Out Of Gas @ MindSay

Gas Tax Holiday? No Thanks.
So, what I've read about the Gas Tax Holiday proposal by McCain and Clinton pretty much says that very little savings would be passed on to the consumer. And, in fact, may actually benefit the gas companies! What the Heck? Apparently, Clinton and McCain are not listening to the elitist economists, with their math and learning, who almost unanimously agree that both plans are pointless and costly.

Here are some quotes:

"The advocates of a "gas tax holiday" are exaggerating the benefits to consumers from their proposal. If the Illinois experience is a guide, there is likely to be some reduction in the price of gas, but it would fall well short of the size of the tax reduction. In order to pay for the tax cut, the government would have to cut back on highway construction and maintenance or find some other way of plugging the shortfall in revenues to the Highway Trust Fund."

"There's another catch to the McCain and Clinton proposals. Currently, the gas tax is deposited directly into the Highway Trust Fund, which is used to pay for upgrades to roads and bridges. The American Society of Civil Engineers estimates that the three-month gas tax holiday could cost as much as $8.5 billion.

McCain has responded by pledging to fund the Highway Trust Fund out of general revenues. That, of course, means adding another $8.5 billion in federal debt, which in turn means adding as much as $383 million per year in interest payments."

"Clinton campaign spokesperson Geoff Garin said in a conference call this week that the proposal would save each driver $70. The Clinton campaign did not respond to our request to clarify how it arrived at that figure. But the non-partisan American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials estimates that the total savings for the average American motorist works out to about $28; for a two-car household, that would be $54.

That's IF prices actually dropped 18.4 cents per gallon. However, there's every indication that they wouldn't. Here's why: According to the basic principles of supply and demand, c
utting the price of an item causes people to buy more of it."

"For all the legislative prowess of McCain and Clinton, we’re doubtful that either candidate can rewrite the laws of supply and demand. That 18.4 cents per gallon won't go to consumers. Instead, the proposal will simply shift that money from government coffers to the oil companies. We're willing to grant that if the laws of economics themselves took a holiday and the price did drop that much, the amount saved might be meaningful to many motorists, particularly those who are low-income and those who drive a lot. And there would likely be all kinds of ancillary benefits involving price reductions for food and other products that have to be transported, as well as airline tickets and the like.

But we can't find any economists who think we'll actually see that drop in the price of gasoline. Others have tried and failed as well. And the Clinton campaign hasn't produced one, either."

"Another economist, Jeffrey Perloff, of UC-Berkeley, agreed that a federal tax moratorium would likely have less impact on consumer gas prices than a state moratorium. He said his models showed that a suspension of the 18.4-cent federal tax on gasoline would likely result in a temporary 9- to 12-cent reduction in the cost of a gallon of gas to the consumer, with the remainder of the reduction coming in wholesale prices."

"The Obama campaign says that's a key reason why he opposes McCain's plan: there is no mechanism to make sure that consumers, rather than oil companies, reap the benefits of the tax holiday.

So on this point — how Obama voted in 2000 — the RNC glosses over an important detail. Yes, he voted for the tax holiday the first time, but he opposed an extension of it because he said consumers weren't getting the benefit."

Monday's post that never was "Life running on empty"
Same day different post. Well, I passed Amanda Brown. She parked her truck sideways and another car parked beside it. Now she can't back up without hitting the car. Also the car can't back up without hitting her truck. She asked me what I should do. I told her to leave it and let the other guy deal with it. So she did. I then told her about what happened yesterday.

