A Peridot is a beautiful olive green stone. It is the best known gem variety of mineral olivine, a species name for a series of magnesium-iron rich silicate minerals. Much less expensive than green tourmaline, Peridot is typically found in volcanic rock. This diverse green gemstone has occasionally been found in meteorites, and enjoys the unique distinction of being the only precious gem knows to exist in outer space.
Origin of Peridot
Peridot is an ancient and yet a very popular gemstone in today’s time. It is so old that it can be found even in Egyptian jewelry from the early second millennium BC. The stones used in those days came from an occurrence on a little volcanic island in the Red Sea, about 70 km off the Egyptian coast, which was rediscovered only around 1900 and has been completely exploited since. Peridot, however, is also quite a modern stone. Only a few years ago Peridot occurrences were discovered in the Cashmere region and the stones from there display a unique color and transparency. The stones are such that the image of it, which was somewhat dulled over the ages, has received an efficient polishing here.
In fact, the ancient Romans were quite fond of the gemstone and coveted the brilliant green sparkle, which does not change in artificial light. They named the stone “Evening Emerald”. Peridot is also found in Europe in many medieval churches decorating several treasures, like, for instance, the Cologne Cathedral.

According to legends, Peridot has many mystical properties. Peridot is used to help dreams materialize. It also symbolizes fame, dignity and protection. Pirates favored peridot to protect them against evil. When the peridot is set in gold it protects the wearer from terrors of the night.
