Here is something that just fascinates me when it comes to landscape design elements. Grand plaza water fountains. I am not talking about the small pool fountains you can set on a deck or porch, but the over sized, huge water features that you see in plazas and commercial business spaces. They are magnificent! They feature classic wishing pool basins which sit flat on the ground, I suppose so that people can throw pennies in and make a wish. I'm sure you would not want this to happen in your home but in commercial or professional buildings, usually malls which I so rarely approach, the money is donated to a charity of some sort.

Anyhow. I've seen such water fountains applied in private homes as well. Typically they are used as center pieces for circular driveways or on large expanses of lawn, and they certainly are beautiful.  There is just something about a flat pool basin that just appeals to me. There are many words to describe them and all of the words are large. Magnificent, stunning, GRAND even. Very classy and sophisticated, particularly in my personal opinion if they aren't too ornate. I did see one that was ornate and over the top at an Italian restaurant and it was perfect in this setting, quite European and old world, so I suppose it depends on the surrounding style!

Now these plaza or driveway water are inspired by European plaza fountains of course but this does not mean that a fountain has to be old world in design. These days they are available in contemporary, modern and downright geometric styles as well along with the traditional, classic pieces that bring a bit of Europe to your garden landscape design. have you noticed the invasion of outdoor barbecues that are large enough to feed napolean's army camped outside moscow? personally  I abhore it. part of the challenge of outdoor summer spring fall and even winter cooking is the challenge to do creative things with only a flat fire source. Now i am not anti propane because i did my time builing charcoal fires 45 minutes before i wanted to cook and I have no romantic illusions about that. But i dont want a side  burner that lets me boil water nor do i need a cooking surface the size of my guest room bed. so today, when we finally agreed we had to replace the dying grill, we went looking for something small.

 

this was a greater adventure than i thought as the weber company- remember those funky round kettles we used in the 70's? - is the main proponent of the mega grills. I mean these monsters are so large that a 5-1 woman like me would singe her nipples off trying to reach over the heating surface to close the damn thing. we finally lucked out and found info on a last year model ducane - small with SIDE HANDLES- that couldn't take up the deck, disfigure my delicously reformed boobs ( 2002 reduction - more about that later if you must--- they are knock outs) and would still cook the basics i like to cook outside: fish meat chicken veggies occasionally some bread. okay it has a warming rack and a side tray but it's almost as minimal as you can get nowadays.

 

and yes we found one. standing alone  on a showroom floor with a hapless salesman who surprised me when he recalled his name because he couldn't figure out much anything else. and several key parts were missing. ( of him or the grill hmmm)  so he knocked $100 off the price.  we found the parts at another store that was more likely to stay in business and to make a short story long..... we are back into grilling.

 

Jim says I could singlehandedly bring back the 70's as I also bought a fondue set for ten dollars on ebay and i reminded him that the 70's have come and gone --- twice already. so tomorrow when we haul the thing up to the lower deck - off the kitchen- we can sear some dead animal carcas- just like the rest of america. cool beans.
