This is where i become humble and no longer know, from the mind of business I want to tell myself that i should formulate a plan. Thats right a plan that is simple, measurable, realistic, and so on! This all makes since in a part of my brain, but then I wake up and step outside to reality that scream at me, "you can't plan for me!." So now i sit and can only think to myself that reality speaks the truth,
I can't plan for unexpected happenings, but more importantly I have to know that this is not my plan to work, but rather I need to seek to understand the intricacies that is wanted out of my life. This is not something that you ask your parents about, or look to your best friend for the golden answer. It is a diamond that is rough, and the only way that the clarity comes is a consistent want and need to be a apart of the plan that is setting up your life.
I want this! I will do this, and give it whatever it takes. There will be no plan, but there will be actions that happen every day, and hour that will deliver the answers that i look for, deserve!
I am going all in! Over the last few days I've been going from dream stage to business stage with my Photography. I've decided to call my business, Desired Focus Wedding Photography. Motto: ((still working on wording (please help me) but here's my heart): Focusing on your desires to enjoy for a lifetime.
I plan on sending my $50 for my business name after I start making money and if I find out that I need to get some licenses that I'm not too sure about, I'll save for that.
I plan to get a credit card for the business for print orders and other distance purchases (over the internet or phone) but I will only use it when I have the money for it. I do not want to start in debt. (I have no idea of how the business will do...I haven't done any market research about the need in my community and surrounding cities (I don't even know how to go about doing that? Any pointers, anyone?), I don't know if I'll get enough Weddings and Engagement sessions to pay for the credit card bill each month, our economy is slow in my city and some may view my service as a luxury and not a need, and there are several good Photographers in town who already have amazing portfolios.) I'm hoping friends that have amazing cameras will be generous enough to lend me their cameras for a few Saturdays before I can afford my own. I've been also thinking that I could rent one, if I discover that is too much to ask of a friend. (Do you think that's too much to ask? I could break it on accident and I have no way of paying for it unless I decide to use my credit card to buy them a new one.)
My hope is that friends, especially photography and media ones will be generous and lend it to me a few times. Then I can just buy what I need as I go.
I've looked on-line to see if I can post ads for free. I found one at MamaSource and one at GoogleMaps and one at an on-line area Cafe. I've been like a kid waiting for a just planted seed to grow as I check my e-mail. In my ads to attract business, I clearly state that I am offering discounted prices ($300-500) more than half off what some photographer's start at ($1100) because I want to create my portfolio. If they want to get to know me and see if they love my style of photography, I can give them a free Engagement session with the "negatives" included! Again they would be helping me by developing my portfolio.
I've searched for inspiration on-line too...please visit jessicaclaire.net. She is awesome! At first, I felt intimidated when I viewed her work, then she told us the secret on her FAQs. She showed a picture before she used Photoshop and after. The first one, looked like my work. Great composition but lacking vibrancy. The second looked clear, vibrant and perfectly lit. I felt empowered and inspired! She also has links to other cool websites that help Photographers in business. I found a nice website with quality prints and prices by looking at her [b]ecker link. It's whcc.com.
I've looked into the legal aspects and was relieved that it wasn't complicated at all!
Because my business does not need office/studo space other than my desk (I shoot at weddings and anywhere the couples desire), does not need everything right away, doesn't require much post shoot work, I think I can handle it well.
I plan to use Saturdays to meet with people, shoot Weddings and Engagement sessions and edit my work before sending it to the printers. If I decide to do wedding books then I will create a couple templates that couples can choose from so that all I need to do is add pictures and send my work to the printers that evening. My hope is that my business will fulfill my longing to use and work on my photo skills, meet people, enjoy beautiful surroundings and have money to pay bills, ENJOY, save and be able to bless others with.
Today, I even called my brother who just graduated from a media related school and asked about websites. He told me some things that made it sound acheivable to have my own website that I could update myself everyweek with wedding pics and even blog.
I've already found my first couple! We had the greatest conversation about how she met her fiance and from what she said about some of their first experiences together, we can create some fun engagement pictures. She said that for their first dates they would walked along side a river. She also said that her fiance tested her to see if she was too "prissified" by giving her cheese, after he took a bite. She took the bite after him and he fell in love. I can imagine them caressing along side the river, feeding each other cheese! Or walking down the path together, etc. I hope that the trees will bloom with flowers before we take the pics in a month or so. We are in the process of picking a good date for this session.
That's about as much as I've done...let me know about anything I should consider. Thanks.
