Indigenous People's Day
powwow1.jpg hosted for free by ImageShack

I totally forgot that today is Indigenous Persons Day...not in honor of Christopher Columbus, and not a celebration, but instead, an honoring of the people who were here prior to the...hmmm...not sure what word to use...settling by the whites????

Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated in order to recognize those who lived on this land before the arrival of Columbus and the ”discovery” of America. Indigenous Peoples Day is celebrated on the same day as the traditional Columbus Day. Having Indigenous Peoples Day celebrated on the same day as Columbus Day is no coincidence. Native American activist in the early 1990s thought it was appropriate to also celebrate that Indigenous people are still alive and their cultures are not gone. Some Native American activist groups view the ”discovery” of America by Columbus as the “Columbus' Invasion”.

One of the founders of Indigenous Peoples Day was Mildred E. "Millie" Ketcheshawno (1937-2000), a member of the Muskogee Creek Nation. She became very active in Native rights issues locally and nationally, participating in the Indians of All Tribes occupation of Alcatraz Island 1969-1971, which touched off the modern revival of Native American activism. In 1991 she became one of the founders of "Resistance 500." This group helped to stop the Quincentennial Jubilee plan to sail replicas of Columbus' armada into San Francisco Bay. In 1992 the Berkeley Resistance 500 Task Force, endorsed by the Berkeley City Council, brought about the end of the Columbus Day celebration in Berkeley, replacing it with Indigenous Peoples Day.

Johnny Depp to Star as John Dillinger
Cool story from valentinaxxx:

Little known fact: John Dillinger was friends with my family.  While my father was growing up in the late 20's/early 30's,  Dillinger often chose to "hide out" on the Menominee reservation.  He respected the American Indian better than he did the U.S. government.  One of the safe houses he stayed at was the Kaquatosh's place.  In our prayers to the ancestors, we still count Dillinger as one of the family and we burn tabacco in his honor.

My father has often told me tall tales about the gangster who lived for a short while on the res, and I have even dreamed about him over the years, it's like he's more than just some gangster out of 1930's history, he's sort of a family legend, a "dirty angel" looking down on us.

Now, guess what? Johnny Depp is going to star as Dillinger in the upcoming movie, "Public Enemies" which will be filmed close to where real life Dillinger hung out with my family here in north central Wisconsin.  Co-starring Christian Bale as Melvin Purvis and Channing Tatum as Pretty Boy Floyd, plus many other young hunks, the picture promises to be positively star filled.

I've always thought that it was about time Hollywood turned it eye on where I live as a good location for an old fashioned gangster flick based on Dillinger's life.  There have been other films about Dillinger, but not with Johnny Depp starring in them!

Native American Tribe Secedes from the United States
The Lakota Indians have declared sovereignty from the United States, reports quddus .  The tribe, whose land includes parts of Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana and Wyoming told the State Department:

“We are no longer citizens of the United States of America and all those who live in the five-state area that encompasses our country are free to join us.”

It's unclear how the US Government will respond to the move, if at all.  Should the Native Americans be able to secede completely from the US, or should there be boundaries?

November is American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month

Several users reminded us that November is American Indian & Alaska Native Heritage Month.  For some good information, check out some historical landmarks at the National Parks Service web site, or learn more about the celebration at IHS.gov.
