I was blessed to make a trip to Kentucky to see the graduation of my middle child with her Bachelor's of Education, and was also there to visit with my children and my own mother (and dad) on Mother's day.  I did take a few photos but I must warn you that I am an amateur, these basically being my first, and I did not do a very good job at all keeping my camera still.

But you can get the gist of what my little band looks like after all this time. I think it is the first time I am posting photos of my children.

I rode on three planes for the first time, and finally got over my fear of flying, since I just had to!  The third plane was a little Cessna seven seater, and I geared up to panic, but found that it was most pleasant!  The rain was pounding on us on the way there, but it was truly not scary and on the way home, it was clear and I got to see what was going on under us the whole time!

This is my middle child, Liza Anne, who graduated, and is being interviewed for jobs for the fall.  Please say a prayer that she will be suitably accommodated with the job she wishes for.

Next is a picture of her with her future husband, my son and his fiance, my eldest daughter and her family (see my little granddaughter) and then some of us on Mother's day in the new outfit my son bought me.

I had a wonderful time, but was equally happy to be back to my little apartment in the beautiful little city of Brigham City, Utah; I am definitely happy here.

What I did for Mom's Day

I fed my mother dinner at the nursing home.  It's weird to be the one to feed her now.  It is karma.  She used to do the same for me when I was little. We watched "Water Horse: Legend of the Deep" and were amused by the lil' Loch Ness Monster's antics.  The movie was great and renewed my interest in mythic beasts again (I was obsessed with the Loch Ness Monster when I was 9/10 years old).  Tomorrow is a brother and sister day; me and Mark are going shopping in Appleton or, as I like to call it "hunting for treasure!"  We each are going to find our Mom something weird or unique (hence the "treasure" part).  Of course we're also hunting for gifts for each other.

It's good to get in touch with family every now and then.  Never know how long we have with each other.

I'm trying to convince my brother to watch Flight of the Conchords tonight.  Nothing like great novelty folk music to keep the spirits happy.  The Lord of the Rings and David Bowie parodies are to die for!  *sigh* I love Bret and Jemaine.  They rock my world.  I'm also convinced they'll rock yours, too.

Yep, mothers out there, happy day!  Treat yourselves to the movie and tv series I talked about above.  Nothing like a great fantasy to keep your reality in check, once the little ones are asleep, that is...

Mother's day news
Yesterday Av and I went to the bookstore and ended up getting him a new book:

It's got simple words, just a few per page.  Av is way into phonics, so I thought (since he is a Cars fanatic) that this might be something he can learn to read himself.  And you know what?  This morning he sat down with me and read me the book.

It wasn't him "reading" - like when a kid has heard a book so many times he's memorized it - he read it.  He patiently sounded out each word to figure out what it was.  Some words he recognized already like "car" and "red" - but the other words like "highway" "mean" "tire" "night" and "dull" he figured out all on his own.  I was so f-ing proud of him.

Shiny was downstairs (unfortunately he had to work today) so after I called my folks to share the good news, we went down to tell him.  It was bittersweet.  On the one hand, HE READ HIS FIRST BOOK!  He excitedly told Shiny that he read the word "highway" and that "gh" was a "silent blend".  On the other hand, Shiny, like myself, wanted to immediately tell his mom.  And we can't.

My mother-in-law was an amazing woman.  She was an educator and teacher, and I know how super proud she would be for Av - he's reading before kindergarten.  I can see the huge smile that would be on her face when we told her.  She'd make him feel so proud of this great accomplishment.  And it crushed Shiny that he couldn't share this news with her.

So today had it's ups and downs.  But the memory of her giant smile has been with me all day, and I hope to never forget that.

Mother's Day / Sunday Ramble
Spent most of my day outside yesterday weeding.

Weeding for me is very therapeutic.   The tendency to get lost in thought and take in the sounds and smells of the day help to distract from unwanted feelings.

Will need to finish what I started yesterday today ..... my fingers aching from arthritis ..... put an end to a project almost completed.  Then one more large, the largest of course, saved the best for last ..... flower bed to weed out and I can then plant whenever.  Had decided not to plant flowers this year .... mainly because Dave and I will be in at the claim more than home this summer .... but then thought about it and mom really enjoys her yard in the summer .... and the flowers brighten it up.  So flowers will get planted and on the days we come home from the claim I will do quickie weedings.  That way she can still show off her yard to her friends. Which she loves to do.

And for Mother's Day mom requested BBQ'd chicken ..... so today will be our first grilling of the season.  Fresh asparagus picked from our garden will go on the grill as well.  Maybe some grilled garlic bread, too.  Mom had brought home a flat of strawberries the other day and made two strawberry rhubarb pies for a bake sale and the left over berries are just needing some shortcake to make for a yummy dessert.  So my afternoon project .... shortcakes.  Not sure what all else we will have but something.  lol

Dave is off to help a friend haul some logs today ..... mom will be at church ..... so will have the house to myself for a little while anyway.

Petey woke me up with sweet eye kisses, Joe jumped up and snuggled for a few minutes and Miss Lola ..... is in Lola land ..... she was just wondering when breakfast was coming .... and doing her morning Lola dance.  Dave is feeling much better .... breathing much easier and I seem calmer so far today.  All in all not a bad start to a Sunday.

Hearing some noise from the kitchen ..... mom is up and moving.  Guess I better go give her a hug and wish her a good Mother's Day.  This wasn't the day I would of planned for her but it will do.  The sun is out ..... so far the wind is calm, it will be a good day for a BBQ.  To bad Dave won't be here during the day .... I'd have him make some of his famous, way to yummy potato salad.  And I don't attempt to even try and make it.  It just never compares.

So ..... to all the mom's in my network and beyond (who stumble upon this if you do) I wish you a very Happy Mother's Day.  Enjoy your families.

Peace.  J.
