What the Gay Brain Looks Like

This article raises some questions and issues with me.

First off, I have in my archives about the 'fact' that we all start off as female, and that it would 'seem' that men are female but have been modified for reproductive purposes to be male by 'nature' or 'Source' . Instead of the notion that women are 'men' with wombs, that just maybe  that men are women without wombs. And in my mind tends to lean to the notion that our Source might me Fe/male. This research shows me that just possible that Gays especially men have  just not had as much of what ever it is that happens during the change from female to males in the wombs and they are closer to their beginnings and just may that this is a normal process for this group of people, that instead of being thought of as abnormal. Just maybe there are normally many groups of people with many kinds of sexual orientation?

Second, if this is true, and I have read other such research that came to the same possible conclusion that just maybe gay and lesbian people are born that way and that it is not a choice but a  normal sexual orientation.

Third if this is so, then to have religions call it a 'sin' just might be wrong?

Just something to think about.

blessed be

What the Gay Brain Looks Like

Michael Prince / Corbis

What makes people gay? Biologists may never get a complete answer to that question, but researchers in Sweden have found one more sign that the answer lies in the structure of the brain....

Scientists at the Karolinska Institute studied brain scans of 90 gay and straight men and women, and found that the size of the two symmetrical halves of the brains of gay men more closely resembled those of straight women than they did straight men. In heterosexual women, the two halves of the brain are more or less the same size. In heterosexual men, the right hemisphere is slightly larger. Scans of the brains of gay men in the study, however, showed that their hemispheres were relatively symmetrical, like those of straight women, while the brains of homosexual women were asymmetrical like those of straight men. The number of nerves connecting the two sides of the brains of gay men were also more like the number in heterosexual women than in straight men.

Just what these brain differences mean is still not clear. Ever since 1991, when Simon LeVay first documented differences in the hypothalamus of gay and straight men, researchers have been struggling to understand what causes these differences to occur. Until now, the brain regions that scientists have come to believe play a role in sexual orientation have been related to either reproduction or sexuality. The Swedish study, however, is the first to find differences in parts of the brain not normally involved in reproduction — the denser network of nerve connections, for example, was found in the amygdala, known as the emotional center of the brain. "The big question has always been, if the brains of gay men are different, or feminized, as earlier research suggests," says Dr. Eric Vilain, professor of human genetics at University of California Los Angeles, "then is it just limited to sexual preference or are there other regions that are gender atypical in gay males? For the first time, in this study it looks like there are regions of the brain not directly involved in sexuality that seem to be feminized in gay males."

Vilain, who studies the genetic factors behind sexuality and sexual orientation, notes that it may turn out that the brains of gay men possess only some 'feminized' structures, while retaining some masculine ones, and this is reflected in how they act on their sexuality. "We know from studies that men, regardless of their sexual orientation, retain masculine characteristics when it comes to their sexual behavior," he says. Both gay and straight men, for example, tend to prefer younger partners, in contrast to women, who gravitate toward older partners. Most men are also more likely than women to engage in casual sex, and to be aroused by visual stimuli. "So I expect that some regions of the brain will remain masculine even in gay men," says Vilain. For something as complex as sexual orientation, it's no surprise that everything from genes to gender to environment may play a role in ultimately determining your perfect partner.

Shanghai----Went to Shanghai for a week of orientation.  By far the largest city I have ever seen 22+ million people and a skyscraper on every corner.  Made NYC look like Buxton, or maybe Hollis.  Had both the very modern and the very old.  In one of the ancient Chinese-style gardens you were in the shadow of huge skyscrapers...."High Beauties" as Freddie, one of our university tour guides called them.  "Do you like the high beauties of Shanghai?" he would ask.

The old part of the city that we travelled to was just as I had imagined this country to be like...crowded, narrow streets with shops and vendors everywhere.  One of the very first phrases that we were taught in our survival chinese course was "Bu yao" --I don't want it --or something to that effect.  It worked and some of the vendors would recoil in surprise to hear a westerner using it as they flaunted goods in your face.  Everywhere we went we were offered all manner of things...even looking into some of the small shops on the street would elicit a sales pitch and someone following you.  Who could have guessed that Rolex watches were so common in China --- poor vendors seemed to have dozens of them.

In addition to "bu yao" we were also taught how to haggle on the prices....this was my personal favorite.  I enjoyed the drama of appearing disgusted at the price and his/her refusal to budge on it and walking away (sometimes several times in one transaction) in mock disgust.  You could usually cut the price from 50 -75% of what they initally offered.

Did some other sightseeing, 2nd tallest building in the world -- went up some 88 stories in 45 seconds -- Shanghai museum (was one of the few places I remembered the camera), night boat cruise of the river, Yuyuan Garden (ancient Chinese style garden) and the old German concession known as The Bund.  This was basically a riverfront street and was made up of German style buildings...lots of bars and again, lots of vendors.

Will travel back to Shanghai, whenever I get the need to feel western again.

First Day on the Job!!!

Hello to all!!

