I've been experiencing a terrible period of apathy that bled into a manic depressive episode this weekend. Instead of writing about "poor little me" I decided to try to pick myself up and go to the library for inspiration. My depression and apathy stemmed from a lack of passion and motivation to finish any art work. I had such downward spiralling dreams of failure and rejection that I fell into a deep sleep on Thursday afternoon and didn't wake up until Friday evening. I still have a lot to finish on the comic book project. My heart is just not in it and I don't know why. It wasn't until I visited the library last night that I managed to get most of myself out of this funk. I discovered a very interesting book on Occult Photography called "The Perfect Medium" and it's just full of odd photos with strange bits of ectoplasm inching out of people's bodies. Most of the photos come from the early 20th century, with some coming from as late as the 1960's which made me feel a sort of near past life nostalgia for that old school Occult. I'm anything but a light, fluffy kind of Witch and the books I first read on the Occult were ones written at least twenty to thirty years before I was born. There was something beautiful and forbidden about information on the spirit world that was printed and photographed during those times -- not something evil, but something aestheticly devilish noir, like priests in hooded black cloaks haunting the basements of unsuspecting upright citizens. Nowadays there is such a total influx of information, with so many ceremonial magicians and mediums sharing their experiences and opinions, that the Occult forces out there now seem tame and accomidating to entertain the masses.
Not that I'm complaining too much. It's much easier to practice Witchcraft than it was, say, twenty years ago when it was still caught under the fog of Satanic hysteria. I suppose the public has perhaps now discovered that true evil in this world does not come in the convenient guise of a devil complete with forked tail and horns, nor does his minions appear out of the shadows looking like Alestair Crowley clones or Heavy Metal hair band rockers with spiked metal and black leather arm bands. There's something a little disappointing in that it's no longer all that cool to rebel against society dressed like that anymore. Even Goth kids can walk down the street all draped in black and no one really batts an eyelash. That look has become homogenized in the way that most styles and movements do, but part of me still looks back with fondness.
So I started to think about what I find sinisterly cool about the Occult and I want to write about it. In my world that underworld exists in ways I think a contemporary LaVey Satanist would love. In my world the forces of darkness are really the good guys. The real bad guys are the ones you'd never suspect to be evil. The real bad guys are goblins in the guise of nice looking white guys who sacrifice children to their lust. See, there really isn't groups of Satanists out there murdering babies on altars dedicated to unholy Gods. In the reality I see, your best friend would be the seemingly eccentric Occultist or unexpectedly "normal" Satanist who sets them self apart from society, alive and wide awake in the shadows ready to strike down the oridinary evil all around us...
