Pan's Labyrinth: Have you seen it yet?

I can't remember the last time I actually made a blogging of my life...so hopefully this one will fulfill my lack of entries.

Holy Crap did I watch the most amazing movie last night. Pan's Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro was more amazing than my words can even begin to describe. I have to admit I really think he is my favorite directors, and  I also enjoyed The Devil's Backbone which he also directed.

I don't want to give away too much information about the movie, because I'd rather you go and watch it yourself, but maybe a few key details to spark the interest. The setting is Spain 1944; the spanish civil war was coming to a close....but the setting takes place on a farmhouse where spanish soldiers are residing fighting against the guerilla soldiers who did not want the new spain. A mother with child, and her young daughter Ofelia are taken to this farm because the mother has married the captain after the death of her husband.

The young Ofelia, enchanted by magic and fairies, finds a labyrinth that she somehow knew was meant for her. There she meets the Fauna, a mystical creature older than the winds and earth, who tells her of her past, present, and her future to come. It follows along almost like that of a fairytale. But not all fairy tales are filled with happiness....

There are so many things in this movie that will send chills of excitement up your spine, and that I can honestly say is true. It's captivating and bewildering....just like all of del Toro's films.

Plans for tonight? I'm going ice skating in Erie and then possibly getting some food later on....I don't know the exact plans as of yet, but everything sounds fun! If you haven't anything better to do tonight, I highly suggest you go to the theater and watch Pan's Labyrinth, or if you are like me.....download a copy from DC++ or Limewire! :D

Pan's Labyrinth
I saw Pan's Labyrinth this weekend....

I loved the film...it's a fairy tale for adults...somewhat sad and most assuredly dark...but haunting and beautiful.  And I'm a sucker for sub-titled films...

So...with that said....I send you forth into the world with the advice....GO SEE THIS MOVIE...but leave the kiddies at home for it's a bit gruesome and has some very dark themes.

Guillermo Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth haunts me.  A whimsical fairytale set against a horrific background, it is one of the most moving and beautiful movies I've seen in a while.

I find I really connect with this director, because, like me, he has always been fascinated with fairytales - not the watered down versions we know, but the original versions that often have a darker, bloodier edge to them and they play a major role in his works. When you think about it, fairytale and folktale alike have become the precursor and background to horror films.

Pan's Labyrinth is a mix of horror and fantasy. Del Toro uses it as an insight into the human condition, our primal fears and our own capacity to inflict terror.

I am trying to achieve the same thing in my own novel which springs from the seeds of fairytale and myth to birth something beautiful but also dark.  Del Toro is an inspiration. I look forward to exploring his other works.  Do yourself a favour and see Pan's Labyrinth!