OMG do i have tons to talk about today about my first day of my 40 year career!!  LOL  my first day couldn't have gone any better!  this is how it went down...i was able to get in at 820am for my 830am orientation for new hires...i was one of five new hires starting today...their names are christine, v.j., rajah, and johan...christine is only here in mahwah for 6 weeks but she is from san diego so after her 6 weeks are done, she will be working full time in san diego working as a clinical analysis so thats soo cool for her...she is able to go thru training here in NJ before she starts in CA...great stuff...V.J. i believe is working for finance and seems to be a great dude.  he was coming off of another job...Rajah was one that stood out for me but not because he was special or anything but he was a tad unprepared!!  before the orientation, we had some paperwork to fill out and he didnt do that!  so he was scrambling to fill out the forms during the orientation so i felt bad for the guy.  he is also married and was coming from another company...if you, the reader, get a chance to be in an orientation, make sure you are prepared!!  it doesn't make you look good, at least for me...Johan started to work the packaging division at stryker and he was one of two that did previous co-op terms (the other being me..hehe) so it was cool and he is another nice dude....

so after some basic intros we got our orientation started...our HR rep was Paige and she was very informative...she helped answer a lot of potential questions for us...we went over a lot of topics which includes the layout of the stryker building in mahwah (which is super huge), HR contact list, Code of conduct stuff, employeee healthcare, important facts about our benefits package, summary of the company's welfare benefits plan, review of the history of stryker, its mission and core values, employee income protection, short term and long term disability insurance, employee investment and savings plans, 401 (K) retiring plan, other benefit programs includes employee stock, educational assistance plan and so forth, and other miscellaneous topics which included referral forms, emergency info, holiday schedule, delta dental, united health care info, eye med info, and the list goes on and on...

i saw a whole bunch of videos that all new hires have to view...signed a couple of things for HR...received a nice informative binders, stryker handbook, stryker coffee mug, nice pen, free lunch ticket for today and a couple of other stuff...after some videos we were given a nice tour of the place...i have been to the mahwah campus in 4 of my 5 co-op terms so i am pretty familiar with the place but i can't say no to a nice tour!!  during the tour, i was able to see my dad and he had a huge grin on his face as well as other former co-workers...i caught a lot of them by suprise with my showing at stryker and with a gray badge (as suppose to an orange one for Co-ops) and some co-workers had an expression as if they had just seen a ghost!!  lol  it was funny!!  i was a tad shy seeing everyone again but it was nice after saying hello to them all and doing some catching up on...the one team i wasn't too fond of saying hi was the concept development team idea testing side...actually i didnt see the concept dev team that interviewed me before i interviewed with the custom implants team (the team i am working for now) and it was good but i will be running into them sometime since my desk is right across from theirs but its okay...i will work very hard and show them that they made the mistake by not giving me an offer...whatever, i will let my work do the talking for me....also, another team that i didnt bode well today (or at least i thought based on the vibe i got from them) was my last co-op team that i interned for and that was the concept development idea thinking side...i had some problems with a particular hard headed co-worker so it was no suprise that i didnt get a congrats from him but its okay...im grateful i am not working for him, with him, or with the team anyway so i dont care...its pointless, just because you have, what, 40 years of experience doesnt mean that i dont know what i am doing...just hear me out just like i hear you out and lets learn from each other....instead this person just went by his method (which was a lot harder and longer than my method, mind you) and when one tries to modify the dimensions, it was impossible to figure out how he did it cuz his method is soo unorthodox....again, whatever...i am over that crap and again, i am happy for working at custom implants instead of the concept dev...

anyway, orientation went very well....had a great lunch (since it was free)

i have to continue this in a few...dinner is calling me here at home!! so BRB!!

Why?

Why am I sitting here thinking about the camp orientation a few summers ago when Scott and I were sitting together drawing the bug/aliens they asked us to, and being absolutely blown away by absolutely how talented he is?  Why am I thinking about him so much, when I am positive he isn't thinking about me.  But I will never forget our summer together as Navigator counselors, and how it was ALMOST a trio against everyone... how he knew I wasn't fake because he knew me.

I can't deny it.  I wish I could because it hurts and I try to make the best of it, but I miss camp.  CAMP camp, not the substitution.  MY camp.

work yay!!

If you dont know me by now i LOVE to work no matter what job I have. I could be picking up cow poop as my job and still love my job. But any way I went to orientation at target today. From 10am to 205pm. What a LONNNG orientation. but i think its about average for orientation. It was about that long when I got hired at carvel and when I got hired at the dance studio. Just because they have to go through the tax forms and show you where everythings is. And at target they had an informational video. Like wooooaaaah. youd have to be an idiot if you didnt know the stuff in the video already. I really felt stupid after watching it. They were like when you climb up a ladder and reach for items off of the top shelf, do NOT throw the items you retrieve. Simply pass it on to a person below. and yes they had extra umph on the not.... So then after like forever we got to go see the room where if you are caught stealing you go get booked and hand cuffed to the seat. and we saw where we got pay checks and we saw the whole room where they had the stuff they stocked the shelves with. and guess what you have to be certified to use everything it seems. You have to be certified to use a ladder. Its a safety thing. There was me and four other people at the orientation. A guy named billy a girl named duffy and two other girls i dont know their names. but one of the girls i dont know their name shes first year going on second year college like me and the other girl is deaf and i think slightly mentally challanged and she had two interpraters (SP?) and she was superly nice. we also saw where to clock in and hwere the lockers are and the employee lounge. and Employees get 10 percent off at the starbucks in there and all the stuff in the store cept th e food part in the store cuz thats part of the super target we only get 10 percent off of the regular target stuff. so i guess some of the dry food we get a discount on too cuz that stuff is in regular targt too. and we get 10percent off of the snack bar. and its cheap already like 2.39 including the tax for a hot dog and a drink not that bad... so I work tomorrow from 9-330 its training the rest of this week and next week well they said they train up to as long as we need it so it depends. but they have me scheduled for training up until next saturday but we will see. i work like every other day it seems. but owell its 7.75 an hour paychecks every two weeks

and i got paid for orientation today :)

so comment me please :)
