What has changed your whole dire outlook on the world?"

And I shall reply unto thee and thine, ya know what? I ain't honestly gots me a clue, but nonetheless it is so and so it shall be though it does seem a bit weird...

And with that duly noted in the paragraph that appears above, I would just like to say that this is Blog entry 201. Two-hundred on the nose was rather appropriate for I am the Cap'n of the Loyal Order of .-PiRaTeSMiLieS and so I shall remain for all eternity for I be not a slimy sea slug, I be not a land-lubber, I be a pirate, bay-bee....

This is the Word of the AntiCrust...

Praise be ye who Read the Word...

Wow, look at this!

This is what they call lake effect snow. I'm not exactly sure what it is, but it has something to do with the lake waters getting so warm in the summer that it can't cool off like it should for the winter. We had a very, very warm summer. If we had this kind of snow in North Carolina we'd be snowed in for weeks, there would be 200 or more wrecks, and there would be no bread or milk to be found in the entire state. haha

Before (Sunday)

During (Sunday, a couple hours after the first pic was taken!)

You can't see it in the pic, but the kids had a big Tonka Dump Truck they were filling with snow. Are my kids the only ones who play with sand toys in the snow?

After (and this is after a neighbor had come through and plowed the snow once)

Look how high the snow was on my van this morning! We had to get a picture of that!

If we hadn't opened the back door several times and swept the snow off the porch it would have been half way up the door. When I took the pics where it was still snowing, I opened the door, and the door swept away snow with it. This is the most snow I have ever seen at one time. It was really awesome. Thank goodness for a neighbor who has a plow on the front of his quad. We barely know him, but as soon as he met my husband he started plowing our driveway whenever he does his. He says he does it for fun. I plan to go to the store today and get stuff to make cookies and maybe some banana bread to take to him and his family. Dale also had the idea of buying a 5 gallon gas can, filling it up and taking that as well, as a thank you. The man, I have no idea what his name is as I have not yet met him, does this for several neighbors. Oh, and we might be getting more of this heavy snow tomorrow. Wish I could also show you the video I took of it!

The crazy school officials called a 1 hour delay for school yesterday. After I waited on the porch until I thought I would see buses coming I went in to see what time it was. The delay was announced 15 minutes before school was supposed to start! An hour later I got the kids ready again, and we stepped out the porch, played in the snow a bit, and I asked if the kids wanted to stay home. Looking out at how hard it was still snowing I was pretty sure school would have an early dismissal anyway. The kids decided they wanted to stay home, of course, and about 20 minutes after school started, the news announced they were sending the kids home early. That was an all around waste of gas for the buses. Dale says they did it because the schools get money from the state for everyday they have children attending. It makes a certain amount of sense, but to endanger the lives of the children who live out in the country where the roads are not plowed as often, just to collect some money was a bit stupid. We only live about 10 blocks from the school (and yes, my kids still actually ride the bus) so I wasn't worried about the bus getting in an accident. Our stop is the last one. The kids are in school today, and I may venture out to the store. However, that means I have to shovel the bottom of the driveway thanks to the plows (there's at least 18 inches down there). Dale took the truck and it will drive right over that. If I don't shovel, my van won't make it back up the driveway. So, I better walk the dogs, feed them, and get moving. :)
