This afternoon I went out shopping at a two national chain craft stores which happen to be in the same shopping center. I ended up in the checkout line at both stores behind the same woman. We nodded to each other and I smiled a "Here we go again..." kind of smile. (Checkout at the first store had taken a long time). She offered a faint smile in return, so I didn't say anything - she didn't seem the type.
While she was being rung up, a woman and her tweenage daughter (who was taller than the mom) came in to the store. The mom saw the woman in front of me and says "Hi Doctor!" and the woman in front of me looked up and said a quiet hello. Mom then comments about how she didn't know that Dr. lived in this neighborhood, and Dr. replied that she doesn't - she's just out running errands on her lunch break. And in my world, the conversation should of ended there with a "Well it was good to see you...have a great weekend!" But no...
So Mom goes on to explain that she and daughter have taken the day off because daughter had a doctor's appointment. It turns out that it WAS a cyst after all and they will have to go see an orthopedic surgeon about getting it removed, which of course will mean "another day off!". At this point the daughter physically recoiled, rolled her eyes, and was about to say "Mommmmmm!" (complete with eyes rolling). I felt sorry for the kid. Dr. in front of me looked uncomfortable and embarrassed as well - but sadly, I got the feeling that she got this a lot. Occupational hazard. She softly said "OK." and finished her transaction. Now it wasn't like Mom said hi and then walked over closer to the Dr. she was talking to. She was standing a good 8-9 feet away from where we were - on the other side of the checkout lane and cashier. So it wasn't just me who heard this. It was also the cashier and the three other people in line behind me.
They said goodbyes, Dr. rushed out. Daughter dragged Mom over to some shiny object and asked her mom if she could get it. Mom said no. And my feeling was after embarrassing her daughter like that the kid deserved the shiny checkout lane tchatchkie that she was asking for.
Now I have been known to get chatty with both strangers and people I know. But if I were to run into my doctor or my kid's doctor outside of the Dr's office, I would make a conscious effort to NOT talk about medical things unless they asked. It's nobody else's business and embarrassing.
I do hope everything goes well medically for the daughter and that it's nothing serious. But still... I shouldn't even know about it to begin with.

Laughed Out Loud
From one of the greatest websites of ALL time ...
Chick: So, I'm up by Bryant Park, and there are all these cop cars lined up, and then one of them decides, 'Okay, time to go!' and he puts his siren on and pulls out, and all the rest of them following, all their sirens going whoop-buppa-whoop-whoop! And then I hear something that sounds like some guy going 'whoop-buppa-whoop-whoop' -- like, he's making siren noises -- and I turn around, and there's this cop... I guess the siren on his cop car wasn't working or something, so he's on the loudspeaker mic yelling, 'Whoop-buppa-whoop-whoop!' as they all zoom off down 42nd Street. It was crazy!

Riding on the Metro
"Did you ever have one of those dreams that sticks with you like all day?"
"ah-huh"
"Girl...did I have one of those!...and it was about Dwayne."
"NO YOU DIDN'T!!!! Did you tell Mark???"
"Nah-uh!"
"So what happened? Girl you better spill it."
"When it started, we were holding each other, like dancing real close and I was nuzzling into his neck. And it felt so right - so perfect. We were at a fancy party with all of his fraternity brothers - not like in college, but like now they were all getting together. I was wearing my strappy black cocktail dress..."
"Ooooooh girl! You look so hot in that dress!"
"I know! And he was all fancy in a tuxedo. And we were dancing, and he was taking me around to talk with his brothers, holding me with his hand on my back. And we were laughing and having a great time. Then he took me out to this little shop and bought me this really expensive gift that I kept telling him I didn't want, but he insisted. But even though I was with him and we were having such a good time and I was so peaceful, and in the back of my mind, I was still thinking about Mark. I knew I was with him now. But Dwayne and I didn't hook up or nothing - we were just happy together like old times were."
"Dwayne's living out in Cali now right?"
"Yeah - I still talk to his sister every now and then"
"You can't tell Mark - he would hit it!"
"Prolly - hey...It's not cheating if it's just a dream right?"
"ah-huh"