Ok, Kaye only put in $5 of gas in it. She then drove her friend Deseray home. Then we drove home. That ate up the $5. I was heading to Taco Bell for work when my car just stopped in the middle of nowhere (luckly on a highway). It ran out of gas. So I put on my hazard and stood outside my car to see if I would get help. 3 people passed by (minutes from each other) and would laugh and give me the finger for no reason. They were in fast cars too. Jerks... Anywayz, I made a sign that said HELP on it and held it. People would read the sign but wouldn't look at my face. As if they looked that it would make them feel bad. So I made another sign that said RAN OUT OF GAS. I held both up at people but everyone just passed by. Then these two old fishermen drove by and picked me up in their old Buick Century. They drove me to Taco Bell, told me about their horrible fishing luck and dropped me off, free of charge while saying "Just doin a good deed in the eyes of the Lord". I told them "I hope God blesses you with a school of fish for this" Then while I was at work from 11 A.M. to Midnight Kaye went and brought my car to me with $12 of gas (that I gave her). So yep, thats what happened.

I'm using a Macintosh computer. I really like it too. Its a little confusing though. It is my first time using it. I just have to figure out how to open the programs menu, if there is one.

I talked to some chick and I have to get the full payment by Oct. 15th for college.

Ahh, the macintosh won't let me click the buttons. I click them but nothing happens. I'm using a program called Safari.

Running On Empty

Have you ever looked around at all the stuff going on in your life and wondered where God is?  You seem to be getting pummeled on every side without any time to rest and recover, never mind prepare yourself for the next blow.  Well, thats where God has had me for a while.

On Friday evening, before I left to bring my kids to their dads for the weekend I failed to notice my child go through my purse to find his Gameboy that he had put in it earlier.  Considering it is a two hour drive and we were running late, I decided to wait after I dropped the kids off to get gas instead of on the way.  After I got back on the highway I started watching for exists with gas stations.  I had to drive about 20 more miles before I saw a Speedway sign.  I grabbed my purse to get the $20.00 I had put in my wallet for gas earlier.  Much to my horror however, my wallet was gone.  I franticly searched the car, but couldnt find it anywhere.  So there I was about 110 miles from home with only a quarter of a tank to get me there.  Considering I have a 12 gallon tank, things arent looking so good.

So I get back in my car, and think about the lecture I had been listening to about chapter 11 in the Book of Hebrews.  Basically to summarize the chapter, it is about living by faith, not by sight, and fixing your eyes on Jesus regardless of what is going on around you.

"What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen.  It is the evidence of things we cannot yet see." (Hebrews 11:1)

So I said, OK Jesus, You obviously want to make sure I understand this chapter on a personal level because I am about to live it.  So I began praying, called on His promises, and started out on what seemed like the impossible.

As I passed through Lansing, about 65 miles from home, I was down to 1/8th of a tank of gas.  At this point there was nothing I could do to conserve enough gas to make it home, so I again called out to God and His promises to provide for His children.  The fact that the lecture on the next chapter in the Book of Hebrews had just began caused me to squirm a little (you will have to look it up if you want to know why), but I quickly turned it off.  For right now I wanted, no needed to have faith.

I cant tell you how relieved, and grateful I was about an hour later when I pulled into my parking space and the fuel light hadnt even gone on yet.  I was also relieved to walk into my house and find my wallet sitting on the floor beside the outlet where the charger is plugged in for my kids Gameboy.

Exhausted emotionally and physically, I went to bed and thought about the night. I had driven far beyond what I should have been able to with so little fuel, but God had somehow stretched what was there and got me home.  I trusted Him through faith and He kept His promises.  No doubt He was with me tonight.

But there was more to it, well for me anyway.  These days it seems my day never ends.  I could never figure out which was worse emotional or physical exhaustion, but now I know, its actually the combination of them both. I was beginning to see my experience tonight as a picture of what I am experiencing in life. Many days I find myself pleading with God for a break because my life gas tank is on empty, there is no station in sight, and even if there was I dont have my wallet to pay for it.  But no matter how many miles God still has laid out on the road before me at the end of each day, even though I feel I am at the end of my fuel supply, He will always make sure I have enough to make it. Basically I see it as a personal reminder to me to stop worrying and have faith in His promises.

"So dont worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring its own worries.  Todays trouble is enough for today." (Matthew 6:34)
