Muppet Show @ MindSay

A tribute to a friend...

This one goes out to a friend of mine who is in Boston right now with a companion who isn't feeling so hot.

And, again, this is a song which was performed on the very first Muppet Show episode -- a fact I learned from the Season One Boxed set.

Although, it must be told, this song was performed by Rowlf only in the UK version of the first episode -- it was cut from the US version due to advertising time restraints.

Rowlf proclaims this to be the worst song ever -- his mother turns down her hearing aides when he plays it.

You and I and George

You... and I and George
Went strolling through the park one day...

And then, you held my hand
As if to say:
"I love you."

And then,
We passed a brook --
And George fell in and drowned himself
And floated
Out to sea

Leaving you alo-ooone
With me!

Wow - another deep song from the Muppet Show. Who knew?

That '70s Show...

As you may have read in arrrgylesocKs's latest entry, we recently purchased "The Muppet Show" Season One DVD boxed set. We've been enjoying it immensely. Even av enjoyed the first episode which featured dancer extrodinaire Juliet Prowse. He especially enjoyed the "Mahna Mahna" bit -- but hey, who doesn't?

It's interesting to see how much of the show captures the essence of 1976 -- but how much of it really was decades ahead of its time. One example is a song which appeared on the first episode and on the Muppet Show record album (and 25th anniversary CD). It's sung by Scooter and Fozzie Bear, but was originally performed by Randy Newman on his 1972 album "Sail Away." It's great on so many levels...

Simon Smith And The Amazing Dancing Bear

I may go out tomorrow if I can borrow a coat to wear
Oh, I'd step out in style with my sincere smile and my dancing bear
Outrageous, alarming, courageous, charming
Oh, who would think a boy and bear
Could be well accepted everywhere
It's just amazing how fair people can be.

Seen at the nicest places where well-fed faces all stop to stare
Making the grandest entrance is Simon Smith and his dancing bear
They'll love us, won't they?
They feed us, don't they?
Oh, who would think a boy and bear
Could be well accepted everywhere
It's just amazing how fair people can be.

Who needs money when you're funny?
The big attraction everywhere
Will be Simon Smith and his dancing bear
It's Simon Smith and the amazing dancing bear.

It ain't "Short People," but it's deep nonetheless...
