| We all know that olive oil is wonderful and healthy for us to cook with, but what about its other uses? Truthfully, olive oil is another main ingredient in several beauty products you can buy on the shelf. See for yourself how you can make your own skin cocktails and save a little money at the same time.
1. A mixture of 1/2 cup olive oil, 1/4 cup vinegar, & 1/4 cup water used as a night cream will make your skin glow. The olive oil softens and moisturizes and the vinegar lightens discolorations, kills bacteria and loosens dead skin cells. Splash water on your face before applying.
2. Olive oil can be used as cleansing cream if your skin is dry.
3. For a facial, wet face thoroughly, then massage olive oil into your skin. Use about a half teaspoon of sugar and scrub your face with that, then wipe off gently with a warm, wet cloth until the sugar is all gone.
4. Use olive oil on your feet with clean white cotton socks. Helps to soften up you feet and it absorbs better than baby oil.
5. It seems when you pour olive oil out there is always a drip, so wipe it up with your hand and rub it in to your elbows. Wonderful softening properties.
6. Use olive oil as bath oil. Two to three tablespoons will do the trick.
7. Use olive oil for your hair. Not only does it condition, but it also gets rid of the frizz. Put a small drop into your palm & then rub both hands together & apply it to dry hair.

The Secret to Perfect Summer Legs
Safflower OilIf you don't know a penta-peptide from an antioxidant and frankly don't care -- you just want your gator-dry legs to be soft and silky-smooth -- look no farther than your kitchen. The answer lies in that bottle of safflower oil sitting on the shelf. This polyunsaturated oil, beloved by cardiologists for being good for your heart, is just as good for your skin, but from the outside in.
The oil, which is pressed from the seeds of spiky yellow safflowers, is a super moisturizer. "That's because it's very high in linoleic acid, a fatty acid that skin normally makes to keep its moisture level up and barrier function intact," says New York City dermatologist Amy Wechsler, MD, RealAge's skin expert. Since our body's linoleic acid production gets sluggish as we age, it helps to replace it from the outside.
"In theory, you could use olive oil too, which is also high in linoleic acid, but you'd smell like a salad!" Wechsler says. Along with being odorless, safflower oil has the advantages of being colorless and cheap. And that's not all. Safe enough for sensitive skin, it's so gentle that it's massaged into newborn babies' skin at some hospitals.
Although this natural oil is one of Wechsler's favorite treatments for dry lower legs, where flakiness can be especially persistent, you can use it body-wide -- though not when you're in a mad rush, as it takes time to soak in. "Smooth it on immediately after a bath or shower to seal in the moisture your skin has just absorbed. You can even apply it on your face, as long you don't get it into your eyes; stop a bit below the lower lid."
If you're not sure about moisturizing with pure cooking oil (and the beauty industry sincerely hopes you aren't), you can find safflower oil in moisturizers, lip balms, and scrubs. "Look for a product that lists it among the first three ingredients, which means it contains a high concentration of the oil," says Dr. Wechsler.
Otherwise, just pour some safflower oil into a pretty little squeeze bottle and add it to your toiletries. No one will ever guess you cook with it too. And your legs will look amazing.
Avocado, Banana and Orange Oil

- 1 Avocado - contains Vitamins A, C, and E, iron, potassium, niacin, pantothenic acids; unsaturated fatty acids stimulate the skins production of natural oil
- 2 Small bananas - contain tryptophan, an amino acid, potassium, and Vitamins A, B, C and E which restore the elasticity of the hair
- 1 small bottle Olive oil - Hippocrates called olive oil the great therapeutic; provides sunscreen protection, absorbing 20% of the suns rays
- Orange essential oil - soothes and restores the spirit; is a skin conditioner and soothing agent
- 1 brick of beeswax - melting point is 145 F; natural animal wax from the comb of the honey bee; works as a binder and protective barrier from wind and sun
Face
Tropical Citrus Mask
If you want to avoid lots of clean up, before applying this mask cover your face with cheesecloth (with holes cut out for eyes and mouth).
- Mix together: 1 ripe banana, 1 tsp. Olive oil, 1 drop Orange essential oil.
- Smooth over face and leave on for 15 - 20 minutes.
- Rinse off with tepid water. Smooth on a rich moisturizer.
Hair
Mayan Hair Mask
Ancient Mayan Inca and Aztec women believed that avocados fed the skin from the inside and outside. Make sure you save the avocado pit, setting it in a place where it can dry out.
- Mix together: ripe avocado, 1 tbsp. olive oil, small banana and 1 egg yolk.
- Gently massage onto hair and scalp and cover with a shower cap.
- Leave on 1 hour and rinse thoroughly with warm water. Shampoo as usual.
Lips
Honey Orange Lip Balm
If you like your lip balm to have a thinner, glossier consistency, use more olive oil. If you like a thicker, creamier feel, use less.
- Heat 2 tbsp. Chopped beeswax in a double boiler until melted. Remove from heat. Slowly pour cup olive oil into beeswax and stir to mix.
- Add 1 tbsp. honey and 5 drops Orange essential oil. Stir continuously to mix until cool.
- Pour into a clean container with a lid. Tightly seal.
Body
Avocado & Banana Scrub
The pit of the avocado needs to be dried for 3 - 5 days before it can be ground for this recipe.
- Grind dried avocado pit until pieces are very fine (placing it in a sealed plastic bag and hammering it will work). Mix with banana and olive oil to make a thick paste.
- Rub gently over skin - do not use too much pressure, as the pit will naturally exfoliate!
- Rinse off in a warm shower.
